Floppy laptop screen

My laptop screen is becoming loose, when it is bent just a touch too far backwards it folds back all the way. Is there a fix for this? I don't see any way to get in to tighten it up.

It is a Dell Latitude D610.

Yes, that is a good video for resolving such an issue....with one major exception. When a person is going to work on a computer, they would be wise to turn the computer off before doing anything to the computer. If it is a desktop, turn it off and then unplug from the wall outlet before making a repair. If it is a laptop, turn it off and remove the battery. When repairs are completed on the desktop, plug back into the wall outlet and then turn the computer on. When repairs are completed on the laptop, re-install the battery and then turn the computer back on. For some people this may seem like elementary information, but for others this information is not known. I would say that if that young man in the video works on his computer enough times with the power on, he will probably experience ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) and will be headed to the store to purchase a new motherboard.

Its also quite possible that the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) (video chip) is starting to malfunction which will necessitate a systemboard replacement as the chips are not readily replaceable as a single unit

One of the best ways I have found to combat this, especially with a laptop, is to wear a pair of those skintight latex gloves that one can get by the boxful/drugstore...futher, when removing modules such as memory or mini pci cards, grasp then between to fingers on the edge and keep fingers off of the face and back where the electronic components are..stay away from carpeted areas and use eg kitchen table Here is a link that might be useful: ESD-Electro static discharge

Hi Genes, thanks so much for your reply. No, haven't hooked it up to another monitor, and if truth be told, I do have another laptop on the way. This one is 4 years old. I'm also the gal who has the problem of the connection switching from electric to battery while connected----so I'm limping along and just waiting for my new one to arrive. Guess I was just hoping there would be some magic button I could push to fix this latest problem. That's all right I'll make it. Thanks again for your help. BarbB

Since HDMI uses digital RGB or YUV signals over three separate conductors to carry the video information, a break in one of those conductors within the HDMI cable can cause problems like you describe. First thing is to try another HDMI cable. If the problem is still there, do you have another laptop, or another HDMI source, to try on your display using the original cable? Do you have another display with HDMI input that your can connect your laptop to, again using the original cable? The picture settings menus usually only affect the individual input that you have set them to. I'd say chances are the cable since it sounds like it gets a little more flexing from connecting/disconnecting to your laptop.

Thank you both so much, I really appreciate the advice about the battery. I wouldn't have thought to remove that, but I would have unplugged it first.

If you do anything on a laptop, ie change memory etc, anything involving opening the bottom panel..like blowing out the dustbunnies with canned air..always, always, unplug and remove the battery

Batteries in laptops are dangerous to humans too. They start to short, some become like little out of control nuclear reactors.

Well, it sort of worked, the very left screw I was unable to get to, a peg was in the way, but it did help a little.
