Help! Attempting to remodel a tiny bathroom!

I have a tiny bathroom and 2 growing children (5 and 7) and am hoping to remodel soon, before the teen years sneak up and our family of 4 is fighting over the bathroom sink!

Basically, this tiny bathroom has a fairly large window and 2 doors (one to the hall and one to our master bedroom). On the other side of the bathroom of probably equal size is our walk in closet. I'd be happy to size down on that if it meant a larger/friendlier bathroom...or just any ideas of how to make this a better space!

We are 50/50 as to if we're staying here "forever" of not, if I knew that I'd get rid of the bath altogether and have a nice large shower and an actual LINEN CLOSET (imagine that!). I don't think we can get rid of the window, we could probably get rid of the door to our room. I had thought maybe those doors that slide into the wall coming from the hall but we have this stupid baseboard heater next to the toilet along one side and outlets on the other side by the sink.

Anyways-sorry for the rambling...any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi,
So a few additional questions. Is this the only full bath on this floor? I assume the door to your bedroom is the one on the left. Depending on how the walk in closet is configured, then perhaps you could you make the pocket door slide that way. Having the measurements for this room and the closet would make this easier to make recommendations.

In your case, I would look to something like Barker Cabinets for an RTA cabinet that can be made to the exact specifications you need. I put one together in this link that is 28" (1" filler on each side) by 16" deep. You can buy paint grade or wood. You can choose your door style and have pull out shelves added if you like. You can also customize the height if you want to do a vessel sink. You can order them raw, or painted or stained. This bathroom is small enough that I'm not sure it actually meets modern code (e.g., 24" of clearance in front of toilet bowl), so don't change anything big. I'd take down all the tile, if possible and just put tile on the floor (and drywall on the walls). Then a new sink -- maybe a modern wall-hugger rather than trying to squeeze in a vanity -- and paint everything light and bright, with lots of good lights too. I'd follow the stained glass for accents, say gold and pale pink, but really if you can find some art that you like, that's a better guide too. Here are a few ideas: Have fun, and good luck!

Ok. I have an idea! First of all let’s do a sliding barn door on the outside so we save on some room. Then I think you do need a bathtub. I totally agree with your family ... but! I’ve seen a standing tub in a shower. I’m wondering if this can work in this small space. I’m going to try finding pictures.... but I think as big as we can make the shower we can try to see if a tub works also. This is to maximize the space you do have. Am I making sense?

I would do a cabinet with the sink rather than over the toilet. I have three pics to show you. And could have or could show you billions. The first two are layout ideas. Please do not focus on the style of he pictures. As that is not what I’m showing. The third is a small bathroom style idea which I love. And think it opens up the space as much as it can. Uses the potential. And you can do the same. Tile depends. I would probably say to stay super neutral and do all the walls and more intricate floor tile.

Is this the only full bath? I wouldn't get rid of the tub, if it's your only one. You'll get a lot more helpful replies if you embed the pic in your post. Many people(including myself) will not bother to put an unknown site into their browser.

Take a screen shot of your bathroom plan by hitting SHIFT + Prt Scr. Paste it into Paint. Crop out all the excess stuff & save it. Upload it to a photo sharing site like Photobucket or Shutterfly, then copy the html code and paste it into the body of your post.

If this is not the only bathroom with a tub, then I would convert the tub to a shower & use the additional space as a linen closet. Since it's not your "forever" home, I would stay within the current plumbing configuation to minimize your remodel costs...once you start moving plumbing, you're in for double the expense, so ask yourself if it's really worth it...would cosmetic updating - tile, paint, new fixtures, new floor, make it do-able??? Cause considering the door placement & overall size, getting creative with the floorplan will be challenging & expensive.

I'd be tempted to close up that door to the master in order to fully use the space. Right now you're losing a lot of real estate to door swings. I'm not a big fan of the multiple door situation, because inevitably one door is left locked and you have to go around anyway.

Can you post the dimensions of the room?

laxsupermom is, in my opinion, on the right track with the suggestion to close one of the doorways. If the one to the right of the basin accesses a bedroom, removing it would provide space for a linen closet, or separate shower.

Judging from fixture placement, your room must be about 6' x 8'. We updated a 5' x 8' hallway bath a couple winters ago. No linen closet space so we installed a train rack to store towels. If you don't install a separate shower, the curved shower rods really enlarges a tub shower and does better at keeping water in.

Oh my gosh! Thank you for all the replies!

I had signed up for email notifications if/when someone responded and never got an email, so I assumed no one reponded!

Ok, the dimensions are 9x6 approximately. Yes, the door on the left goes into our bedroom and the walk in closet is directly behind the tub.

The sink actually goes all the way to the door but that program didn't have any sinks that size.

My problem with getting rid of the door from our room to the bathroom is that I would have NO idea how to best utilize that space. There is a wall sticking out to enclose the bathtub, which basically makes that spot dead space, with or without the door. We have a small (6 feet tall, 18 inches wide) free standing linen cupboard up agains that wall.

If I were to get rid of the door, and put in a linen closet, would it face the tub just as the sink does?

I'd love to take that wall down and put in a corner tub but I don't think that would work with how little space we have.

Can you post a drawing with more dimensions. We'd need the length of the wall from the sink wall to the tub wall. I assume that's a normal 6" wall, then the length of the tub. Basically all the dimensions in the room not just the total wall length. Also, it'd be helpful to see some of the surrounding areas. You said we could steal room from the master closet, but without knowing the size and configuration of the bordering spaces, it's hard to come up with suggestions.
