Plates and Bosch Dishwashers - Picture Thread

I decided to take some pictures of our old Bosch loaded with plates. Initially, I took those pics because I looked at manuals from traditional US dishwashers with their Sea-Of-Tines lower racks and wondered how many plates one could fit in there. Looking at manuals, it seemed like 15 or so plates and the rack is full. Some manuals also suggested to overlap plates or tilt them forward, which seemed strange to me. Therefore, I decided to load the Bosch up with just plates - and the cutlery basket, since our model is from 2006 and the cutlery rack was still patented to Miele at that time - if I remember correctly.

So this is the empty lower rack. I think this is also what you get with some current American Bosch offerings like the 800 Plus Series. There is a cup rack in the back and a wire holder to accommodate two rows of stemware on the lower rack with the tines folded halfway down. You can see that the front row is spaced further apart for deep plates.

Here, I loaded regular dinner plates in the back section and deeper plates in the front one. The colorful plates to the right are thick earthenware and you can see they do tilt forward a little. Yet, there's still enough clearance in between them to get cleaned.

Switched them around and the same thing becomes apparent: the soup plates do tilt a little but the colored ones now have plenty of space in between them.

With the cutlery basket in there.

And this is probably the most I can fit in there.

Hi, Derek. Water hardness We've always thought our well water was hard, since installing even cheapo descalers on each of our shower heads made a noticeable difference. But the Bosch test strip only colored at the very end (unfortunately, I don't remember the precise reading). For now, we've opted not to use salt until we get an independent water test (which we need to do anyway just as a precaution because of the well). I can report back once we know for sure. Cleaning Ability In comparison with our previous 14 year old Bosch, this one does a fabulous job. For example, we'd made a lasagne-like dish last week that we re-heated over the weekend. The pan with the baked-on, blackened sauce came out of the DW "clean as a whistle." In the previous DW I would have still had to clean off the blackened bits by hand. I don't rinse plates -- though one of our Beagles seems to think that's his job! -- so we are not babying the DW. I had wondered how flatware in the third tray would clean. Stuck on cheese sauce and egg from breakfast, however, clean right off the fork tines. My only complaint is that glasses and mugs don't fit as well in the bottom rack as they did with our previous Bosch. Something about the tine angle and spacing, it seems. Since it's just the two of us, we end up with more dirty glasses and mugs than plates. But I'm learning how to get more and more in the DW over time, For example, to get our wine glasses to fit, I had to lower the middle rack to the lowest position. But that still left plenty of room in the lower rack: our 12 x 17 cooling racks fit on the outside edges and the KitchenAid bowl fits in with no trouble. The only weird event is that the Express wash used to take 30 minutes. Now it takes an hour. Gremlins?!

I found one technique for removing loose particles inside a spray arm on a Whirlpool dishwasher. It works when there is a small vertical displacement between the center hole in the sprayer and the smaller holes in the arm. It requires a bathtub or large basin with several inches of water so the spayer can be completely immersed while it is horizontal. Holding the sprayer flat, with the large hole in the center of the sprayer facing the ceiling, slowly lower it into the tub/basin. Water flows through the smaller holes in the arm-pushing debris to the center hole. The center hole submerges last. After the spray arm is completely immersed, turn over the arm, keeping it completely under water, so the large hole is facing the floor of the tub. Still holding it flat, lift up slowly. The smaller holes in the spray arms will break the surface first allowing air inside so water and debris drain through the large opening into the tub. I usually repeat this a few times.

Diamante Plus installed yesterday and I must say I am impressed, at least initially. Dishes were spotless with all default settings. A couple of questions at this time. With the hidden controls, do you actually have to power off the dishwasher, or will it turn off after a certain period of time? The installer suggested we try it without adding an water softener salt initally. Our water hardness is 10pbm, so not all that bad, but enough to not make our glasses perfect. Also, the installer did not install the heatshield. My husband told him that eventually we will be replacing our cabinetry & formica countertops but I am wondering if that was a mistake given we don't quite know when we will be doing the renovation. We know if do want to do one in the future though. I was so impressed with how quiet it is. It trumps the builder grade GE that we just got rid of by a mile!

You’ll want/need to buy stainless steel screws. There should be short ones already in the door that you can take out and match, but get longer. For my dishwasher, the install involved taking these shorter screws out that were in place in the naked door and switching them to longer ones that then attached to panel to the naked door. At the bottom of the naked door there were spots for little clips that you lock in first before you screw in the screws. Without the clips you can probably just use more screws, but it might be trickier to get the door perfectly straight. There are quite a few short screws in the door to allow different door combos, for example a single door panel or a drawer front + shorter door combo, so you can use several sets of screws holes to attach your door. As for your door thickness, I think it’s more a question of weight than thickness. I can’t see why the thickness would be a problem. But the weight of your thick panel might create challenges. A new panel ready DW generally comes with door spring tension set for the average weight of a custom panel. I’d say that’s a 3/4”-1” thick solid wood door. (This means the naked door is very hard to open with no panel attached). Your thicker door may be notably heavy compared to what they’re expecting. So you may need to adjust the spring tension, or your door will crash open as you pull it down. My vague recollection from the instructions was that there’s a way to adjust this tension, but I’m not sure, as I didn’t have to adjust mine. But it might be worth researching to confirm before you commit to 1.5” thickness… or maybe you’re better off going with just drawer fronts attached to a frame instead of a solid plywood layer to keep the weight down. and how about the second rack? I think i've mastered the lower rack and cutlery rack but still struggle with the middle one. Thanks for pics. I put the skinny plates in the back too. I never use the cutlery basket. Does anyone use it if they the third tray (upper cutlery rack)?

Well, this dishwasher is a my parent's house and I don't live there anymore. The pics were actually taken in April 2011... But tell me what you'd like and I'll see what I can do. Stay tuned. :-)

Very cool but who has - and uses - 37 plates at one time? My issues are with odd shaped things and bigger bowls and jars. And smaller items like cat food bowls and measuring cups. They end up all over the machine. I found a baby bottle top holder thingy that I put cat food lids and small containers in. It helps some.

I have only used the dishwasher about a dozen times but each time i am getting better at loading it... i could wait a few more days and wash more but i tend to wash sooner.

For me i don't seem to have any issues i have been washing milk bottles with tiny openings and they come out cleaner than ever, i do cutlery, bowl bowls bowls (have to angle em or the bases collect water) and plates and other dishes.

I think my tines are a bit different than the dw pictured.

Agree with oregpsnow. I had an old kitchen aid that would fit serving platters, large bowls, cereal bowls, anything that was odd shaped. My Bosch doesn't. I can't put serving dishes easily, and the only place my cereal bowls fit is on the first rack with the glasses. I've tried putting them below, but it just doesn't work. They are either too tight, or end up lying flat and take up more than one spot. Not happy with it at all.

Bosch seems to have about 10 different rack designs they're currently using. Some have a lower rack that loads most plates widthwise rather than lengthwise as shown here, and some have either less or more space between pegs/tines.
