computer problems.. are they connected?

First here is what I know about my computer: windows XP Media center Edition AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+

2.21GHz 960MB of ram

Physical address extention Acer

300 GB harddrive

I am having several problems..

links are VERY slow to open..

cursor sometimes doesn't print word till almost finished typing...

Quite often I get this

every few minutes & then it freezes me for 30 seconds or more. This is very aggravating & can go on for hours.

Takes for ever to reboot.

All these started sometime ago when firefox updated it's browser.. each update seems to add a new problem or make what I have worse.

So far I have done a complete AFT clean.. what else can I try? BTW I use Thunderbird mail.

What version of AVG?

What version of Firefox? Click Help in the firefox browser, now click About Mozilla firefox tell us the version # listed.

It is version 3.6.2. Sorry I should have posted that.
One more thing..when the popup comes on there is no mail. It does does do the regular popup when there is mail. Thunderbird is version 2.00.24 (20100228)

I don't see an issue with AVG on 7. I do see an issue with McAfee see link. If you like AVG and are use to it then for sure consider it. Download it to the desktop and install it. If you restored to factory settings like you said McAfee should not be active, a perfect time to uninstall it. It should uninstall using programs and features, we don't even need to worry about that yet because no McAfee files are running yet. Note The McAfee removal tool is not removing some new versions of McAfee. "Enterprise Software Detected" please contact McAfee. Lets avoid that or it's off to Revo un installer. When you get home connect Ethernet cable to the laptop. Then try going to www.google.com. Only go there just see if Google opens. Let us know if you get this far and we can give you a direct link for AVG so you may install that. Then while McAfee is not active we can uninstall it as I mentioned. If you want I can look at a hijack log for you after.

Yes, it's quite possible to use a cell phone to connect your laptop to the Internet. It's called tethering. Now, your phone may not have that capability but many "smartphones" can. Unfortunately, it tends to be a bit expensive. You'll need to pay for voice service, a data plan, and typically an additional fee of $20+ per month for tethering. Connection speed can vary widely as well, depending on the quality of the connection wherever you are using the laptop. There are also standalone devices that allow a wireless connection as well. Typically the connect to the a USB port. All the major carriers offer them and they cost $75-$100 to buy and then $40+ per month in data fees. Again, as with using a cell phone to tether, connection speed can vary. If you have access to DSL or cable, you're probably better off going that route unless you need a mobile connection.

Just don't try doing this with a regular usb cable!! I prefer to use a usb flash thumb drive to move them if you are not networking them. I never cared much for the usb transfer cables.

Hi pkspigs, All I can find on the issue is "If your iPad is disabled, someone typed in the wrong passcode enough to disable it. Lets work on AVG problem first.

Only thing I could suggest is to uninstall AVG and reinstall it.

If you decide to. Use the uninstall tool below download the 32bit .exe and run it, that is double click it. This will remove all of AVG.

Then

Reinstall Free Avg from this link below:

Click where it says download AVG Free. Lets see if that works.

I forgot to put AVG version in(been a rough morning)
It is version 8.5.437.
I went in & unchecked a couple of notification things. I can always check them back if need be. I'll let U know what happens.

you know since you said it happened when firefox updated you might try running firefox safemode which runs it without the add ons and see if maybe one of them is conflicting. STart> mozilla> firefox safe mode. See if that makes any difference so you can at least rule out the add ons.

I checked to see what add-ons I have.. I only have WOT, the dictionary, Java concole & Adblock plus. I disabled WOT & so far it seems to be running better. I would hate to be without WOT.

I also went into AVG & unchecked "display notification window while E-mail is being scanned" also unchecked "display E-mail scanner related tray notifications"
If these need to be checked I can always redo that. So far I have only had actual E-mail notifications.
I will reinstall as a last resort.
