Southeastern pocket of CFers-Get Together?

We talked about a get-together once the holiday rush was through, so are we ready? I'm interested regardless if it's just in Nashville and some come or if it's in Birmingham and we include others farther away.

I'm game for anything that is in our region. I am ready! What about you? Who and where?

Depending on where and when, I would certainly try to come for a meet-up. I'm in Burlington, NC, in the middle of the state. I need a weekend day as I work full-time. And we need to keep an eye out for the weather as much of NC and SC have had several snow/ice storms so far.

This is really a great thread! I just wanted to chime in a bit. I just finished planting 140 trees on about 1 acre, and it went pretty well. I planted: 25 Common Lilac 15 Manchurian Crab 25 White Pine 32 White Spruce 10 Bur Oak 5 Paper Birch 5 Silver Maple 5 Black Cherry 5 Red Oak 5 Rugosa Rose 2 Red Maple 5 Red Pine 4 Hybrid Poplar In addition, this summer, I planted 4 larger trees... a bur oak, an Autumn Blaze Maple, a Siouxland Cottonwood, and a Red Splendor Crab It will be interesting to see how fast everything grows. The clone of Hybrid Poplar I planted can grow anywhere from 5-10 feet per year.. while the bur oak will grow at a glacial 6-18" per year over its entire life. In 1996, about 60 red pines, 10 white pines, and 10 black hills and blue spruce were planted on our land. In 2007, the tallest Red Pine is about 15 feet tall, the tallest White pine is about 12 feet tall, and the tallest spruce is 7 feet tall. Of course, these were all started from seedlings with no weed control for the first 3 years, and only mowing after that (when we moved in). We no longer mow the eastern portion of the property, where red pines are growing. There are a few clearings among the trees, and some shrubs are starting to become established. Among them are Rugosa Rose, low bush blueberry, chokecherry, and American Hazelnut. To date, not one hardwood tree has seeded. Under our deck, however, about 6 Boxelder seeds germinated, and one vigorous and desperate sapling is about 4 feet tall in its second year. I will transplant it to the edge of our property when the leaves drop... Otherwise, the land we own on a lake is already forested... and it's more of a question of management than anything. I desperately want to clear some of the underbrush (it's nearly impossible to walk through the woods here... so thick with underbrush). Between the Beaked Hazel, tree saplings, fallen logs, grass clumps, and various other shrubs, if yo'ure not tripping and trying to regain balance, you have several small branches trying to enter your head through your eye sockets. You basically have to close your eyes and bore your way through the woods with your hands in front of you, shielding your face.

Okay! Who slipped something into my drink!!?? Knocked me right out!! lol I've been very busy this week end. Yesterday I got a wonderful box from Annie! A BIG WOOHOOOOOO!!!! This is what she sent me...:) Iris 'Thornbird' - I bought this last year and then gave it away, so I'm so happy to have another one! I really love it! Iris 'Thriller' - I love the color of this, it's a beauty! Iris 'Gay Parasol' - Another gorgeous one! Iris 'Coral Point' - I have no Iris' in this color, LOVE it! Iris 'Dappled Pony' - This one is awesome, it's speckled with purple, just beautiful! :) Hosta 'Fair Maiden' Love it! Hosta 'Waving Wuffles' This is sooo cool!! Hosta 'Takudamu Aureonebviosa' ?sp. I love the coloring of the leaves! and my prize Hosta 'Wolverine' These Hostas are such a nice variety of leaf coloring and shape! Thank you sooo much Annie!! I love them all! Everything arrived happy and healthy! So, with all of these new additions I talked hubby into tilling me a Shade Bed!!!!!! :) :) :) I spent all day/late afternoon working on it, an then had to get ready for a wedding dance. Today I went and bought mulch and another Hosta, 'Fragrant Dream' ($3.99) and 2 Heucheras 'Melting Fire' ($3.99 ea.) When I got home I spent the next 2 hours digging a little trench around the bed, filling it and the bed with mulch and planting all of my new additions to it! I still need to plant my Iris' from Annie, but I'll do it tonite. I need a break! Tracy, I have your prize plants planted in there also. You may not be aware that Lumbricus rubellus is invasive and is threatening North American Forests. Quoting from: Invasive EarthwormsA Threat to North American Forests Plants & Gardens News : Volume 19, Number 1 : Spring 2004 by Niall Dunne http://www.bbg.org/gar2/topics/essays/2004su_worms.html "In 2002, Michael Gundale of Michigan Technological University published a report detailing how the epigeic bait and compost worm Lumbricus rubellus may be wiping out populations of the rare goblin fern, Botrychium mormo, and possibly other rare native plants too, in the Chippewa National Forest. Gundale credits the epigeic worm's destruction of mycorrhizal fungi in the soil as a reason for the goblin fern's decline. "John C. Maerz and colleagues from Cornell University have found strong evidence linking salamander decline in the hardwood forests of central New York and southeastern Pennsylvania to invasions by L. rubellus and Asian Amynthas species, among others. ..." "... With invasive earthworms wriggling amok in our forest soils, gardeners who use worms to decompose kitchen scraps and plant waste may want to take a closer look at what theyve got growing in their compost piles. Sally, I think it might be me you are thinkning of. I don't live IN Perth, but within cooee- a little over an hour away. Do try to come visit your brother, Perth and WA in general are great places. There are lots of good flight deals going on all the time so keep your eye out for one. (And besides a passport you'll need a visa but they're not very expensive and easy to get unless you have a criminal record, ha ha :-). ) I haven't heard from Daisy in ages. I think of her often though and hope she's OK.

Teresa, I haven't looked at a map, but if we met in Bham you would not have to go through the mountains, would you? To Nhvl you would have to go through 2 different ones, Asheville and Rockwood, I believe. (unless you went thru Atlanta). I fully understand what you're saying about the weather and I'm in complete accord.

Wondering why no one else had posted so I went back to the "Pockets of CF-ers" on Discussions and there were a bunch of CF-ers that indicated interest. Nancedar in the Wake Forest area, Love 2 weed in Ky, Beveryal in AL. Of course Teresa in Burlington has already posted. May be they don't check in on "Conversations" as often. Just a thought.

Would you like to come to Atlanta?

I have always wanted to meet some CF members in person and would be delighted to host a get together, say a brunch or lunch, and then a road trip to any food destinations you are interested in. Within 5 miles, there are two Whole Foods, a Trader JoeÃ¯Â¿Â½s, two CookÃ¯Â¿Â½s Warehouses (bring charge card). Within 15 minutes, there are malls with Sur la Table, Williams Sonoma, etc, and the DeKalb FarmerÃ¯Â¿Â½s Market (bring large cooler).

We are about halfway between Atlanta and Decatur, not far from so-called Midtown.

We are in the midst of planning a backyard wedding in mid-April, so I would prefer March or the last week in April or even May.

If Nashville is more convenient for everyone, I will come there.

How about Harry's Market?

I have been monitoring this since the original post in November waiting for the logistics to flesh out. I will be there if the time (late April) and location (Atlanta area) work into my schedule. But, it's not about working with my schedule so I have remained an observer.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of where it ends up! Just to be clear. "Southeast" was just so that one could drive easily. If you want to fly and meet us in Atlanta, it's a hub, so you could likely get there inexpensively.

Thanks Rob. Yeah, as we say down here "you even have to go through Atlanta when you die". I think I could drive to Atlanta with my eyes closed after all these years.

I vote for invading adoptedbygreyhounds house for brunch on April 30 in Atlanta, as she so graciously offered. Then going foodie shopping to wherever. It would be so fun to meet y'all.

And, Nashville in the early summer would be way fun, too, but not with snow covering the mountain passes to get there. Maybe we should split up and do both?

It's a 10 hour drive to Atlanta for me. Could be carpool if you want to stay for 4 days? As I said earlier, my son, DIL, and grandkids live there and we are retired so would plan on a longer visit than you, who has a job to go to. Sorry.

Teresa, if you could work it out, when would you leave your place? I'm thinking if you could drive to Kxvl we could go from here. I think at least one of my daughters will go too. Is it about 250 mi. from you to me? It's about 4 hrs to Atla from here.

Beverlyal, is there some way we could help? Is it the distance or...? My daughter says too bad, but we can't move the house to Birmingham or Nashville.

I was thinking some more. Which would be better? A brunch and then shopping or shopping and then dinner in the evening? Either way is fine with me, just let me know your preferences. Maybe a breakfast out the next morning.
I'm looking forward to the invasion, er, that is, to meeting you all.

It was heart-warming to see that deal develop and so like CF members.

Darn it, I'd love to, but it seems that my daughter has decided to get married about 3 weeks after that, and I'm doing the cooking and baking the wedding cake, so I'm going to be a bit....um.....tied up.

Even though we were all excited to go to Atlanta, our welcoming hostess, adoptedbygrayhounds, has died of lung cancer, unbeknownst to us, that she, Elizabeth, was suffering from it. Sad to say that, obviously, the trip has been canceled. We would all have liked to have met her, and be entertained by her, and have her guide us to the "best" gourmand stores, but, alas is not to be this time. Maybe next life? Refer to the post by Rob333. Such a loss.... She will be missed here for sure.
