IE 7 downloaded without my permission

My computer just downloaded IE7 without my clicking on anything. I've had them asking me to install this for months but I don't want it. It's downloaded but not installed. How do I un-download it?

My computer is set to automatically install critical updates but IE7 has remained in the recommended column and has not automatically installed. I am really annoyed and don't want the headaches that go with this.

I have a Dell 8300, Windows XP SP2, high-speed broadband, cable.

I received IE 7.0 the same way. The only differece is I installed it. After it caused me problems with my HP 3-1 and
my exterior hard drive, I right clicked it - properties -
Find Target - Select all - Delete.
I no longer get it on my updates.

You could try just deleting the IE 7.0 exe
Maybe it won't try to download any more.
Or you could move it to the unused desktop shortcuts.

My only other question will this remove the problematic security that came with IE7 and rollback IE6? But either way...it would be a lot easier than starting over. This is so trite..but everyone that plays Morrowind is suffering CTD's (Crash To Desktop) within around an hour play. Morrowind has a history of CTD's, but especially now, its like every ten minutes because Bethesda (game maker) didn't author the mods. Part of the game is modding and there's a huge modding community that offers up about a thousand or more changes, free, to players through Planet Elder Scrolls. I've never come across a virused mod and they check them pretty carefully before they wind up on File Planet (mod downloader)...I always scan my downloads before I install them, I unblock them and Microsoft,recently, is just having fits that the new tapestry I wsnt to put in my game didn't come from Bethesda! One poster on a Morrowind forum wanted to get a gun and shoot his game. MY IE 6 is just ohhh man really screwed up. If I make a mistake...I'm done for. I feel too stupid. I can't do system restores either, Windows renames just about every file I own upon completion of the restore...that's a mess and half. So maybe I'd just better start over. I am going to download and a keep a copy of nlite, from what little I've read...it handles lots of things I really don't need or want or use on my computer. Instant Messenger being just one of the space and power gobbling programs I didn't ask for. nLite is very good idea and a great program, especially in the face of Microsofts often immovable position they have concerning some of their software. 1. Restart your computer. 2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. 3. Select the option for Last known good configuration using the arrow keys. 4. Then press enter on your keyboard.

I'm not an expert (I don't work in internet security), but for online banking. I think it's more a question of your browser than which version a Win user uses. I could be wrong. You should have a number of defenses working for you: 1) The data communicated between you and your bank is encrypted (on your side) by your browser. Which browser you use seems to matter, they're not all equally secure. Further, the communication follows certain protocols designed to provide a measure of security. It's not absolutely secure (there are still means and avenues of attack), but read on. 2)Your internet connection matters. Best not to do financial transactions on a public computer or an unencrypted public wifi. 3) As always, a current and effective anti-virus program helps prevent intrusions and malware. If all else fails, to my knowledge banks absorb customer losses from fraudulent acts. This is nothing new, people lose checkbooks and some crooks try to fake checks all the time. I'm not saying there are no chances you'd be inconvenienced, but I think anyone's risk of loss is close to nil. I'm an anti-paranoid. There's risk in all daily activities, I refuse to worry or overly concern myself with them. Most risks of using the internet are easily avoided with simple tools and common sense. Beyond that, I never give them a second thought.

All's well that ends well. I thought v6.0 was the first version compliant with the federal anti-trust law suit agreement that IE could be removed sucessfully from Windows. Again dusting off an old brain cell or two, wasn't it at this time the creation of the Microsoft update site came into existence as an alternative to the on-board Windows update utility configured through IE? This of course being done so users could update Windows without being mandated to retain IE. DA

Go to start > run > regedit and

HKEY -LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0

Look in the right hand pane.
Should be set to 1 for blocking; zero to allow install.

So the right had pane would show

Name: DoNotAllowIE70

Type: REG_DWORD

Data: 0x00000001 (1)

I'm curious if you have tried it once before and it had caused problems ?

It adds so much more security that maybe Microsoft considers or classifies it a critical update now.

I haven't tried it, in part because of the problems people here have reported. My computer works fine as it is (most of the time) and I don't have the skills to fix things that go wrong.

I bet its been fixt up pretty good by now. One of my kids just installed it 2 days ago. Seems to funcion properly.

Actually I was on the way over to block the IE 7. Missed by a couple hours. Can't see it was a big deal. Takes getting used to - maybe a day.

If you want to get rid of IE7, just go to Control Panel> Add/Delte and Delete Internet Explorer 7. It will automatically revert you to a newer version of IE6

I should also mention, that you have to take your computer off of Auto Update or it will undoubtedly download again

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'll tackle this next week. And Genes, I leave the auto-update on because it really is very convenient. I'm not sure this problem had anything to do with that because they have been begging me to download IE7 for months--but they never did it without my permission before. I still have not installed it or decided to. Just don't want any headaches I can't fix.

I have never had problems with it. I have it on 3 machines, one is 6 yrs old. I rarely use it, but when I do, it is fine. You could try it and uninstall it if you have a problem.
