Who owns your email?

Changed ISP from Verizon DSL to Optimum-On-Line due to multiple problems connecting to the Internet. Computer is used for work out of the home. All work-related emails were sent from Verizon to Outlook.

Cancelled Verizon, Cable got us running the next day, Verizon refuses to release a weeks worth of mail stating we cancelled the account. This is mail which came in during the week we had no internet connection - before we cancelled (we couldn't retrieve it).

There was important, business-related mail sent during the time prior to canceling which we need to retrieve. They refuse to forward the mail to the new address. I feel that is our mail, and they must forward it.
