Comfortable tub length??

Adding a tub in the process of our remodel and DH and I are having a "discussion" about length of new tub. I am 5'4", he is 6'3". I am worried that a 72" tub will be too long for me to enjoy -- I will just slide to the bottom b/c my toes won't reach the end. He is worried that he will be chewing on his knee caps in a shorter tub.

Wondering if others have found themselves in this situation and what was your solution?

You are right that a 72" tub will be too long for you, but any shorter won't work for your husband. I have seen removable "footrests" sold for just this purpose. It is used at the foot section of the tub so the shorter family member doesn't slide under. I think it is some type of firm waterproof pillow, but I am not sure. I am pretty sure Kohler makes them. That might be your best bet.

Thanks astridh, that may be our solution. I also talked with our plumber today when he was by about something else and asked him what he installs most often. He indicated that in most spec homes he has done builders put in 60", but custom builds vary depending on customer, of course.

Manufacturers only make things that they can sell. If they made a 58" tub they might only sell one, and that would be to your. If you cannot use a 60" tub, the next smaller commercial one is 54". I sat in so many (although not either of the above two) and the only ones that I really loved were the Maax Melodie (66") and the Maax ... (can't remember the name, but it was 72" so too long for us). I LOVE the Maax Melodie! I even got it as a soaker because I didn't want the energy of jets, just hot water. I sprayed more insulation on the back, and insulated the deck into which it was installed with loose insulation. It holds its heat for over 30 mins! So there's a 66" tub to try. I do recommend that you try anything you're considering buying, because if you're picky about fit, like I am, not all tubs that people say fit them will fit you.

18" or 20" high tub for tub/shower combo?

I'm 5'7" and I just measured my lower leg to see if it was 18". It is just under 18". If I were to step over the 18" tub I'd have to get on my tippy toes. If you never take, but the occasional bath, I'd go with the Villager as Writersblock suggests. If you don't like the Villager style, the standard alcove replacement Bellwether has a nice modern look yet is only 14" high like the Villager. Easy to step over, and it can still provide a bath:)

Who's going to use it more? At our house I'm in the tub much more than my husband, so I think I would get priority ;)

I will definitely be in it more, but our 8 and 5 y.o. will want to get in, too. I also went back and remeasured the architecht's drawings and from what I can tell a 66" tub is what is spec'd for the space -- so, think I will try and get my DH to agree to that length -- think it will fit the space best and give us a little larger deck around the tub.

It really depends on teh style of the tub. If it is a dual person with a center drain then 72" will not be too long for you as both sides slope down and you have a smaller bathing well space. A 72" single ended tub (drain on one end) would be too long for you...Go for the 72" dual ended tub and he will think it will be plenty big for him and you will know that you will not be floating in it!
