New virus

I am on my new computer now, that DH just finished building--little sooner than we expected. I had Norton 360 on my old one, but got a virus called MonoRonaDona that come thru either on a attachment or something I down loaded. It is a Malwar virus and I contacted Norton, and for 99.95 the would fix it, but I declined and went to this new one. He is going to crash my old one, erase the hard drive and we are going to get rid of it.

Just be careful what you download Norton cannot stop it. I now have AVG

Just because Norton couldn't stop a virus on your old computer doesn't necessarily mean that AVG will serve you better on your new machine. An anti-virus program is only as good as its virus definition files and the schedule on which it is updated and on which it scans your machine.

I use McAfee, and as soon as McAfee releases an update, my machine downloads and installs it automatically. My machine undergoes a full scan daily; and all documents, e-mail, and e-mail attachments are scanned as soon as they are accessed.

And, a search on the AVG site for MonoRonaDona resulted in no matches found.

I too have AVG free and really like it.

There is a lot of Norton bashing at Computer Help.

all of the major antivirus programs need a special removal tool to fully remove them. They have to get heavily into the system and the registry and that is the part that is rarely all removed when doing a simple removal through add remove programs. I am not surprised in the least by what Geek Squad said which is why I would never let them work on any of my machines, they probably do not do any other removal other than add remove programs and if that leaves remnants that cause problems well then that just means the person has to bring it back again later for that and they get to pay more. Then usually their standard policy is to reformat the computer. This is a link to Corrine's blog with info on various removal tools for antivirus products. Antivirus Product Removal Tools I would not worry I would just get the free REVO uninstaller and use it. this is the forum thread that discusses the webroot removal tool which this guy finally got from them. Solved: Spy Sweeper has me by the throat as you can see he did try using the uninstaller that came with the program as well as add remove programs.

Windows live alerts and new virus?

for those that it did not happen to here is what happened, I had my hotmail opened in firefox as usual, suddenly it refreshed as it does to get new mail, when it refreshed the first 2 full pages of the inbox were completely filled with windows live alerts with the names of people in my address book or my msn messenger ( not sure which since I have some in both) each entry had that it was their birthday and the birthday was listed as January 1st. I did not open any of the entries, I was on my linux box, I hilighted all of them on page one and deleted them then did the same on page 2.After clearing those I went to my windows live calendar to see if anything there was messed up but it was exactly as it should be. very strange occurrence and hearing it happening to many people is quite strange If anyone spots reports of this or info about why it happened please post and give links or info. I am checking the security forums and not seeing anything much.

Not a fan of Norton. I use something called NOD that my computer guy recommended. That being said, I am still very careful about everything I open. I also use two different free adware programs. Once a week a full sweep is done and NOD does updates everytime they do something new. I have had days where updates were done 3 and 4 times.

I got viruses with McAffee....and I kept if updated daily.
Ended up with a new hard drive.
I am using AVG also.

Please read the link...it's not as bad as you think.
There's a link at the end to how to remove it.
It's a scare malware that tries to make you pay some exorbitant fee to fix.
