OT: which digital picture frame for my Mom

I want to get my mother a digital picture frame - and eventually scan our old photos and load them in her frame - and for now get some pictures on an sd card for her. I know I want a 4:3 aspect ratio which rules out the Sony (which is also a bit pricey for me).

Some have a feature where any of her kids/grandkids could email pictures to a special email account that goes with the frame - and she could just open them on her frame. This sounds like a great idea - if in reality it works - and if the picture quality is decent. Any recommendations?

Smartparts and estarling seem to have this feature - reviews are variable. GiiNii may be good - less expensive - no email.

Important facts - she lives nearby so I can periodically load a card for her and give her fresh photos (but she has cats and I'm VERY ALLERGIC - so I can't do that on a regular basis). She could get new cards from me - more possible - assuming she can put the card in the frame (I think she could master that much). If the other relatives were good about sending me pics, I'd compile them periodically - but they're not good at it - and my mother would get more photos if they could just email them to her as they get a good one. But if those frames are problematic or poor quality, I'll stick with the ones you have to load onto sd card or memory stick.

And I'm not very tech savvy either - but many of you here know that and have been so helpful - so that's why I'm posting here.

I have one comment. My in-law's got one for Christmas, problem is that it has a tiny little remote that they can't read, even with glasses, so they can't turn it on. They won't let us turn it on either, in fear that they won't be able to turn it off. I don't remember what brand, but ease of operation might be a consideration.

I did a little more exploring bc. I should order this tonight in order to get it on time. This shows how slow I am with technology. It just occurred to me that the ones where you can email pictures to the frame won't work - now that I think about it, I think they must require a wireless connection to a network. My mother doesn't have a network or router - and that much technology (even if I set it up for her - which wouldn't be an easy feat for me) would overwhelm her.

So I think I'll stick with a digital frame that takes sd cards and connects to the computer via usb (or something) - not wireless.

So - given a 4:3 ratio, decent picture quality, easy of use, 7-8 inches. Any recommendations?

I used one recently. It was a large 19" frame and I had it on a tripod. We were relocating and our larger/better furniture had been shipped. We were living with bare essentials and the house looked empty. I placed the frame in the empty family room. My realtor liked it and got positive comments from buyers. I had loaded about 10 photos, mostly showing how the rooms looked with furniture. I also had a few aerial shots showing the house and property. The house sold in 2 months this past summer. I don't think it "sold" the house, but it was a useful tool in our situation. We purchased the frame from photovu.com. They are pricy, but it is a great way to display the seemingly endless digital photos we seem to accumulate on our computer!!

That's a wonderful idea. She's coming today around noon to pick it up. I'm almost certain she will be thrilled with it. I keep staring at it and smiling. I took pictures before of the other gowns I did and then my computer crashed and I lost all my pictures. Luckily, they were friend's babies, so they resent me some pictures.

It depends on how the picture was taken? What resolution? What megapixel is your camera and did you shoot at the highest resolution? How large do you want your print? Screen resolution and print resolution are very different. I could view a print on line at 72dpi and it would look great. Don't try to print at that resolution tho. It would be best to print at 300dpi but I've been pleased with 5x7s at 250dpi. Walmart digital printing (on line) will warn you if you try to upload a photo and print at a size and resolution that's less than optimum. Monica

Shea. .a digital picture frame allows you to view about as many pictures as your heart desires by showing them as a slide show. The frames come in many sizes, as well as keychains. I, personally like to download my pictures on an SD card, it goes into a slot on the back of the picture frame. Rather then download them right to the frame. It is easier to me anyway, to take the sd card out to add more pictures to it. I have a 2G card in my frame and it will hold over 1000 pictures. My husband has one at work on his desk with about 300 pictures on it. I gave my mother in law one for Christmas last year with pictures from the time she was a little girl up till now. It's a great way to display and view pictures with limited space for regularly framed pictures. Walmart has working ones on display if you want to see exactly what they look like working. I have a 10" on in my kitchen but some day I'm going to have a 19" one on the wall. They really are not complicated at all. You just put the blank sd card into your computer and download the pictures you want onto the card, then plug the card into the back of the frame and turn it on. .They really are wonderful.. .any other questions? . .debbie

Pam has a valid point on the remote, ours on a Sony is tiny. So I just set 150 pics to run randomly and have yet to try mastering the remote, probably I will not bother. Remember too, once the novelty of the remote has worn off you can let it slip between the cushions on the settee LOL.

I have a smartparts and love it, the remote is about the size of a pack of playing cards but very thin but easy to see with large buttons, all I have to do is stick my usb thumb drive in it and upload the pictures to the frame memory, it turns off each night at a specified time and turns on in the morning at a set time, it is great and very easy to use. I really like it and would recommend it, my husband got it for me for Christmas from costco. I just got a little piece of the self stick velcro and stick the remote to the back of the frame so I don't lose it.
You do not need any type of connection other than plugging it into the power. Mine is 8.4 inches which is perfect for my desk. It does the various fades in and out and auto rotation and transitions, the pics are extremely clear.
