computer making clicking noises

My computer is making clicking noises when you first turn it on. When it goes into windows xp, the clicking stops. But when you are in windows and you click to open a program, it opens the program multiple times. Can be as many as 40-50 times. Everything becomes very erratic and sometimes I can't even click to restart or shut down the computer. I thought it was a hard drive problem but I have totally disconnected the hard drive and I can still hear the clicking noises when I reboot. I thought it was the floppy drive and did the same to it and the clicking is still there when you reboot. I just can't seem to isolate the clicking noise. Any ideas?

Possibly, and no guarantee, you might be looking at a H/D failure. Had it happen to me once. The intermittent clicking followed in time by a complete failure. Until you know for sure one way or the other it would be wise to backup all important data, documents, pictures and music to name a few.

agree with damccoy's suggested possibility. Back up everything at once, then proceed with diagnosis.

Mine is Suntouch, too. I'm still getting used to the sound. It used to wake me up a lot (adjacent room),but I no longer hear it all night. I wasn't expecting it, though.

Using a new browser (Firefox) is a similar experience to clearing cookies and cache in the old browser, to the extent that your history, sign-ons, site preferences, are gone and some things need to be re-entered. Other than cached pages that could speed up your experience with a slow internet connection, I'm aware of nothing else of "value" that's there to save. You can clean up in Internet Explorer by clicking on Tools, Clear Browsing History. If it hasn't been done in some time, get it started and give it some number of minutes to finish. You'll see ongoing disk activity, that's normal. Or, you can just leave it as is and use Firefox. If your hard drive has plenty of space, there's perhaps nothing gained from cleaning up browser debris you no longer use.

Would it be a DCS by any chance? Mine is and has had the problem before. Replaced one igniter and now after 6 months the darn thing is at it again. Mine is 5 years old. Mine never clicks until I light one of the burners.

Last Friday you started this thread about your computer not responding. Genes suggested more info would be a great help and I made a couple of suggestions including a site with fixes listed for what may be your problem. What happened? No point going further until we can understand what you did and if anything worked. You started this thread on Sunday, I asked how old the computer was - no answer. I suggested inserting a CD or DVD to eliminate that as the issue perhaps. What happened? Ravencajun suggested using Belarc, you did and said it failed miserably but you now know what is wrong but failed to put that on this thread for anyone who may have an answer. If that were my computer and there was not much to back up then I would save that stuff and then use the recovery partition or CD that came with the computer and return it to factory defaults. At this point I definitely would not be calling in any service person because using the recovery tools is what they would likely do for you as the least expensive fix. Using the recovery partition or CD removes every bit of junk that is cluttering up the computer. Repair techs can be expensive. As it seems this is an older computer you should shut down, remove the power cord and take off the left side to see how much dust and dirt has gathered in there over the years. Dust bunnies can cause heat build up and make the computer unstable.

Because you can remove the hard and floppy drive without a cure you might try a different keyboard. Yes I know it sounds silly but I did read about a similar incident long ago.

It may not cure the sound but may overcome the multiple openings of any given program. Borrow a keyboard, you only need it for a few minutes if you do not have a spare lying about the house.

I agree that dying hard drives can make a clicking noise. It can also be something as simple as a wire or cable touching a fan blade as it spins. I would check the internal fans just to be sure. A clump of dust or gunk can also cause a fan blade to make noise.

UPDATE:

I put in a new fan today and the noises are gone. My computer hasn't been this silent since it was new.

Thanks for the replies, and I'm happy that it was a $15 fan replacement instead of the hard drive.

I turned on the computer today and no clicking. So far it is not the hard drive or the floppy drive and it is not a memory module as I tested that last night. The CPU cooling fan is a new one. It is one of those with the copper tubes and is suppose to be better than the standard cooling fans. Could it be the video card? I have a Radeon 7500.
I also want to thank everyone who posted quick responses.

The new piped heatsinks can be huge, I have the silver orb and had to trim the fins on one side to avoid hitting the power supply. Is it possible that this new heatsink is almost touching something and perhaps a slight vibration is causing it to tap on another component? The only thing on the video card could be perhaps the power cord to the onboard fan is touching the blades intermittently.
