I talked with Lee today............

..... Lee has been moved to a hospital/rehabilitation facility in Denver and will probably be there for the next two to 4 weeks. She sounds good and seems to be in good spirits. She was asking about all of you. She knows just how concerned everyone here has been. She tires easily but sometime in the next few days she is going to get on her lap top and visit the forum. How is that for great news!!!

Thanks, Ann. I think of her every day and Max too. I think of him home alone worrying about Lee and without Brockley to keep him company. I'm glad she's on the upswing.

I didn't realize it was such a long recovery. I am glad Lee is making good progress. I will continue to include you in my prayers.

I feel compelled to add my two cents to this post. Brandy, first and foremost, please realize that these forum members are hosta LOVERS, just like you and me; therefore, they really get concerned for any other member when there is even a slight chance of losing a hosta, whatever the reason, virus or no virus. I'm not going to be presumptuous and speak on their behalf, they do a good job on their own. But I have to admit that occasionally the written word doesn't come across the way it was intended. Bottom line: to curtail the spread of HVX Can you imagine how awful we'd feel if we unknowingly shared plants/divisions with our friends to find out later that those plants were diseased? We'd be responsible for spreading it. I shudder to think about it. I first found my JUNE and GOLDEN TIARA hosta at a grocery super store about 3 or 4 years ago. Both are growing very well and are lovely, healthy plants. It was the end of the season and the prices were unbelievable at $6 apiece. My HYDON SUNSET mini and BARBARA ANN were both purchased at WalMart, last and this year respectively. Both are doing just fine and I am happy with them. Two years ago (I think it was two years ago) I picked up DREAM QUEEN at WalMart. Shortly after I heard that Dream Queen was one hosta that was carrying the HVX virus. I immediately potted her up and quarantined her. I removed ONE leaf that LOOKED like it wasn't doing well, didn't look virused though, but to be safe, rather than chuck the whole plant (I don't throw anything out, ever, just can't do it) I just kept a watchful eye and babied it as I usually do with any perennial .... as I get a kick out of saving them. It is quite small still, in a pot, but very healthy. It's no longer by itself, but in some other potted company. I'll continue to monitor it just because it was on the HVX HIT LIST. The rest of my hosta were either given to me as divisions or were purchased at reputable nurseries....Some of them were purchased from home growers. I lost LOYALIST and ZOUNDS, both purchased from a grower who had infected plants, something I found out last year from another home grower. She has over 800 varieties and her business is booming. Her plants are extremely healthy, root system amazing. All of mine are doing great, no complaints! My entire hosta family (gotta be at LEAST 90 plants-76 varieties) looks healthy and is growing well. If I find a hosta ANYWHERE other than a reputable nursery, I will continue to buy....I'll buy wherever and whenever the fever hits me. The "buyer beware" phrase is always in my mind but I also use the common sense I was given. Important Note: I WILL NOT and DO NOT share divisions of any box store hosta growing in my garden until they have surpassed the monitoring years. Meanwhile, I am happy to see them grow into lovely mature hosta. So far, so good! :-) Brandy, if you re-read the last three paragraphs in Steve's post....and ..the last one should make you proud..a lovely compliment that I second. The long and short of it is that IF we (you and I) buy from a box store there is always the possibility that our good-looking-hosta-at-the-time-of-purchase may be virused.......a wait-and-see game.....common sense --keep in pot for a few years and monitor....fingers crossed. Dorothy, I never thought of it that way. Although, I have to admit that I enjoy watching DS deal with a two-year-old and it does seem like 'payback' (hee hee) for all the grief he gave us when he was little. So, I guess I'll get to enjoy watching him be on the adult side of the adult-teenager conflict one of these years. Paula, I remember that age well....."dumber than a box of rocks" pretty much sums up what most teenagers think about their parents when those kids reach that age. LOL Aren't you glad they outgrow it? You're raising some little gardeners too, and it reminds me of the old saying "If I'd known grandkids would be so much fun, I would have had them first." Isn't it just the most fun to share those home-grown pumpkins with the kids? I always get the greatest sense of pride from eating/using anything and everything we raised ourselves. And, you should be proud because your grandkids are learning early on just where their food comes from AND how they can be a part of the whole process. Mandy, If your mom says that your daughter's behavior is a little more "intense" than yours was, well, you know what that means.....it means it is your DH's fault because she got the entra fiesty genes from him! LOL I vote for having chickens. We have had them ever since we moved here and there's nothing better than farm fresh eggs. However, you absolutely must have a 100% predator-proof chicken coop and securely fenced chicken run or your kids' hearts will be broken when predators get your birds and your eggs. Every child that comes to our place is simply 100% fascinated with the chickens and their eggs. I know of at least one young boy who wouldn't eat eggs at all until he got to start gathering eggs at our house and taking them home with him. When I hear the name 'Felicity', two images come to mind. One is the TV show, 'Felicity', which was on in the late 1990s-early 2000s and starred Keri Russell in the title role. The other is the American Girls doll, Felicity. So, when I saw your daughter's name, those two pleasant images came to mind and now that you've described her, I can picture her in my mind and I see a darling and spirited young girl who loves to garden and who will, later on in her teens, give you every gray hair you have. I love traditional names too. Dorothy, Love the iron hand in the velvet glove reference. I think it is true, too. As long as those kids know there is an iron hand inside that velvet glove, the iron hand doesn't have to put in an appearance very often because just knowing it is there is quite a deterrence. You know, everyone, raising kids is a lot like raising a garden.....and don't we all know it! Dawn P.S. Mandy, I linked the American Girls website to show you their Felicity. Lee slipcovers--can I live with linen?

Thanks, Izzie. The linen slipcovers are washable, but it turns out they are only available through Crate and Barrel. So now I'm weighing the Sunbrella vs. various washable cotton slipcovers. This particular Sunbrella is for indoor use, and it's a bit softer than their outdoor material, but it still feels rough to me. Anyone living happily with light-colored cotton slipcovers in a busy household?

(((alisande))) Here, I'll make it the third one? Maybe. I was driving home the other day, and I had a blowout! Not just a flat tire. We heard BANG! and I said, what was that? He said maybe we ran over a rock? And then the car started to try to swerve. I did keep control and then I heard it--a flat tire. As I pulled over, it was smoking! Smelled like burned rubber to me, and it practically welded the tire to the axle?! What's worse? I just got the car in July (used, it's 18 years old) and I hadn't checked the spare to make sure it fit and was in good shape :O The equipment to change the tire didn't really fit or work well :( The jack would only turn a half turn at a time. The tire iron was too long? It kept hitting the ground. What was cool though? Someone else had fixed a flat in the exact same spot, and accidentally left a tire iron-that fit my bolts. I had another shorter tire iron, but it too, did not fit. So it took three tire irons, a lot of turning for the jack, and holding my breath for the tire to work. Yep, the tire turned out ok. I had planned to buy new tires next month, but now, I will have new tires this weekend. Two more days instead of two more weeks... hurray! Back to normal then. Whew. Now, we don't need a third car incident. How's that for closing the loop? Well, I tried!

Like Woodie, I was thinking about how Brockley. Lee made his food and took such good care of him; I was wondering if he knew something was up.

I was also wondering about Charlotte taking care of the store while Lee is recovering.

Lee, we all miss you so much. Rehab is not a whole lotta fun but do it and you will be fine in no time. I can't wait to see your first post.

Fabulous!! So glad she's moving into the next step.
Other friends who have had serious and invasive heart surgeries got on with recovery rapidly when they went to cardio re hab.

And there is a little bit of me that is realizing the additional difficulty of regaining cardio-vascular strength at a mile high!!
Cant' wait to hear from The Lady herself!

I'm trudging along on the 1 mile walk and 30 minutes of cardio everyday. I think of you the whole time Lee. I know you are going through alot.

I had a long chat with Lee yesterday. She was feeling quite a bit better than she had a couple of days earlier. She had been feeling nauseous , but once they changed her meds she was much better. From what she said, I gather rehab is quite tiring but she is expecting to be home within a couple of weeks. I think as soon as she is feeling up to it she will post something here.

It's been a long hard road for her to hoe....but I'
m glad she's feeling better and healing.
And I am sure that she will come out on the other side of this ordeal, skinny and sexy and feeling chipper with an interesting 'zipper' scar.

Hi all ..Lee is staying at her son Michael's because of the downstairs bedroom and bath.doing rehab and moving better......... she is still dealing with the meds and recovery from being imobile for so long but is way way better........ is walking more and moving more.......... the recovery from not being mobile for that long is slow..........but it is comming .......charlotte
