.....very good in Boulder, not so much in Denver. OK, I just wanted to make this food related. More on the food later.

I cannot tell you how much your prayers and good thoughts have meant to us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Max has read posts to me and he and Ann have talked a number of times on the phone and shared updates back and forth. I think Ann probably knows more about what happened to me than I do. I remember Max coming in, holding my hand and saying Good Morning Darlin' and asking if I could open my eyes. Good Morning was the only sense of time I had during the 12 days I was on the ventilator in ICU. About ten days ago the cardiologist came in on rounds and said "you gave us a bit of a scare." The translation from Max was that twice they asked if he wanted to call a priest, and said he should call the family and be prepared to say Goodbye. But the skill of my medical team and the power of all your good thoughts pulled me through. I have named my two bovine valves Elsie and Elmer after the '50s contented cows from Borden's and pat them every morning and say we're going to have a great day. The bypass graft and the stents don't have names. They took me off the ventilator on Christmas day - the best present for all of us. I am so thankful to be alive. And I now know how really important it was for me to have such a good team of Dr's and glad I had the time beforehand to research and select carefully.

I'm exhausted, so this is all I'm going to type tonight. It takes a lot of effort to walk 60-70 feet with the walker.

Geez, I didn't realize it was a little crazy there in the OR! Glad you are doing better now and it won't be long before your walking and posting and cooking ect...

Hi ogoopogo and everyone, Dad is ok. The hospital didn't find anything seriously wrong with dad, thank goodness. They give him an oxygen machine due to being a little low sometimes. I think he wanted to go to the hospital because he knows the place so well. They told him he needed to do rehab and he said he wanted to do it there at the hospital, of course they told him they don't do it there and he had to go to a rehab place. When I went to see dad at the hospital he was sleeping and he looked so peaceful after all he's been through. I just let him sleep while I made a run over to his doctors office to ask questions. The night he was brought back to the nursing home he was so confused he didn't know where he was. I walked into the home the next evening to see how he was doing and he asked me if he was in a hotel. Well, you can just imagine what a shock it was for me to hear how confused dad was. I told him he was back at the skill nursing home. He asked if he was close to a town that is nearly 100 miles away from where we live cause on the way to the nursing home he thought they had taken the south exit instead of the north exit. He was scared to death, telling me he just knew he was going to be killed by the people there. He said they came with some pills not long after he'd gotten back and he thought they were giving him something bad. He said that he just gave up and thought if they were going to kill him he hoped it would be fast. He did say that later he looked around the room trying to put things together. He looked into the drawers and seen his thing's in there and noticed the bathroom looked familiar but just couldn't quite get it through his mind where he was. I went by today and he was much better and more himself as best as he could be that is. I know I'll be loosing him and I'm sure the first time he does not know who I am is going to be shocking, painful and hard to take. It was good to see he was better today. I is hard to hear dad talk like this and there's no way to really comfort him at least I don't know what to say. I did tell him I wouldn't have him in a place that would harm him but coming from the AL he doesn't feel safe. I don't know what all went on at the AL but it sure left him scared and hurt. He said they laughed at him when he'd tell them he was having chest pains. He also said that they fed them green beans and noodles everyday. I have seen them laugh at some of the thing's the residents did. Like one lady was sitting next to a window and she took the drape and draped it across her lap. They workers started playing with the lady asking her questions about the drape and the lady would make a commit and they'd laugh at her. Dad said they abused them by not letting them by not letting them have some food and sugar for tea or coffee. I'm wondering if I should report them of not? I feel should. I know dad is very concerned for the ones still living at the AL home. Barb

I had a long chat with Lee yesterday. She was feeling quite a bit better than she had a couple of days earlier. She had been feeling nauseous , but once they changed her meds she was much better. From what she said, I gather rehab is quite tiring but she is expecting to be home within a couple of weeks. I think as soon as she is feeling up to it she will post something here. Ann

Oh Lars, I'm just reading this thread. I knew of some family issues and your health issues. I had no idea that "stuff" was at this level. I'm so sorry that you and your family are going through this trying time. UTI's, in the elderly, can cause many difficulties in their health and well being. Sundowner's Syndrom comes to mind. Can make them feel like their days and nights are mixed up, dementia, painful without explanation and overall confusing thoughts. I thought I had Meningitis (again) 4 months ago...It ended up being a raging UTI! I kinda know what you are going through. Take care of you because if you don't no one will be there to do what needs to be done. Thinking of you today.

bri29... Are you sure you can't tack on an extra couple of vacation days on those work trips? That's what I used to do when I traveled for work (drove my boss nuts!). I don't know if it would work for your schedule, but, if you haven't already, I'd highly recommend staying overnight in Venice. The evening stroll along the canals, when the large tour groups are gone, is magical. Compumom... You're WAYYYY overdue for a visit. The apartment stays are not as difficult to arrange as you might think. Though some require a week stay, especially in the high season, there are many more apartment owners who will rent for 3 or 4 nights. It does take much more planning time to find the right place though. As for the agriturismos, many of these are run like a small hotel or B&B, so you can stay even one night if that's all you can allow for your schedule, but to really get the experience, again 3-4 nights to me is about minimum. What we do is pick a place based on location that allows us to do day-trips from that spot. It really saves on the wear and tear of packing and unpacking, and too much hotel/restaurant food. Eileen...there's always a 20th anniversary trip?! ;) Barnmom... I think it's a combination of tons of walking and numerous espressos. That might be the true key to the "mediterranean diet" Dlynn... That's one thing I like about Italy; there are plenty of options that are a great alternative to fast food, even if you're not a gourmet eater. Annie... Hand gestures, shrugs, smiles all go a long way toward communication. And people are mre than happy to communicate in whatever language works. Grazie, everyone for the kind words!

While it was great to be able to come here and get some updates from Ann, it's absolutely wonderful to finally have an update from you personally. No offense, Ann, but nothing beats hearing it straight from Lee! Glad you are finally able to post, even if it's a short one -- we know you are on the mend now.

Have Max or Charlotte send me an email when you feel like having a visitor (with good food!) and I'll come down and see you.

oh Lee! My friend! I am sooo happy to hear from you...What alot you have been through - you're such an angel...thank goodness you came through everything all right despite the setbacks you encountered...no doubt about it you are a fighter!

Leeeeeeeeeeee! My goodness it's so good to hear from you. Yes you did give us a scare, but that's over and behind you now. You'll improve day by day, step by step. Soon you'll be back in L.A. on a shopping trip and we'll have a get-together.

Ellen Coumadin for life ain't bad - it's a tried-and-true drug that helps keep many people alive - me for one. Lee, I'll tell you all the tips about that if you need it.

Plavix is my drug the doc said. It keeps me alive too. Although the doc said I could get off if I behaved and walked more...my problems are more arterial than veinial.

Lee, I'm thinking of you all the time. Get well so you can come back. We miss you!

Lee, it is good to see a post from you. Yes, walking and getting your strenght back with be hard but with elmer and Elsie you can do it. What a gift to be "back". PT is a P in the A, but it sure beats calling the preist.

Each day will be a bit better and easier, with going home in good health your goal. We are all here rooting for you and holding your hand.

Lee, you missed a really good picture on this forum while you've been recuperating. It's already been removed, but don't worry -- some thoughtful friends managed to save it for you. You'll have to wait a little while, though because I don't think your heart is ready for this picture yet. It's of one of our CFers in a Speedo!!! You're gonna love it. Maybe they could even send you a poster sized copy of it for your hospital room??!!

Lee I'm so glad you are on your way to full good health. You sure had everyone scared for you here. You have so many friends here and it was really heart warming to see how they all rallied round while you were down. Now they will rally to your side as you get better. Good and slow, that's the way to go. Best of health to you.

A CFer in a Speedo?? Wow, I'd like to see that pic. My heart can take it... [makes sure I took my blood pressue pill.... yup.. good to go..] Smiles. That's such a nice a incentive for Lee, DLynn..

Lee! I'm so glad to see your post. My glasses fogged up when I read it the first time, and when I read it to my DH, I couldn't finish because I choked up. I keep reminding him that you're the one that sent us the smoked paprika and the saffron soon after I started coming to this forum, simply because I asked about saffron. We so enjoyed the spices, even more so your kindness. I'm so glad you're on the mend.

Scroll down a few posts to the "Lake Guy/David -- Throwing down a Challenge" post to see a Speedo picture. It's the current day version. The "retro" Speedo picture was much better and showed lots more of that awesome physique!!! Oh, and the hairdo in the retro picture was quite cool too. The picture was removed from the post, but not before some adoring "fans" saved it for future use. One look at that picture will definitely give Elmer and Elsie a workout.

Yesterday was the pits. I woke up aching all over with a sore and scratchy throat and aches all over. Mercifully, I slept most of the day and feel like a new person today. Maybe there really is a 24 hour flu.

Cathy, I will be ready to party with you and Raymond this summer and am looking forward to it.

Dlynn, I would love see you and share good food.

Brenda, it's funny how certain random, or maybe not, images go through ones mind. I'm not sure if this was going in to surgery the first time or coming out, but I clearly saw the hurricane lamp from you with a brightly lit candle.

Teresa and everyone else, we do shed tears for each other and laugh and hug through cyberspace, and sometimes are lucky enough to meet in person. Thank you also for teaching me, the non baker that I can make bread with four ingredients, a bowl and wooden spoon.

I do feel the love and support from all of you and am thankful you have extended your good thought to my Dr.s. I just heard an interview with a group of young adults on the Washington Mall. I didn't catch who they were, but they are obviously a group trying to pull themselves up in life. I think one line from their group creed will stay with me though this still long recovery process - We cannot fail because we won't give up.

RR, I like your names too, especially Wily.

Jude, this is a wonderful group of people, we are here for each other. I'm glad you joined us.

Ellen , I don't know yet what drugs I will go home on or stay on. I get 18 pills with breakfast, fewer with lunch and dinner. I will be on coumadin for a while. I reacted badly to the heparin drip with lots of bleeding and constant nausea so that was stopped and I am on increasing coumadin. Gina, send your tips please.

Tricia, your prayers for CF members always seem sent from your heart and I appreciate the ones for us.

Sally, thank you, we do remember the small things.

I have a vintage picture of another CRer in a Speedo, and I think I am ready for this one too.

Ann. my long and faithful friend, there are no words to express my gratitude for our friendship, on and off the forum. I hope that 2009 will be a year that the four of us can meet again.

Annie, LindaC, Woodie, Peppi, Linda, Lyra, Sharon and everyone else - thank you.

There is no therapy on Sunday so I've typed a little on and off all day. It probably sounds pretty mushy - but that's just how it is. I am hoping to go home with Max to Michael and Amy's house sometime this next week.

No, you don't sound mushy. To me, you sound like someone who has been through MAJOR surgery and is grateful to be on the upside of the recovery. Thank God!

Update...

Max and I are staying with Michael and Amy so I am out of the hospital. The move was late on Tuesday and had it's rocky moments which continued yesterday with severe nosebleeds. That is under control now and I am getting PT with a homebound therapist at their house.

It's a joy to be here! Both here in the sense of being with their family and HERE in the bigger broader sense.

I'm still getting tired very easily but am slowly walking longer distances. I have to get blood work done soon at the hospital lab and the therapist said that walking could count as my morning independent exercise. Then I have one therapist coming this afternoon.

Both Michael and Amy are great cooks and dinners have been delicious. I have someone in the family, this morning it's Amy's mom in the house with me all the time still.

Lee, I am glad to see you are out of rehab and at Michael and Amy's and that you have a therapist to work with you there. It is funny you saw the lantern with the candle while going to or from surgery.

Take care and remember as each day passes it is one day closer to completing your recovery. You are in my thoughts and prayers through your recovery, too.

So sorry to hear about your nosebleeds, but it's great to hear that you are out of the hospital. I hope you have a very speedy recovery, but don't try to rush it.

Lee, I don't come over to conversations very often but you have been in my heart and prayers. It's amazing that you are living, much less walking. I just know you are a walking miracle and are going to continue to do well. Thank you so much for taking the time to let us hear how you are doing. I know it has been a terrible struggle for you.
