I just went thru this exact (almost) procedure, getting my new Vista desktop to network with our Win xp computer with printer. Not so easy, but here are the instructions which work: 1. To set up the house network, on the Vista computer: Start-Control Panel-System and Maintaint.- system-computer name,domain,workgroup settings area on the screen, hit the "change settings" button, then system properties-computer name tab-change computer name/domain changes-in Workgroup type your home network's name-OK. Then to set up the printer, a huge pain, but doable: On the Vista computer: Start-Control Panel-add printer-add Local Printer (I know it's on a network, but this is the way to do it)-create a new port-default is "local port",leave it-next you have to enter a port name, this is the tricky part, you have to type in the path to the printer manually, the path should look like: \\your exact host computer name\your exact printer's sharing name. That's it. To check for the exact host computer name, go to the host computer, my computer, and a screen will come up with it's official name, use it, case sensitive. For printer name, go to host computer, printers area thru the control panel, rt. click the printer and properties. A sharing tab will show, click it, the exact name for the shared printer will show, again use it case sensitive. The above took me all day when I got my new Vista, hope it helps.

deleting cookies does very little to speed up your computer and will require you to login manually to any sites you are a member of, and also will delete any site preferences stored in them. While it certainly hurts nothing, this can be a huge inconvenience. I manually delete cookies, saving the ones from the site i visit frequently. I do this about once every other month. deleting all files in system temp caches (not to be confused with temp internet cache) can be disasterous to software upgrading and removal if they store uninstall files in there. Some software packages use system temps for uninstall and update/upgrade information. It is best to manually clean house in system temp directories/folders and remove nothing for software you currently use. the best ways to make your computer run leaner and faster is to: clean and repair the system registry cut down on the un-needed programs and services that auto-start when you turn on windows defragment your hard drive virus scan to remove all malicious items spyware scan to remove all malicious items delete internet temp files

MS has a support article on it ... about 1 yr old. Gardenweb link at bottom. but it also says The ISATAP adapter encapsulates IPv6 packets by using an IPv4 header. This functionality enables the client to transport IPv6 traffic over an IPv4 infrastructure. ....... I'd probably try rebuilding the Tcp/Ip stack... Thanks everyone. I already did the Word update bc. I realized that my daughter would be continuing to bring work back and forth from school. I'm pleasantly surprised that an older version of Microsoft Word is update-able - without being asked to pay for an upgrade. Bob - thanks for explaining what that update is doing. Now I'll know what .docx documents are. I have an older Word myself and all the files are .doc - but it explains the trouble I've had in an organization where we send each other word documents - some must have the newer word and some the old. I will get the Windows Media Player 11. That's a program she uses. One of the reasons I asked here is bc. googling often gets me descriptions/info I don't understand. This is what I found on the update for root certificate: "This item updates the list of root certificates on your computer to the list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed." I have no idea what that means and whether I should get it. What I found when I googled Update for Windows XP (KB971513) sounded either scary (maybe it would mess up the computer's functioning) - or at least not clear as to it's value - so I'll skip it unless somebody hear knows differently.
