Deck mount handheld sprayer in shower/tub alcove?

Ok, so we are in the planning stages of our hall bathroom.

The bathroom will have an alcove tub/shower combo, and I am planning on installing a half glass shower door on hinges.

I want to install a handheld sprayer (we currently don't have one). My dear husband HATES the look of the handheld sprayer hoses dangling down and he really doesn't want to install one. Of course he isn't the one who cleans the bathroom and has no clue how much of a PITA it is to take a cup of water and splash it against the walls to clean the tub/shower.

He asked me if the hose can be recessed in the wall (which I have never seen done and correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you can do) or if you can have it as a deck mount?

I saw a couple of pictures of deck mounted sprayers in an alcove shower/tub application on Houzz (see attached picture).

Any concerns or issues with doing this sort of application? My obvious concern is that the sprayer has a tight seal so that water isn't leaking in.

No experience, but I would think you'd want an access panel to get to the hose so that it can be changed out if needed. The image you show looks great. I would never again have a shower/tub without some form of sprayer option for the same reason you mentioned. But I always used a wash tub, filled it, and threw the water at the walls :) What a PIA! The access panel could be incorporated in the wood surround of the drop in tub.

Have you shown him lots of photos of beautiful, high-end handheld shower heads? I just can't imagine how some sort of recess could improve the look. It seems like an area to trap mildew and gunk.

We have both a handheld in the shower and a deck-mount on the tub. The deck-mount hoses are not quite long enough to be useful for cleaning a shower. You would be pointing it straight up--not a huge improvement over the cup/splashing method we have all HATED living with, I'm afraid. They are nice for rinsing your hair when you're in the tub, and rinsing the tub.

Well, phooey. I taped it out in the bathroom with blue tape last night and it looked like it would fit, but with too many nos, I'm back to the drawing board. Interesting thought, Vix. Right now we don't actually have a toilet room, so much as a separate toilet "area" (there's no door, and the closet takes up too much room to add a door), but it's on my agenda to create one. In our house, it's very necessary. I generally use that bathroom to try to FIND privacy, only to have 3 people (and sometimes the dog) follow me into the bathroom. I'm looking forward to having a door that locks and a fan so that I don't have two little people handing me the TP and asking whether I'm doing number 1 or 2 (oh, and the 1 year old likes to flush while I'm ON the pot; so I've got my own special cold water washlet), while DH decides that he absolutely has to shave and brush his teeth at that exact moment. Now if I take a hike to the guest bath on the other side of the house, all three just follow me AGAIN. Sometimes when I have insisted on locking the door in the guest bath (no way to do that with our LOUVERED -- why??? -- pocket door in the master), my one year old plopped down prostrate outside the door and cried until I open the door. For my W/C, I want to put in a LOUD fan; no whisper quiet for me. Maybe I'll even add a radio. :) The way I'm seeing it, I can either get rid of the long vanity altogether and live with a fairly small vanity, plus a tub and shower, I can skip the tub and live with the kids' bathroom on the third level as the only room with a tub, or we can bump out that weird corner jog, which would give us an additional 49'' X 27'' space -- enough to fit a 5X3 tub, 5X3 shower and keep the two vanities. But that sounds very expensive and will require carefully removing and replacing the siding to match the existing. DH's response to all this was "why do we need a tub?"

agree with ravencajun that there are some really nice handhelds out there that rival or even beat a basic fixed head, plus their utility for cleaning is critical to me. Another option is to place the handheld on a slide bar so you can adjust to different heights. This is especially nice for kids or folks with very different heights. Unless you have a wide tub, I would be inclined to go with a really nice handheld on a bar and the tub spout, otherwise as linelle pointed out it will get busy with so many fixtures. Plus you will need additional diverter valves and trim for extra fixtures and you may decide that money might be better spent on upgrading the shower head (or some other part of your redo) We went all out in ours, but it is a good sized shower only - but you can see what it looks like in the picture below with two fixtures on one wall. The WetStyle f/s tub has a removable tray that sits across the tub. I like numberjunkie's idea of a shelf or ledge behind the tub for placing items and also like the idea of having the shower wall next to the tub tiled half-way up to have a space for installing a grab bar. WetStyle has an optional shelf that surrounds the tub, but I think it would make it more challenging to get in and out of the tub - would need to hop over the shelf. The drop-in tub I was initially considering was 72"x42" but that would likely not fit, so would need to be 72"x36". This weekend I looked at an open house (new construction) in my area that had a drop-in tub with a narrow space for the deck surround (see attached photo). The deck was tiled on the top and on the apron with white subway tile. I noticed that with the narrow deck space (about 2") and the tub overhang, it would be awkward to sit on the edge of the tub and swing my legs in or out of the tub. Wiithout space for a deck that is wide enough to comfortably sit on, ease of entry or exit may come down to depth of the tub and options for placement of grab bars. The Wetstyle tub is 22" deep; the drop-in tubs are generally deeper, more like 26"

I have had a bathtub spout with the handheld shower above it. You can also simply replace a regular shower head with the hand held which has the flexible jointed metal water hose (or what ever they are called). The big box stores carry them. Since you don't have a shower over head, you can only get a deck mount, which I also had. It sat next to the roman tub spout and the metal hose sat behind the false front. As an alternative, go to Wal-Mart and buy the blue & white scrubber on the extendable handle for reaching the far sides of the tub. They also sell replacement heads. Sold by the mops? I use this in my roman tub. Works great, easy, cheap.

enduring - yes we will have an access panel because we will have an air bathtub (at least that is the current plan).

shanghaimom - Yes, DH has seen plenty of pictures of nice handheld showerheads, and we actually just purchased one for our masterbath. But he still doesn't like them and this bathroom will have marble walls (master is white subway) and I think he doesn't want anything hanging in front of the marble.

As for the hose length. I was looking at Newport Brass last night and you can purchase the hose, handheld and mount type (deck, bar, holder) all separately. The hose length is the same no matter what mounting method - 59" which seems long enough to me....our shower/tub is only 60"x30" so i think we will be fine.

So I take it, it can be done and there shouldn't be any issues???

The handheld deck-mounts are not seated "tightly" but should be plenty tight enough to avoid water leaking in as long as it doesn't get accidentally bumped. When it is sitting squarely in it's spot, no water will leak in, at least on ours.

That hose sounds plenty long for rinsing the walls.

Just in time for my remodel. I love the idea of installing the handheld in an alcove.

Another idea I got off of one of the plumbing forums for Roman faucet handhelds in order to service the hose more easily since most problems with Roman faucets are in the handheld hose- install a plumbing flexible hose directly to the rough in - one that will reach past the deck opening. And then attach the sprayer hose to that. This makes it such to where you don't have to get to the Roman faucet rough to replace the hose.

We have a Moen deck mounted hand-held sprayer. The hose is concealed inside the frame work around the tub. We don't ever see it until we pull the sprayer out. When done, the hose retreats back.

I am trying to replace my handheld deck mounted sprayer as we broke the spray head off. My problem is that I can't find a replacement that will fit through the hardware that is mounted on the tub deck. The connector on the one end doesn't come off and is too large to feed through the deck hardware. Not sure what to do?

Piscesgirl, where you able to get a deck mounted sprayer and a regular shower head for a alcove bathtub shower? I’m trying to remodel our hall bath and also don’t want to see a dangling long cord for the handheld part of the sprayer but don’t know how to get a set that also works for a tub.

piscesgirl, I wonder if you recall where you found that photo. Was that an "after" photo of a gardenweb/houzz member? I'd love to know how they set that up, what hardware they used. I need to do the same thing! I'm having a hard time finding a long-enough tub spout with built in diverter to make it work.
