Changing laptop screen brightness

Geez, it's hurting my eyes and has been for awhile. I know there's a way to dim the screen but I can't find it in Vista. I checked Control Panel, but don't see anything there.

Help. And thanks in advance.

Most monitors have buttons on the front where you can set the brightness and adjust other functions of the monitor.

Holf down "Fn" (function...usually in a different color on keyboard) key and use the up & down arrows.

I had a Dell Lattitude laptop for a while that had an S video output. I hooked it up to the TV. I had to find and install the correct drivers for it to work. Now we use my wife's computer. It has an S video output. Also had to find and install the correct drivers for it. But now we can download TV shows and watch them on TV. The laptop used a stretch function to just extend the desktop onto the TV screen. The desktop computer can only output to either the monitor or to the TV screen. Not both. I actually like it this way better. All of this is setup in Display properties. Pooh Bear

Its also quite possible that the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) (video chip) is starting to malfunction which will necessitate a systemboard replacement as the chips are not readily replaceable as a single unit

Yes, that is a good video for resolving such an issue....with one major exception. When a person is going to work on a computer, they would be wise to turn the computer off before doing anything to the computer. If it is a desktop, turn it off and then unplug from the wall outlet before making a repair. If it is a laptop, turn it off and remove the battery. When repairs are completed on the desktop, plug back into the wall outlet and then turn the computer on. When repairs are completed on the laptop, re-install the battery and then turn the computer back on. For some people this may seem like elementary information, but for others this information is not known. I would say that if that young man in the video works on his computer enough times with the power on, he will probably experience ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) and will be headed to the store to purchase a new motherboard.

One of the best ways I have found to combat this, especially with a laptop, is to wear a pair of those skintight latex gloves that one can get by the boxful/drugstore...futher, when removing modules such as memory or mini pci cards, grasp then between to fingers on the edge and keep fingers off of the face and back where the electronic components are..stay away from carpeted areas and use eg kitchen table Here is a link that might be useful: ESD-Electro static discharge

I GOOGED " Laptop screen Brightness" and one of the forums there spoke of using the "Fn" key. Checked my laptop keys and sure enough it was there. Learn something new everyday.

Toshiba Fn plus the up/down keys adjusts system volume sound levels.
Fn plus function keys F5&F6 has little pictures of suns on them here and does the display brightness.
But I think to make it the light level stick you have to use the Control Panel 'Power Options'
... at least on my Toshiba is the way it seems to work.

My HP has the little suns on f7 and f8, so I guess that, with the fn key adjusts the brightness. Seems every manufacturer does it a little differently.
