I just went thru this exact (almost) procedure, getting my new Vista desktop to network with our Win xp computer with printer. Not so easy, but here are the instructions which work: 1. To set up the house network, on the Vista computer: Start-Control Panel-System and Maintaint.- system-computer name,domain,workgroup settings area on the screen, hit the "change settings" button, then system properties-computer name tab-change computer name/domain changes-in Workgroup type your home network's name-OK. Then to set up the printer, a huge pain, but doable: On the Vista computer: Start-Control Panel-add printer-add Local Printer (I know it's on a network, but this is the way to do it)-create a new port-default is "local port",leave it-next you have to enter a port name, this is the tricky part, you have to type in the path to the printer manually, the path should look like: \\your exact host computer name\your exact printer's sharing name. That's it. To check for the exact host computer name, go to the host computer, my computer, and a screen will come up with it's official name, use it, case sensitive. For printer name, go to host computer, printers area thru the control panel, rt. click the printer and properties. A sharing tab will show, click it, the exact name for the shared printer will show, again use it case sensitive. The above took me all day when I got my new Vista, hope it helps.

Junita, Please comnsider easing into this. By your description, your new system is extremely powerful and has an abundance of available rsources. Could it be that your haste and concern in paring all your targets is a byproduct of your previous system? I personally tended to act that way when I purchased the new one. I haven't read any reports of great concern with the Vista firewall. It is bi-directional and apparently works adequately. I left my Windows Defender enabled and update it regularly. Again from what I read it performs more than adequately. With a new quad core system resources and power are more than plentiful to run it in the background. I took Norton off the first day. I would have sworn that the topping was something like cream cheese sweetened and thinned with sour cream....but she says it was just whipped cream. Cheesecake Factory Pumpkin Cheesecake Bonnie Prep time: 30 minutes Serves: 10-12 Cooking time: 65-75 minutes Crust: 1½ cups graham cracker or ginger snaps (I like ½ of each) 5 T. butter, melted 1 T. sugar Filling: 3-8oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened 1 C. canned pumpkin 3 eggs ½ t. cinnamon ¼ t. nutmeg ¼ t. allspice Topping; 1 C. heavy cream ½ C. sugar 1 t. white vanilla ½ C. chopped pecans Mix crust ingredients together, just until coated and crumbly. Press onto the bottom and two-thirds of the way up the sides of an 8" spring form pan. Bake for 5 minutes at 350F. Set aside. Combine cheese, sugar and vanilla in large bowl, mix until smooth with an electric mixer. Add pumpkin, eggs, and spices and beat until smooth and creamy. Pour into the crust. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until the top turns a bit darker. Remove from oven and allow to come to room temperature, then refrigerate. Just before serving, whip the cream, sugar and white vanilla. After cake has thoroughly chilled, add the whipped cream topping and sprinkle nuts over the cream. Remove the pan sides and cut.

I wound up breaking down and buying the new Office but I wish I hadn't. I don't like the layout either but you can go for a "classic" look on that too. I use OpenOffice for a few things too. I like OpenOffice but it doesn't work well with complicated forms and things I made in Office. But I'd much prefer to use the open source items rather than give MS anything more than necessary. If you don't like Vista, what makes you think you'll like Windows7? From what I'm reading, it's nothing more than "Vista 2". They still have dreams of the subscription based Windows but can't get it working right. Surprised? Nor am I? I guess I figure that a new OS requires a new machine with double the ram and hard drive. I'm disappointed with the sidebar. Thought it could be convenient but it's very amateurish. The three things that I found somewhat useful were a month calendar, but it's JUST the calendar, no other functions, but it does show week numbers which I find useful. But I use Rainlender now. Far more features, better clarity, better program. Another is a basic timer, but 1time works just as well, if not better. And the other is the Weatherbug, but I find WeatherWatcher to be better with the icon temperature. So I shut off the sidebar altogether. I run a lot of browsers. I use Opera for general purposes, Kmeleon for email and for when I have trouble with a website. And Firefox is often used too. For various things. I do like a couple of the weather add-ons on FF and version 3 has improved on speed but it's still much slower than Opera or Kmeleon. But nothing like the Microsoft Bloated Beast! So I often sit with at least two browsers open at all times, sometimes three. And running several things in the background. One thing I noticed is the latest version of Opera doesn't seem as smooth as the last several revisions. They had new versions about every two weeks for a couple months. Not sure when they'll release v10 but I'm interested in seeing how that will be different. The problem is I do a lot of tweaking on things. I condense the toolbars and customize it, use one button for the main toolbar and have button shortcuts to programs. I don't suppose that will convert to v10 but I'll have to see. One thing I've found is there was a lot of talk about software not working on Vista. I just haven't found this to be true. It doesn't always load up easily, often you need to turn off UAC or something but I can't think of a program that doesn't work on here. PageMaker was one that was said no-way, no-how and they wouldn't even consider updating it. They said buy the new version for $1200! I don't use it very often but figured a $600 program should last a bit longer and I had nothing to lose to try it. Well it's working fine... now. Problem is, I can't find my FrontPage disks.... and I need to update some websites... (sigh)
