IE 7 downloaded without my permission

My computer just downloaded IE7 without my clicking on anything. I've had them asking me to install this for months but I don't want it. It's downloaded but not installed. How do I un-download it?

My computer is set to automatically install critical updates but IE7 has remained in the recommended column and has not automatically installed. I am really annoyed and don't want the headaches that go with this.

I have a Dell 8300, Windows XP SP2, high-speed broadband, cable.

I received IE 7.0 the same way. The only differece is I installed it. After it caused me problems with my HP 3-1 and
my exterior hard drive, I right clicked it - properties -
Find Target - Select all - Delete.
I no longer get it on my updates.

You could try just deleting the IE 7.0 exe
Maybe it won't try to download any more.
Or you could move it to the unused desktop shortcuts.

A WORD, All the above opinions are each valid in their own special way. I like what Lisa wrote,as I was thinking thoughts along those lines myself. The words,'much to do about nothing' come to mind. Yes,they were very impolite to use the photo,and more so now,as they seem to imply its their plant in the latest ad.[perhaps to keep out of trouble with their image hoster ?] But one thing nags me, how could they contact Stephania for permission if they had no e-mail address at the time of their original posting? (he later posted one tho). And to give credit to Stephania some how,would be awkward for them,saying to the public,'thats not our plant but,yours might look like that some day'. But most of all,I feel this puts a lot of undue pressure on Stephania,to 'continue the arguement',when he has already made his own feelings known in his posts dated July 18th and July 20th. If this were happening to me,I'd feel a little uneasy. He has all the well researched information to decide what to do. I suggest we leave it to him now. Motive SB.exe Apparently that is usually program provided by an isp to help set up your connection and for trouble shooting problems with them. You absolutely dont need it,,, you can always install it later if you should. If you have some ISP Support software in your Add/Remove programs you might need to uninstall it. If not there remove Motive something from the start up or run list.

O, There are sites available which support the FF condemnation as well as those that cheer its serviceability. As I shared with Thirdfrt on the other thread, "Go ahead and use FF. The ratings are all about who you read, and what yardstick they use. It's like putting two lawyers in a telephone booth. They can't agree on whose going to dial." casi you should always have at least one extra browser on any pc, that way if IE should crash or not work you would be able to use the other one to get online and get help. You can have as many browsers as you want it is just one more program you add to your pc. Firefox is what I use as do many others but Chrome and Opera are popular. I do not use IE at all except when I have to use it for MS updates. To use another browser on your pc you just download it, let it install, then when you want to go online you just click on the icon for that browser instead of the one for IE it is that simple. Plus firefox and most others will ask you during install if you want to import your settings and bookmarks from IE you say yes and your new browser will have everything IE had all set up for you. Whether anyone uses IE or not you should always update to the latest version for your version of windows for security reasons. However if you have XP you would not be able to use IE9 it is for Vista and above, and should not be offered in updates for those with XP

Go to start > run > regedit and

HKEY -LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0

Look in the right hand pane.
Should be set to 1 for blocking; zero to allow install.

So the right had pane would show

Name: DoNotAllowIE70

Type: REG_DWORD

Data: 0x00000001 (1)

I'm curious if you have tried it once before and it had caused problems ?

It adds so much more security that maybe Microsoft considers or classifies it a critical update now.

I haven't tried it, in part because of the problems people here have reported. My computer works fine as it is (most of the time) and I don't have the skills to fix things that go wrong.

I bet its been fixt up pretty good by now. One of my kids just installed it 2 days ago. Seems to funcion properly.

Actually I was on the way over to block the IE 7. Missed by a couple hours. Can't see it was a big deal. Takes getting used to - maybe a day.

If you want to get rid of IE7, just go to Control Panel> Add/Delte and Delete Internet Explorer 7. It will automatically revert you to a newer version of IE6

I should also mention, that you have to take your computer off of Auto Update or it will undoubtedly download again

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'll tackle this next week. And Genes, I leave the auto-update on because it really is very convenient. I'm not sure this problem had anything to do with that because they have been begging me to download IE7 for months--but they never did it without my permission before. I still have not installed it or decided to. Just don't want any headaches I can't fix.

I have never had problems with it. I have it on 3 machines, one is 6 yrs old. I rarely use it, but when I do, it is fine. You could try it and uninstall it if you have a problem.
