Is it time to go to IE7 or are 'we' still holding

I again refused to take the IE7 update, I have IE6.0.2900 (assume that's the last version of IE6).

I do this in part because I use Firefox most of the time and I don't like the new tool bar layout of IE7. Then too, I've see a bit of dissatisfaction with IE7 reported here on this forum.

Looking for the current "thinking".

Hold. They haven't fixed a lot of problems and if you have an FTP site through your service charge (mostly with High Speed internet) you won't be able to access what you pay for. Its a lot slower, and you really don't want to be stuck with IE6 rollback either.

I must be the only person who hasn't had trouble with it at all. I use FF mostly, but have to use IE for my work. Amazingly, all the government sites and medical insurance companies only work with IE. I'm forced to use it during the day. But it works fast for me and I haven't had any problems at all. The toolbar is screwy but it's fine for work.

Yeah, this HP I'm using right now is going back to Sam's, anyway, as soon as the new Dell I just ordered comes... HP has BURNED ITS BRIDGES with me... after 35 months as a customer with first one, then two computers registered in their database and me ALMOST ordering a replacement for this defective piece of DISPLAYWARE I unfortunately walked out of Sam's Club with, I flaked out of the sale in the middle of the "Checkout" process the other night because I had a couple "issues" I couldn't resolve online (primarily a LONG buildtime I couldn't understand) -- at which point their system popped up a little window asking if I was having a problem I couldn't resolve online and would like someone to call me, and if so, to leave my first and last name, and a phone number and click continue, which I did... then I made sure my "cart" was saved so I wouldn't lose the configuration I had set up, as it takes a few minutes to get one like you want it if you don't just want a stock system (and if I wanted that I'd buy the cheap junk they sell pre-built, like what I'm taking back, lol)... and then I closed the HP window and went about my business... When I hadn't had a call from HP by Monday night (that was Sunday night), I logged on last night to see what was going on, and it showed my cart was EMPTY (of course NAV ran in the interim, so my cookies probably got cleaned, but I DID have an account using my email address and a password, for like 3 years now), so I tried logging on, and my password didn't work... Well I have a few different ones, so I figured maybe I FORGOT which one I was using with HP, so I clicked the "forgot my password" link and plugged in my email address and they HAVE NO RECORD of my email address... So I called them up and talked to one of their sales people, and he searched the computer, and they have NO RECORD OF MY EMAIL ADDRESS, NAME, OR PHONE NUMBER (the primary ways they would have me referenced), which means they likely don't even have my current computer and monitor (the ones that are going back to Sam's and still have 10 months fo warranty left -- supposedly) in their database with my name on them any more. Well, THAT DID IT -- Dell got the sale... But now it's been more than 24 hours since I closed THAT sale, and although I immediately got an automatic email from THEM "acknowledging" the order, I've yet to get the "order confirmation" email, with the "order number" and my "customer number," etc. I just KNOW you folks didn't care about all this jazz, but I'm just SO freakin' frazzled and frustrated with these #$%^&* computer companies right now I could EAT A BULLFROG!!! :-P Somebody PLEASE "pass me a Coke and a smile" or SOMETHING! :) At any rate, with this HP Media Center that's going back to Sam's (not ONE, but TWO defective CD drives, and a cordless mouse that eats batteries like CHEESE), the FIRST THING I did when I got it was create the System Restore disks and Restore it to factory condition (considering it had been a display model for like 8 months, I thought that was QUITE PRUDENT, huh?)... So that's happening AGAIN before it goes back to Sam's, so they don't get anything I paid for, lol, and in the case I.E. 7 DID cause any problems, they'll all go bye-bye... And I'm guessing if this new Dell system EVER DOES "confirm" and ship, it'll COME with I.E. 7, so I really won't have to worry about it, since I really won't have a choice, lol. Ummmmmmmmm, anyone wanna give me a ride to the funny farm so I don't have to leave the car there? :-P

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'll tackle this next week. And Genes, I leave the auto-update on because it really is very convenient. I'm not sure this problem had anything to do with that because they have been begging me to download IE7 for months--but they never did it without my permission before. I still have not installed it or decided to. Just don't want any headaches I can't fix.

When IE7 installs it moves IE6 into the Windows folder and puts IE7 in your Program Files; "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" You might go there and right click iexplore.exe choose properties and see if it shows as IE7 - if so, double click it. Hopefully once started it will take over and continue to work. .... You might go read about System File Checker(support.micosoft.com) and run it... SFC Â /scanonce That will fix corrupt files and drivers and some of their configurations too. One way to repair Internet Explorer and numerious other problems is to reinstall SP2 ... assuming you're on XP. Being how you cant access update.microsoft.com you may have to search for and download xp sp2 at download.microsoft.com.

Cynic- I was searching forums to read what people were saying. I've since read more. A number of people were saying their system crashes all the time with Opera. Then others agreed and advised against mixing the too. The funny thing or frustrating thing, mine is freezing up constantly with IE7. I've only been using it for three days now, but was also having that problem recently before the switch. I have DSL and, as of three days ago, have a brand new and MUCH faster desk top. So I'm not really sure what the problem is. My connection seems fine. Of all the reading I've done (which really isn't all that much) there really seems to be an equal number of people that either prefer Opera or FF. With a scattered few that still really like IE7 (compared to IE6). I'll keep doing my homework. Thanks :o)

Ok, thanks and I'll hold off for a while longer, just as I'm doing for Vista, in fact the one "free" upgrade I have for a December 2006 Dell PC, runs out soon, if it hasn't already. Interestingly, PC magazine's evaluation (performance test) of Vista including running it on my "Vista Compatible" Dell C521 (as I recall the model number) and they said it did run (against workbench measures) slower with Vista. My later purchase of an old shelf stock Gateway notebook didn't come with an offer for a free upgrade to Vista, but I purchased the old shelf stock for two reasons: it came with XP and it was deeply discounted. Always looking a $$$$, not always the best approach but has worked for me for many-many years.

Hi Jerry,
I would hold unless you need to use IE (like Jane needs to do).Anybody with IE7 should take the test below to show you if your as secure as you think you are.

The advise I try to follow, for better or worse, is try to avoid major software upgrades until I am in need of a new machine and then buy it with the upgaded software already installed.

So...those of you who are waiting, will you "have" to get it at some point in time? I just bought a new computer and they advised me not to have IE 7...I went with it anyway, and haven't had any problems. My feeling was that it is coming and you will have to have it sometime, so I thought I might as well do it now. But..like I said, I've had no problems.

No Vista upgrade for me . I have friends with a software business they upgraded to Vista then spent all week down grading. Nothing but trouble .. Not doing IE7 until I hear better things about it . Gin

I have IE7 on one machine, but continue to hold on my latest, a Gateway Notebook, purchased this month in part because it was old shelf stock and has XP. The machine with IE7 isn't a problem, it is my wife's and she uses only Firefox, and I do the updates on XP, it is not set to automatically update. That's about it for the use of IE7 at my house.

I have it on both my desktop and notebook and no problems. I seldom use it as I prefer Opera and Firefox. But I do use it for MS updates and a few websites that don't work so well on the other browsers.

I have been running IE7 (I should say it's running in the background of my sbc yahoo browser, I use both) for about a month now. One thing I noticed when I switched from IE6 to IE7 was an increase in pop ups, even though I have two different popup blockers installed. Three nights ago, I received an update from microsoft, I believe it has to do with melicious softwares detection. Anyway, not one popup has gotten through since the update, so I am hoping that solved the problem. It was generally about one or two popups every time I was on the 'net (generally for about a half hour to an hour's time). I was about ready to roll it back to ie6, but now I think I will keep it and see how it goes. I do like a number of the new features, especially the tabbed browsing.
