My favporites were all there from before and the new ones go in just fine...so Im no help!!! Sorry!!!

Hey, this is just my $.02 worth, but, do yourself a favor and GET RID OF IEany version!!! But, if it makes you feel better, please feel free to disagree no matter how wrong that makes you....Rather long winded... my weekly rant I suppose.....

You could always get a good browser.........

Being a real search and find and internet freak I pretty much try to stay on top of tools and technologies that allow me to stay on-line without issues 24/7/365 with as little effort and as few issues as possible, and I have tried about all of the currently available browsers and mail and calender/contact programs..... I currently am running Opera, FireFox, Conqueror, and Lynx.....Opera currently has the best of the bookmarking regimens too, IMNSHO

IE7 has got to be the worst of the "modern" browsers....It is even worse than that MacOSX browser that my son likes so much, but that I cannot stand to use.

MS says IE7 it isn't available for Linux users/systems... but there are several available hacks that allow its' installation and use.... but after DL'ing and installing it it was such a dissappointment (so dissappointing is it that deleting it is actually a semi-religeous experience)....I guess though that those used to using IE6 and the usual stuff from MS may think of IE7 as somehow new/modern/current.... Mac and Linux users I would venture would not tend to see it as so though.

Get a good browser, a secure mail program, and a built to be secure OS and forget about IE7 and XP, and never worry about OS & online issues again...

LOL...Then again there is alway "Vista".... Which MS's Alpin said he would entrust his unhardened/unprotected system to his 7 year old and never worry about security....That story didn't last very long... less than 24 hours and his story had suddenly become somewhat different tale....

Oh yeah, and don't forget that you are gonna get to pay just $199.99 for a stripped and so basic that it may not be usable OS that will require you to spend even more money (to get a usable "Vista" os), and that expense after you get to either buy a new quite overly powerful machine for almost any home/individual oriented purpose just so you can run the OS. Or, spend a whole lot of money to upgrade what you already have....But you better upgrade first, just in case you go over MS's latest iteration of what constitutes a new system or an old system that will require a new license.... Elsewise, MS will be shutting down most of your system at will, disabling your software, and kicking you offline after 1 hour all because MS thinks you did something that you shouldn't have.... You agree to letting them do that at will when you click "I Agree"

And to those MS "defenders" out there.... Two weeks and it's ONE YEAR ONLINE 24/7/365 running 3 and 4 browsers with as many as 23 windows and 67 tabs open and running all at the same times and only off-line twice for a total of less than 6 hours, once for thunderstorms and once for rebooting to fix what my son did and to update my OS/kernal. Oh yeah..... and I don't run ANY "security software" no scanners, no trackers, no filters, no nothing...EVER!!! It would be 23 months continuosly online, but, this is a "new" machine that relaced the one that was online from just before XMas 2004 until just before Thanksgiving 2005. Y'all be sure to let me know as soon as y'all have MS box that can do 2 weeks online24/7 and remain running w/o issue, and that using all the "security" software you can find and buy too....LOL, as if that'll ever happen....

Amy, no problems with retaining Favs or adding new after downloading IE7 here either....XP SP2

Maybe you could go to Control Panel/ Add or Remove, and remove IE 7, then reinstall again.

I messed with a computer where the favorites buttons were basicly dead. Some of the spyware protection programs change permissions of some registry keys.

Then along comes the new browser update.. when IE7 installs it suddenly gets permission denied on those keys that your spyware is blocking. Which probably wouldnt happen on very many computers had those resident spyware programs been turned off before the IE7 install.

Same deal with ZoneAlarm & IE7 installs. Hopefully ZA fixed their major snafu by now.

Are you saying if one installs ZoneAlarm, the latest version, on an XP that Bookmarks/Favoriates may have to all be re-established (typed in) to get them on the "good guy" list with ZA?

I'm thinking install ZA to replace XP Home's FW. IE7 is already installed, but as I don't use it much I haven't looked at the status of Favoriates. Firefox bookmarks that I've accessed all work, but again I have yet to install ZA's FW.

Installing ZoneAlarm should not create any favorite issues if IE7 is already installed and working properly.

Personally I might think it would be a good idea to put off installing a fresh ZoneAlarm right now - until the later part of this week anyhow to give windows updates a clean shot, just in case.

Rita" How untrue that statement is, as much as and as well as the MSWin IE/XP FUD works (you bought the FUD after all, eh), it just ain't so....And if you do it right, and use the right software package to do it, removing BOTH OutLook and IE is a simple and very effective way of making your PC faster, stabler, and w/o IE-OL, more secure too..... And it'll have a smaller footprint and memory requirements, and can be set up as you, not Steve Ballmer, wants it to be.

Or you can do the delete "manually" too, but it's (to me anyway) a royal pain in the arse....Instructions for doing it right are in abundance....

I ran "it" for on my last (well, it was really the S.O.'s PC, but I grew weary of having to fix something every, well very often.) MSWin PC, and installed it for a friends daughter (and installed the software that she PURCHASED not stole) on a fPC just a few weeks ago.

It is for MSWindows software that IS well worth the money....

It is my experience that one must have IE to get Windows Updates (uses ActiveX) as do some support sites such as Panda.

Did I overlook at how one makes MS work with Firefox, or Panda to do the same? I may have, sorry if the answer was in the recommendations to remove IE and Outlook, and run faster. For my part I use Outlook 2002 (Industrial strength) and can say it offers a lot more than Thunderbird (for example) which I use for my personal email.

Mike, thanks for the caution on waiting for IE7 to settle down, I do plan on keepting it on all, save my one W98SE which it isn't compatible with, good old MS, for the above reasons. I'll hold off on installing ZoneAlarm.

Now that I think about it, my IE6 didn't keep any bookmarks either. It used to but at some point it lost them without my even noticing because we hardly ever use IE. We use Netscape all the time. I think when my husband is logged in he has bookmarks in IE but for some reason I don't.

Would that have affected IE7's favorites when I installed it? I don't think re-installing it would help but I can try anyway.

Update: I uninstalled 7 and reinstalled 6 and still have the same problem. The troubleshooter was no help at all (big surprise). For the record, I rarely use IE but I STILL WANT to figure out this problem, because it should not be happening.

~~Bump~~ still am unable to use the IE Favorites functions at all. Very annoying how IE places a "Links" folder on my desktop each time I open IE.

I read on one site today that if you created different login users on Windows XP, that this could create a favorites "missing" problem--? but they didn't say how to fix.

Each time I open IE, it puts a "Links" folder on my desktop, which I have to put in the trashbin every time I'm done using IE. The "add to favorites" function still does nothing, and the favorites folder still contains nothing. When my husband is logged in, on the other hand, his IE DOES contain his favorites and he does not have these issues. I have to use IE when on certain bill-paying sites (such as Columbia Gas) because those sites don't work properly in other browsers.

I can't believe you are still having these issues. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? I downloaded IE7 when it was first released and had no problems. All my favorites (not many) carried over. Did you try Googling the problem to see if there's a fix somewhere?

I think I'd uninstall and try over.

Yes already tried that. No favorites carried over with mine because IE 6 favorites function was messed up too, from what I remember. Even when I got rid of 7 and reinstalled 6 I still couldn't use favorites functions.

All I can figure is it has to do with my Windows logon user account. Because hubby has no issues with IE when he's logged on. We are both set as administratives with the same settings.

Have you tried creating a new user account yet? I would try that first, giving the new account administrator privileges, then verify that the account has a functioning favorites list before trying to copy favorites into it. If it is allowing you to add favorites, then go into Windows Explorer, find hubby's favorites list, mass copy them all and paste into your new account's favorites list. As far as the Links on the tool bar, just click on View--->Tool bars and remove the check from Links. Restart IE and you should not see the Links folder anymore on your Tool bar.
