That is an accomplishment to be proud of!! I would be yelling from the rooftop. Best of luck to her; keep us informed.

*Spelling Bees of the future will probably be chat acronyms and text message shorthand.

Hooray for Alice! I'll keep my fingers crossed for her to win at the district contest!

I won a spelling bee in the 5th grade by correctly spelling antidisestablishmentarianism!

Thank you everybody for your kind thoughts. We got thru the 17th, and then Father's Day. Brycesmommy, you've been so in my thoughts and prayers. Your burden is great, too, and this time of year is especially difficult for you also. The past 2 years, we seem to be especially vulnerable starting with Mother's Day, then Millie's birthday, the anniversary of their deaths and then Father's Day. I do appreciate your kind words and the friends who called us just to say they know how terrible that day was. Somehow or another, we seem to be able to get things together later in summer, and then we function OK until Dave's birthday in October, remembering the glorious day on which he was born, and reviewing his life and how much we loved him. As I may have mentioned, Dave was a fine, fine baseball player in high school and college; he played until his early thirties, and then work and family left him with no time for baseball. He loved the game, and so did all of us. Last year, on June 17th, we visited his high school and walked to the baseball field. It was completely empty, school being out for the summer. On the bench in the home dugout was a single baseball. I think he left it there for us. This year on the 17th, I was walking my only other grandchild (she's 2) home, and there in the midst of a baseball field, newly dragged and devoid of footprints was a baseball! I think (and pray) that he's telling us that he and Millie are fine, but how terribly we miss them. Bless you all who are carrying such terrible burdens. You're in my prayers.

When my 27 year old daughter was about 6 we were looking to get a dog for the family. Putting that on hold for one Friday evening DH and I left the kids with a sitter and had a parents night out. Before dinner we stopped by an electronics store and bought a 27" Sharp TV. We put the large square TV box in the back of our mini-van and covered it with a blanket while we went to dinner. When we picked the kids up DD asked what was under the blanket. Joking, I told her it was our new dog. She lifted the blanket and without skipping a beat says "Oh, a Sharpei, I see." :-) I've always looked young for my age. When I was four mom took me to the movies one afternoon. The sign said "3 and under are free" so to save a few bucks mom told the ticket person that I was free. Feeling slighted, I stomped my foot and yelled, "I'm not free, I'm four!" Busted, mom! LOL Jodi-

My granddaughter's sky diving photos

We celebrated my daughter's birthday tonight, and watched the video. I had no idea how quick the skydiving experience is! The video was well done, though, using flashbacks to make it longer. These pictures are stills taken from the video. I asked my daughter if she wore a helmet, and she said no. They pointed out that a helmet wouldn't do a lot of good if something went wrong skydiving. (Although I suppose one could fall during the landing.) My DD and her family always wear helmets when they ski or bike.

Great! Cheering her on. It can be a lot of pressure.
By the way, Tricia, the mother of Callie and Saoirse was also a spelling bee winner. Seems almost like yesterday!

Wow, that's great. Good luck to DGD. I remember taking a test in the 8th grade to see if I would advance to a spelling bee. The word I had to spell was chamois. I had no idea what that was and I spelled it "shammy". Oh well -- be sure she practices that one.

What a great accomplishment! Every time I watch the Spelling Bee championships on television, I'm amazed at the knowledge base of these young kids. I hope Alice makes it on to the next round!

Thanks for all the well wishes...I'm sending her this thread. Alice is very competitive, enters about ever contest that comes her way. Skiing, 5k races, soccer, poetry readings, and now the spelling bee. She also plays both violin and piano. Last summer she started her own business doing henna tattoos even creating a website. Unfortunately, she ran into a bit of "legal" problems with her business due to her age (and not telling her parents about her new business!); but she's downsized her goals & is earning her own spending/savings money on a more local effort with friends. Alice has a lot of self-motivation. It's been fun watching her grow and develop. Math is her favorite subject and she's been teaching her youngest brother (1st grade) fractions. :) Downside? She gets bored easily and is off to the next challenge. She has the luxury of time on her side now to try lots of different things. I wish I would have had her adventureness at twelve.

Good luck to Alice. Ashley went to Districts 4 years in elementary and middle school, she went to the state competitions twice, it's very fun and I was amazed at how those kids could spell, and it is very competitive.

I hope she makes it into the next round.

Your granddaughter reminds me of my sister, who is 1-1/2 years older than I am. We were both very competitive in school, and she played the piano, and I played the violin, but your DGD does both! I very much appreciate anyone who is concerned with proper spelling - so many people do not appreciate that - until they try to do a Google search and wonder why they cannot find what they are looking for.

Self-motivation is something that I think cannot be taught, and so she is very fortunate to have been born with it. I used to enter almost all contests in school - with the exclusion of sports, although I was on the track team in Jr. High. I did not feel as comfortable competing in athletics as I did in more scholastic contests. It's nice that she has these opportunities available to her, and it's great that she could start her own henna tattoo business! Math was one of my favorite subjects in school also.

Does she like to sew? If so, you might want to consider giving her a sewing machine, if her parents do not own one. I was forbidden to use a sewing machine as a child/teenager, and I would have loved having my own.

That's wonderful! I am always amazed that anyone can spell from memory in that way. I know they work very hard.

Love the story about her henna business.

All the best to Alice!

I also have a very competitive Alice. :)

Best wishes from the other coast.
