Got a Virus

I was surfing the net, and all of a sudden my AVG anti-virus informed me that I had picked up a virus. I clicked on 'heal'; but I got a msg stating 'failed action' (or something like that).

So, I ran a virus scan, and it detected JS/Downloader.Agent. I again clicked on 'heal' and I got the same 'failed action' msg. Then, I moved it to the Virus Vault.

1. Is the virus still active in the vault; and 2. Do I try to 'wipe it' or 'heal' at this point?

I got a Trojan Horse, or two, last week, and they were successfully healed (but are still in the Virus Vault, too).

Another question. I see the newest version of AVG is available for download; but I'm uncertain of what to do right now because of the virus.

Your computer is protected if the vault is in the vault.I would wipe the vault then download the new version, but I think the items will still be in the vault if you install the new version over the old if you are worried about wiping it.

Thank you for your reply. Actually, I'm not sure if I should be worried about wiping it... Is there a possibility of losing an important file (that the virus has attached itself to) - or something like that?

Or, is it ok to just delete them (which I think is wiping, right : ) )? I'd like to delete them, uninstall the avg 7.5 and install the 8. I'm unsure of what to do.

beverlyal - That's exactly what my tomato leave problems look like - grayish, twisted, mangled, deformed, half-formed, crispy leaves. Someone mentioned weed killer - that could be it, as although we don't use weedkiller, the tomatoes are planted in the border bed of a grassy area that the HOA sprays with weed surpresser (that's not the right word, but) in the Spring. The plants themselves are not wilting, so I don't think it's wilt. I will try to take a pix taken & posted (I'm a nerd, but not yet adept @ digital/uploads w/my own digital camera). And what beverlyal said is exactly what happened to us - one day we had gorgeous fast fast growing plants, and the next day (not literally but y'know, quickly) we had these deformed leaves - after a real humid 80 degree spell (w/cloudy humidity, but not thunderstorm break in the weather). Other nearby (w/in 20 yards) tomato plants - 2 in pots (18 gal container) and some in ground, just started showing signs of similarly deformed leaves. All the Best, Tree

Just because Norton couldn't stop a virus on your old computer doesn't necessarily mean that AVG will serve you better on your new machine. An anti-virus program is only as good as its virus definition files and the schedule on which it is updated and on which it scans your machine. I use McAfee, and as soon as McAfee releases an update, my machine downloads and installs it automatically. My machine undergoes a full scan daily; and all documents, e-mail, and e-mail attachments are scanned as soon as they are accessed. And, a search on the AVG site for MonoRonaDona resulted in no matches found.

I got a virus from a link on this discussion area. Non-stop pop-ups.

nightowl, are you using Firefox? I had a similar problem last year ... I would click on a heading in GW and it would open to a random site on another page, constant pop-ups, etc. I notified GW and although they did ask me to specify details, I don't believe anything was done on their end and the issues remained. I paid a service provided my my ISP that supposedly cleared my computer of malware, but still had the problem, and only when accessing GW. I ended up deleting Firefox and the problem went with it. I've been using Chrome since without issues. I also installed Malwarebytes and run it periodically.

If its a regular file that the virus attached to and AVG couldnt clean it, you need to find a new copy of that file anyhow.... so clear your virus vault... download the current version.

I'd look around to see if they have an uninstall program for the old version before installing the new.
But before I get carried away think that I'd certainly make sure the new version is FREE and see if it has any upgrade install instructions.

I've always wiped or deleted them and never missed anything later. If it's infected and can't be cleaned it's useless anyway. If it's in the vault it can't be used so are you missing anything important now? I delete them without worrying, but if you're unsure wait until someone else comes along to add their advice. They can't do any harm in the vault.

Ah - it seems I was getting ahead of myself. The avg 8 isn't free. So, I won't worry about that, then. Thanks for the heads up.

I understand now, then, that the file is no longer any good anyway since avg couldn't clean it, so I will delete it.

When you get a Virus in your computer that will not clean or fix. It is usually because it is in your System Restore folder. And the Virus scanner cannot remove it from that folder.The first step to clearing a virus is to ,,
1. Turn off your System Restore folder. It will ask you if you are sure you want to do that. Click yes.
2. Run your Virus scanner. It will remove the virus or Trojan. When done shut computer down.
3. Reboot computer. Then make certain to turn System Restore back on .
4. Run your Virus scanner again. You will see that the problem is gone.
I am certain the others who answered your posting may have forgotten to clue you into this step. Since that is the first thing that is always suggested in this Forum.
