Secunia Results - do I need to update Safari

Hi. I just got Secunia results, suggesting I update Adobe flash player in 2 places (which I did). It also said I should update Safari. I downloaded it - but before I install it, I want to check whether I actually need it.

But first - Dell, Windows XP, Firefox browser (rarely IE).

I am not quite sure what Safari is, but I think it's a browser. I don't think I ever use it - but I'm not sure. I do use Itunes. Does that mean I need Safari? I'm not sure if Safari is on my computer bc. it came pre-installed when I got the computer a little over a year ago. Or perhaps it came with Itunes? Or maybe it's something else and I use/need it without realizing I'm using it.

While I'm at it - this didn't come up on Secunia results, but periodically I get a pop-up window telling me that newer versions of various Apple softer are available for download. I have no idea if I need these things bc. I use itunes - or it's just Apple's attempt to get me to use more of their software. One that comes up is for Bonjour. Anyone know what "Bonjour" is - and whether I should get it. The other is for Quicktime - which I think I need for Itunes. Offhand, I cannot remember the third one - perhaps it was Safari.

if you do not use safari which is an apple browser then get rid of it, likely it was on some other update you did from apple that it had safari checked and you missed un checking it in the install process they pull that often with itunes and safari.

generally if secunia tells you there are newer updates they are good to do for security reasons.
If you have the programs on your pc then you should do the updates because vulnerabilities can be found in any kind of program. There is a big one right now in Adobe which does not yet have a patch out to fix it but they will hopefully have one soon, there are updates now for flash so those should be done for all browsers.
I just did an update for quicktime today in fact.

Everyone really needs to be extremely cautious of PDF files right now till this adobe patch comes out, I would not open any in the browser but instead download to disc and scan them well prior to opening them.

If you do not remove Safari as RC suggests then at least remove the entry in your startup so you are not pestered like this. Also I would remove Quicktime, iTunes and probably Bonjour from your startup, I feel it is not necessary for these to be running in the background all the time.

secunia mostly focuses on security related updates I would not expect it to show you that things like belarc had an update or ccleaner etc. For that adobe update I would just go right to the adobe reader program on the pc open the program and hit the update button in the program and let it look for the update. I personally only use the secunia online scan so I can not tell you what the installed version does. Right now there are about a dozen or so of these update scanners that I have seen pop up, I have no idea if they are good or safe or not. I am always very cautious with programs like that and especially one like you encountered that did a scan on your pc with out express consent from you that is sketchy behavior. Just because the wot scores are good is not necessarily an indicator, if the program is very new the website possibly has not been up long enough to have ratings. Secunia is an antivirus company a security company that has been around a long time, that is why I trust the online scanner there. We use and recommend it on the help forums I am on all the time. It is totally up to you what you want to use. By now I think everyone should know that if there are adobe updates do them asap, if there are java updates so them asap, if there are flash updates do them asap, those should be known since we have said over and over some of the worst infections right now are coming through those so keep them updated. You can also subscribe to one of the many help forums that provide all the info on what updates are being issued on what date. Thanks Terry and Ravencajun. I have some follow-up questions. - for the flash update page, where do I find that page? is it the link I get with secunia scan results? If I go to that link (the secunia results are on my firefox browser now), can I also get the IE and AOL versions there (and will they install in the proper place) - OR - do I have to go through each browser to the update page and download the flash update from within each browser? - For the insecure older versions of files located in the dell setup files c:\i386 - can I delete them? they may not be doing any harm, but if I don't need them, I'd rather get rid of them. that way when I do this scan in the future, I won't get results that show insecure files - or maybe if I do this way in the future and I forget what that location means, it will be nice to not have to deal with it. - do I need all 4 versions of Java version 6, update 7 - for the flashplayer in AOL software, it is only suggesting updating to version 6.0.88.0 or 9.0.47.0 (and this 9.0.47.0 was found to be insecure in it's other locations). Could it be that AOL needs an earlier version of flash? perhaps the newer version 9.0.124.0 isn't compatible with AOL? Thanks. Lynn.

I think at this time I would block it and hold off to see if maybe it gets fixed, I would use extreme caution in doing the update and read this ongoing blog about some of the results that can occur including losing all address book contacts. KB2434419 Windows Live Essentials - disastrous consequences I would do lots of research on google about that kb.

the first ones you mentioned yes they get installed when you do updates of those programs like java. and MS is guilty of the .Net one you can google that and find some info there. I have open it online use it on occasion but if you do not use it then you can remove. Maybe if you go to the page for it you will remember it's benefits and why you got it. If you have removed Adobe Acrobat Reader you can remove Air also from what I remember. I think it is needed for some types of applications to function properly, similar to flash. If an app you use needs it you will probably get a pop up saying it is needed. you can have more than one pdf reader but you would need to set which is default to be used, or yes you can remove Adobe Acrobat reader I have removed it from all of mine and use only pdf xchange. IE8 is now a much more ready to use than it was early on so sure you can update it and it is more secure. Internet Explorer 8: Worldwide sites
