computer making 'noises'- almost constant..

The last 2 days my computer has been making rather loud 'noises'- like the dvd part has a disc in it, but I checked and it does not. This is almost constant at times. I scan every time the computer tuurns on- what could it be?

Is this a constant steady noise somewhat like the fan on a higher speed than normal or sporadic on and off sounds you are getting? How old is the computer? I was wondering if there were dust bunnies in there cloging up the heatsink on the processor creating a heat issue.

Have you tried inserting a CD or DVD to see if the sound changes in any way once the drawer is closed?

I usually associate unusual noises to a hard drive that is starting to fail so immediatley back up everything you need just in case in fact using an image program to image that drive would be very wise. I would get the free belarc tool and run it to see if it says anything about the hard drive health. If it sounds at all like clicking noises get to backing up your stuff asap.

My hubby stumbled on a parts place online and today the part arrived! Wow No thanks to the Samsung people.He put it in and we watched without the whirring and then YEP it started up again!!!! Guess it was the other fan. BTW I see a pile of U tubers have made videos on their disillusionment with their Samsung TVs

Adding a Well Tank to a Constant Pressure System

Although they are very seldomly used today, piston pumps are positive displacement pumps. Water enters a cylander and a moving piston pushes the water out in a positive displacement. These type of pumps have two serious drawbacks for residential applications. 1. They are low volume pumps, which means to increase volume we must use larger pumps. 2.If a positive diplacement pump pushes against a closed system, the water will not compress therefore the force must be relieved in some manner or it will damage the pump, piping system or the storage tank therefore it is absolutely essential that we have an air/water type pressure tank to aborb the energy and control the pump operation. A centrifigal pump is a Non-displacement type pump. The centrifigal pump works by rotating an impellor at high speed. The water in the impellar is then thrown outwards against the pump body at high velocity which attempt to compress the water against the impellar housing. Understanding that water will not compress, this action then increases the pressure of the water which is relieved by pushing the water up the discharge pipe. The also causes a reduction in pressure at the impellar center intake opening which sucks additional water into the impellar. (techically speaking there is no such thing as suction. The water is actually forced into the pump by standard atmospheric pressure pushing down on the surface of the standing water in the well. The actual intake pressure is determined by how deep the pump intake is below the standing water level.) Centrigal pumps are rated by TDH (total dynamic head). Simple centrifigal pumps such as a sump pump have one impellar and while they have a high volume they typically have a very low TDH. By example, a common 1/3hp sump pump might have a TDH equal to 30gpm @ 12' lift. A one square inch vertical column of water physically weighs .434lbs per foot of vertical rise therefore a pump that produces a 12' lift has an output pressure at the pump discharge port of 12'x .434lbs = 5.2psi. When computing the TDH of the piping system we must then compute the physical weight of the standing head of water in the riser pipe + the friction head of the water as if flows through the pipe and fittings. The total TDH of the piping system is then subtracted from the Dynamic pressure of the pump to determine the resultant flow at the pipe discharge point. As you can see a centrigal pump is a very high volume pump but it is a low pressure pump. When centrifigal pumps are used as deepwell pumps they stack multiple impellors so that the output of one impellar is the input to the next one. If you could see a deepwell centrigal pump in a cutaway view the impellar section would look very similar to the compressor stage of a jet engine. The distinct advantage of these non-displacement pumps is that the impellars can rotate even though there is no flow of water through the pump without undue damage to the pump. In theory of course. In actual practice, if a centrigal pump rotates with an empty chamber small droplets of water are propelled at high speed and they hit the impellar blades or pump body like a shot blaster and can cause pitting, chipping or other severe internal damage. In your case the deepwell pump is the "prime mover" for your entire water supply system. This means that the pump must not only lift the water from the well to the structure, but it must also produce the code required 35psi static head pressure to insure proper flow through all your fixtures. In order to do so the pump must be pushing into a closed system. If you were to discharge the water from the deep well pump into a reservoir that is open to atmosphere you would then need an auxillary pump to produce the required static head pressure for your plumbing system.

You can take it any way you want it. I can tell you I know a lot about the pump just as well as a lot of other products. I did not know admitting to any area of expertise was a crime when people ask about it. Is that not why people come to places like this? I feel that 25 years of repair experience is sufficient to offer advice on most things if people ask. I don't work for Pentair so I have no agenda. If you are looking to get the most efficient performance out of a pool pump today, the fact remains that the IntelliFlo is it. Jandy does not have a comparable pump nor does Hayward. They are trying but truth be told, if you know the market, they will not be a player for some time. There are those on other forums that are attempting to invent their own "IntelliFlo" and I say good for them. I'm more concerned about going with what is commercially available specifically for our industry. I've openly shared my opinions on a lot of stuff. Openly shared that some Pentair stuff is crap, some Hayward is and so is some Jandy. On the subject of Authorized installer. Not sure where you are in the whole picture as you don't indicate it, but consider this. In my area, there are about 50 pool service companies who choose to be professional enough to join a trade organization. Who knows how many others just work in the wings on their own. Of those 50, I can verify personally that 3 actually took three days of their time when they could have been earning money and drove 100 miles to get "authorized". I'm one. We invested time to learn about something new. Is it the end all? No. I sell more two-speed pumps today than I do IntelliFlo. But, as you are aware, this topic is pretty important. If I do not know it, I'm not providing my customers what they want. Of those other 47 companies I mentioned, what they have to offer the public is what they invest on their own time. At this point, there are far more bad IntelliFlo installations going in than good. The "authorized" guys have taken time to learn it and that learning curve is huge. We have invested a lot of hours and want to see it succeed. Authorized means nothing more than we are recognized by the company as being able to do more for the customer in service. We have contacts that others do not and at one point, we could offer more rebate $ than the non-authorized guy. In my area, when an issue with this pump arises, there are two of us that are known as go to guys to solve it. Issues that warranty stations can't even fix. That only comes from dedicating time to the product. I'm real big on a water treatment brand that is little known too. Am I biased? Sure. It works where other stuff does not. When you have a problem, would you rather have someone tickle your fancy with all kinds options that could cost you extra money or do you want straight talk with what we have found works better? Do you want a guy at $45/hour who is going to take 3 hours to do a job or a guy at $85/hour for 45 minutes who is on top of something. I'm going to recommend the higher priced guy as it is best for you. not because I like him. The pump is no different. I also happen to be factory trained by Jandy. They have some great stuff and most of it is way too expensive. Some worth the extra cash, some not. There are also other issues I have with them. I am biased for any product in its own unique situation. Ask any guy who has worked on a lot of stuff. He will tell you the best product in each category. Right now, Pentair is leading in most areas so they get the most referrals. How do you reconcile the issues most people here have with builders? I find it ridiculous that a builder will take 60K from an owner and then have the audacity to say he is going to put in a line of equipment simply because he is in bed with the builder. Yeah, he's doing a great service to the customer by giving them not always the best and then getting freebies on the back side for his exclusivity. That is the way it works with the building industry in most cases. i think builders will get a better reputation if they come to the owners and simply ask, "what do you want"? Unfortunately, they like to be biased in favor of quality in most cases.

The fan on my older computer growls when it's first turned on, but if I reach around to the back of the computer and rap it with my fingers a little it'll stop. I should swap it out, but it's been going on for years!

Today it is quiet...
I did the Belarc test and failed miserably in parts- security, it mentioned events advisor, application advisor among many other items- just what I was asking about yesterday.
Now that I know that areas need to be fixed, how do I go about that? There are WAY too many for somebody to tell me how to do them individually!
I don't do any kind of banking, business- reports with my computer- just email and surfing, so I really don't have anything to backup except a few email addresses- only about 6.
If I am about to die, I will need to know how to avoid doing anything that maybe I did to cause this- still trying desperately for computer classes, but none here in this two-horse town.
Is there a way to fix what Belarc says is wrong?

I forgot to answer- the noise is not like a highspeed fan- it makes different clicking noises, then maybe a fan- the noises are not alike.
Today I am having more problems with the 'this program not responding' and getting kicked off- sometimes every time I go to a new site. Must remember to call computer service tomorrow.
Maybe it is dying- it certainly sounds like it is in great pain.

Last Friday you started this thread about your computer not responding. Genes suggested more info would be a great help and I made a couple of suggestions including a site with fixes listed for what may be your problem. What happened? No point going further until we can understand what you did and if anything worked.

You started this thread on Sunday, I asked how old the computer was - no answer. I suggested inserting a CD or DVD to eliminate that as the issue perhaps. What happened?

Ravencajun suggested using Belarc, you did and said it failed miserably but you now know what is wrong but failed to put that on this thread for anyone who may have an answer.

If that were my computer and there was not much to back up then I would save that stuff and then use the recovery partition or CD that came with the computer and return it to factory defaults. At this point I definitely would not be calling in any service person because using the recovery tools is what they would likely do for you as the least expensive fix. Using the recovery partition or CD removes every bit of junk that is cluttering up the computer. Repair techs can be expensive.

As it seems this is an older computer you should shut down, remove the power cord and take off the left side to see how much dust and dirt has gathered in there over the years. Dust bunnies can cause heat build up and make the computer unstable.

owbist- sorry- I thought I had answered everything. I try to be conscientious but some of the meds I have to take make me an airhead.
I did put in a cd- and took it out. It didn't make an difference. The other day it stopped making the noises- least for now.
The belarc test had so many 'red flags', that I wouldn't be able to type them all. I don't know how to show the page of results as I see other people do- that would make sense to you guys, I'm sure.
I still have the cd that came with the computer- I will reload it tonite. I didn't realize it took all the junk out- I knew it restored settings to the original, but not that it took the bad stuff out.
I will look at the inside for dust- I am unable to see small things like the 'hinges' that open to it though. I will have to go to the computer server to have them open it for me. They don't charge for help- sometimes their techs seem to make a problem worse- so it's a good thing we don't have to pay them!! It is TCT West- I don't know if that is a well known/used company or just a local one. They do cable tv, computer server (satelitte and phoneline) and landline phone service.
I will get help with opening the computer and let you know. It will probably be a couple days.

ilmbg, sorry I had forgotten from a previous post you had mentioned your meds messing with you somewhat. My post was not intended to give you a bad time so much as to emphasise what Genes had stated.

Yes using the restore partition or CD which ever you were supplied with will take this computer back to the same as the day you brought it home. Everything on there now will be gone. But as you have stated that all your data is backed up you have nothing to worry about in that respect.
