Why not have them move the electrical so that you can have sconces instead (more flattering lighting anyways). The mirror company can cut holes in the mirror. You could even do one fixture above this way as well. Just make sure you pick fixtures that will look good reflected in the glass (ie, not half glass shades or anything like that).

Thanks for the reply. Sconces won't work, unfortunately. These are pretty wide mirrors (5+ feet), so I think the light wouldn't reach the sink area (middle of vanity/mirror).

I think the best solution would be to scrap the idea of a fixture over the mirror and put in recessed lights instead. I hear that's bad light for a bathroom mirror, though, AND we're pretty far along for such a change. All wiring and painting has already been done. So I'm trying to stick to the original plan, if possible.

I was hoping for an update on what you decided -- did you go with the recessed lights? If so, are you happy with them, or are there issues with shadows, etc.? I too have a large mirror which I'd rather not have to place any wall lighting on, but I'm concerned about how well recessed lighting alone would work (I know it's not usually suggested).

I have a very wide mirror as well. It goes up to the ceiling. I had the glass people cut holes for the light fixtures.

Wow, annkathryn, what a great solution! Can you tell me about those lights? I've looked at so many, but never came across yours.

Another idea I've seen (for those trying to figure this out, as I am) is pendants instead of wall-mounted fixtures.

I think you have to pick and fall in love with your light fixture before you decide! Once you have it in hand, you can really play around with how high to hang it. The mirror and shower doors are the last things to go in usually so you can see how your vanity/backsplash/etc. work on the wall before having to decide.

The fixture I bought has 4 individual handblown glass globes that can hang either pointed up or down (very modern) and I realized that I like them down more but DH is very tall-oops. I had the electrician move the box up to suit my needs and to cut the hole in the mirror is only around $50 so affordable to have it "custom" done. Just be careful not to go too close to the edge, the mirror guy said he had to have at least 3 inches from the edge to do a cut out.

Now that I am getting close, I am not sure that I am going to do a full wall mirror afterall-lol. The trend seems to be for nice framed mirrors and I am finding a bunch I like!

We just demo'd our bath. For over 30 years I had a sheet glass mirror with sconces on each side. I never had enough light in that room. Today I bought a beautiful fixture that has 4 lights that are going to point downward. I am also going to get a beautifully framed mirror to hang there. I plan on setting the fixture where I want it, then getting a mirror to fit the opening. It will be so pretty!!!

Annkathryn, thanks for the link. I really like that fixture a lot!! In your bathroom, the glass looks off-white, but on the Bellacor page it looks very white. Can you tell me which it is? Also, does the glass have any texture? (I really hate not being able to see these things in person!)

mmme the light is white glass and it's textured, but only very lightly, to make it opaque. Hope that helps.
