My granddaughter's sky diving photos

I'm glad I didn't know about this adventure until after the fact. I don't know who took these (a photographer floating by, perhaps?), but they're pretty good. She has 70 pictures altogether, including the free fall, vertical descent with parachute, and (perfect) landing.

In this one I think she looks like Superwoman making a rescue.

I see he got his face out of the way of her hair once in a while. :-)

I wonder if he's reaching behind him to activate the main parachute......?

Whew!!

Great Pics!!!! Congrats to your gd for going for it. I did that too a few years ago and it was awesome although my chest muscles hurt the next day from the pressure of the wind I think. I imagine she had her own camera person, as I did, that jumped with them and took stills and then continued free falling after they pulled their chute so he could beat them to the ground and get pics of her landing. This brought back some great memories.....I gotta pull out my pics again and look at them. Again, CONGRATS to her!!!!!
A thrilling experience to say the least.

Sorry didn't chance to get back here. I go through so many forums on GW that I have to make the "rounds". LOL! John - we have alot of crapes in the landscape here in the Philly/Delaware County area. These are no longer die-backs in city locations (meaning they don't die back to the roots and they sprout their new leaves from the canopy) and are seen more and more in the landscape at 10 - 15ft tall and getting bigger every year. People are even planting them in their front yards away from the house. There are all sorts here - particularly ones like the popular and hardy "Natchez", "Sioux", "Tonto", etc. I think what has helped is that the lowest temps here haven't gotten below 0° F since 1994. I have a "Victor" crape which is a dwarf and it literally hasn't grown to more than 3ft in its 14" container. It's starting to bloom now itself. The figs were very slow to sprout due to the very cool spring but I am looking at expanding the selection. I bought my sister and brother-in-law a Celeste last summer for in-ground, had them plant it at the SW corner of their house, it made it through the winter with protection and is growing pretty well in the heat. Haven't been by there to see what's happening with it but as long as it is establishing itself (it was a 4ft baby), that's fine with me. As for amount of sun - Since I am up about 150ft or so in the sky with nothing to block the sun like trees or buildings (other than the hills about 5 miles to the NE of me, although I'm on a hill myself about 400ft above sea level), in summer, I get sun from sunrise at ~5:50am until about 11 am (or later for those plants that have branches hanging over the rail that can catch a couple more hours of "rays" before the sun goes up over and behind the building). I have seen sun on an extended branch of my tropical hibiscus until almost 1pm. And since I am on the end on the western side of the building, I can get about 3 - 4 hours more of afternoon sun over on the western corner of the balcony as it sets (from about 4pm until sunset ~8:30pm or so). Thus I try to put some of the real sun lovers over on the western end of the balcony so they can get sun in the front and later, sun from the side and rear during summer. Only thing is that it is windy over on that side. Good luck with the camera! I hope to eventually get a pic of my opuntia humifusa in bloom next year. It's growing quite a few pads now. I've overwintered it outside the past 2 winters in a clay pot (my only plant in a clay pot) and it shrivels down during winter and plumps back up each spring. I think that it needs more sun earlier in the season to get the bloom triggered though... something I have to think about with respect to where to place it. Cady - I've had a number of evergreens over the years - mostly different pierises as it's one of my favorites. I actually have a minature one out there right now that is new and it's sortof lost in the shade of other stuff. My honeysuckles are semi-evergreen but what usually gets things out there are the dessicating winds in late winter. Even with some of the protection schemes, it has been difficult finding a good spot to put evergreens where they're not in an eventual wind tunnel. But I'll keep experimenting! I have a heuchera this year and those are supposed to be evergreen so I'll see how that goes. You mention willows and I have a pussy willow (Salix discolor) out there that has been forming its catkins for next year.

Let's see photos of your volunteer roses or roses from seeds
Q

I'm sure some of our found roses are self seedlings which volunteered somewhere. Rose seeds have long been available commercially, and particularly Chinas and "Fairy Roses" were distributed as seeds. R. Xanthina was brought to the US by Meyer (of Meyer Lemon fame) as seeds and raised once here. He found both single and double forms from those seeds. Slater's Crimson China, among others, was sent out as seed. It is very successful as a self seeder, too. Any wonder why there are so many variations, all identified as Slater's Crimson China? If "grandma" planted some seeds, or some came up in her garden, of course only the most vigorous, healthiest would have been selected to maintain. Those would likely have been the ones relatives passed around and even planted in the family plots. Often, selfs resemble the parents quite closely. Not exactly, but close enough for someone to look at them and proclaim they are this, or that variety. Grow them side by side and you'll see differences. Micro sports also occur all the time, altering basic traits just enough to change the rose so it's no longer the original. You might find a less, or more, double mutation. Take a look at Awakening and New Dawn. They COULD be mistaken for the same rose if you didn't know one or the other well enough, but they aren't the SAME rose. Kim

Gorgeous specimens of Halcyon, Harry! That scene makes a beautiful picture...compliments re the play on colours - very lovely! Nope, no outside pips emerging...lots of rain, snow melting rapidly and I can see some potted hosta exposed now YIPEE...but they have chunks of ice covering them. Here's something you don't see often....this is a "pot" sculpted out of ice that sat on my deck all winter. I placed an empty pot inside another and it got buried under our first snowfall....never to resurface till last week. I'll never forget this sight!

Pictures from this weekend: This is a BAD foliage picture. Found this nasty future grove of burning bush in my woods. I knew about the burning bush in the foreground and was keeping an eye on it. I kept pruning it to keep it from seeding until I got around to digging it out or cutting it down. But the one in back of it I never saw until yesterday when the seedlings caught my eye. Cute colorful geranium caught my eye: This pulmonaria foliage has been picture perfect for months. Its neighbors aren't too shabby either: This is the little 2-3' sourwood I got this spring at GITW. What great potential this has for spectacular fall color when it gets bigger: This is another cotoneaster, Tom Thumb, but this shows another pulmonaria still looking great. Other than evergreens (and the fothergillas still shining brightly), thats pretty much all the color I could find yesterday. waaaahhh... its almost over...

My daughters both did that once...always wanted to do it again...but after they got kids, they both changed their minds of doing so.

Both my girls had to wear helmets.

I'm surprised you gd didn't have one on.

She sure is a pretty girl.

Beautiful girl and awesome pictures. She is a lot braver than I ever was. I've flown before, but I will go sit with Lavon and Patti. I don't ever want to fly again.

I'm amazed she was allowed to jump without a suit or even a helmet. My DD and her friends have sky-dived. Always had to suit up. She has it on video.

Ha! It would be unthinkable for me to do that today. These days I'd probably throw up a few seconds into the air. My pictures would be really attractive....

I don't even like to fly anymore, so save me a seat, Lavon, Patti, and Marilyn.

However, I do recall that at my granddaughter's age (19), I thought it would be thrilling to go sky diving. Fortunately, it was just a passing thought.

My daughter (her mother) went sky diving last year. I think she wore a helmet.......I'll have to ask her about that.

Thanks, everyone!

Oh how happy she looks! More power to her. There's no way I'd ever even consider that. My son took my daughter sky diving for her 18th birthday and when they asked if I wanted to watch I told them no. I didn't need any more anxiety.

She got great photos. When my kids went they had to wear helmets so it was really hard to even recognize them.

I am surprised how many of you or you family have done this ! I think I am a brave person in some areas, but this sure is NOT one of them !
Also glad to see I am not the only one who cares not to fly!

Skydiving is not on my bucket list, but I do enjoy watching others do it.

My first thought when I saw the pictures is where is her helmet and gear? Yikes!

I've done it a few times and bought the video both times. It goes so fast that having the video makes you remember it all over again. Well worth the bucks for pic and/or video.

We celebrated my daughter's birthday tonight, and watched the video. I had no idea how quick the skydiving experience is! The video was well done, though, using flashbacks to make it longer. These pictures are stills taken from the video.

I asked my daughter if she wore a helmet, and she said no. They pointed out that a helmet wouldn't do a lot of good if something went wrong skydiving. (Although I suppose one could fall during the landing.) My DD and her family always wear helmets when they ski or bike.

I did this too in the late '70's and it was really fun. No one was taking pictures, though, so I have no proof!! I did a solo jump with a static line that someone on the plane pulled and then the chute opened. It was scary and exciting at the same time. I'd never do it again!!! :)

I have never, and will never, sky dived, but my Mom did on her 62nd birthday.

This apple fell far from that tree! LOL

Caroline, I would say your mom is unique......I don't know anyone in their sixties who would be even tempted to skydive (but then I've never asked). :-)

Lillie, you're right--people tell her all the time that she looks a bit like Kate Hudson.
