Is a hard drive upgrade in order?

Our 5-6 yr old Dell 2400 (sounds old, but works well) has an 80gb harddrive that's down to less than 15% free space remaining on it so I can no longer defrag. (Has XP home, RAM maxed out at 2Mb, with a P3 equivalent chip or similar)

I suppose I could 1) do some serious house-cleaning to free up enough space, or 2) figure out how to upgrade a harddrive (there's no extra slot for it, so I'd have to do it a bit more indirectly, or 3) use this as an excuse to buy yet another primary computer. Thoughts?

I'd start with housecleaning, particularly temp files, unnecessary files and system restore points to see just how much could be freed up. Also, what existing data could you transfer to another media?

You could get an external drive and create an image of the current drive, then install a new drive and restore from the image.

If that intimidates you, you can just get an external drive and store things you don't use all the time on the external drive (not programs because they take too long to load when on an external device and some won't load that way).

There's a similar package from Apricorn (I've seen it on Newegg) that also includes a drive image program that will transfer the OS and boot sector to the new drive and resize the partition for you.

The easiest way to do it is to get a drive image software program and image your existing drive to your backup device. Then take the existing drive out, put the new drive in and use the imaging software to restore the contents to the new drive. Be careful when you restore from the image to the new drive. Some imaging programs require a parameter in order to use more space than the old drive used. The best known drive imaging program is probably Norton Ghost. Another well known product is Acronis True Image. There are others out there as well. I used Drive Image from Terabyte Unlimited to upgrade my laptop to a larger drive.

Raven - I have one of my posts that got eaten by goblins - and one of your posts that is missing from this thread. I will paste them both here - for the sake of keeping the integrity of the thread. Let me know if this is what was missing that you posted (or did more disappear) Here's my missing post: Damcoy - I'm always forgetting to do a google search. Raven - it was an OEM drive from Dell - no instructions. I vaguely recall that I'd want to format in NTFS and not FAT32 - though I don't recall what each of those are. When i first booted up my pc it did see the new hard drive - but I haven't known how to find it again. It seems to be suggesting that it's being labelled as a canon something or other. I don't know what that means to go into the boot menu at start up to see how it's listed. It did not give me an option of which to boot to - of course there's no operating drive on the second drive (at least I guess there's not since I didn't put one there). I also don't know how to back up my existing drive - which is part of what I want the second drive for. I'd like to back up my programs (and drivers? how would I do that) - perhaps on one partition. And have one or more partitions for files - like video, picture, music, data (word files, emails, etc, saved pages from the web?). So again, how do I go into the boot menu and see how they're listed? There is a difference in size - the second drive is 1/5TB =- the first is 500 GB. How could I mess up my existing original drive? by reformatting it? seems i have to have a place to back it up to before i back it up - I guess I could back it up on my external 640GB hard drive. Lynn. ------------------------------- And here's the one from you that was emailed to me: I would use an imaging program and make a full copy of your existing drive to your external hard drive so that you have it should something go wrong. There are good free imaging programs, for those with vista and windows 7 there is now a built in imaging feature. On my computer as soon as it starts to boot up it flashes up and says to enter the boot menu hit esc, I just keep tapping it so I am sure I hit it at the right time, your computer may be different this is not uniform on all computers. Once you get into that area you will see the drives listed, you can choose which one to boot to and what order. I would do some research on what you are wanting to accomplish. I did a lot of reading and researching before I did mine and it really paid off. One thing I had not expected was for the SATA cable to come loose from the mother board after it was all set up, scared the you know what out of me! Luckily I have a see through case and saw the cable dangling. This is a big *Thank you* and an update to those who offered encouragement and comments. 1. I ended up using MiniTool and it did just what it was supposed to. I had hooked the new SSD to the computer with a USB cable, but even then the transfer only took an hour (no videos, not very many photos). I had a little trouble inside the tower because of a dearth of cables. HP Pavillions apparently don't waste an inch of wire. Because of that I wasn't able to hook up a spare drive as I'd hoped, but I may be able to get more cables in there "someday", and next time I buy a desktop, if I do, I'll look inside for more flexibility. Also had some trouble mounting the new drive. The 2.5" adapter I picked up at BB Big Box wasn't suitable, but I ended up being able to mount directly to the internal framework once I found suitable screws. I probably could have gotten away with a zip strip or such, but it would have screamed "amateur" too loud ... As it happens I also had a drive from an older Gateway, and wanted to see if anything could be recovered from it. So while I had my box apart I plugged in that drive, booted it with the USB boot disk I'd made for this project, and got it to respond to the recovery disks that came with it. I lost all the files, but we had most of those backed up from before, so sooner or late I'll try to restore those. So all in all I took Richard's advice and had fun, and now my wife thinks I'm a genius. Thanks again! :-)M

the thing I am worried about is the fact you said it Sounds old if this sound is coming from the tower it could well be coming from the hard drive and if a hard drive is making sounds it did not make when new it can be an indicator of a drive that is on it's way to failing.
I would try running some of the programs that test the health of your hard drive and see what you get.
I am sure you did not mean 2Mb of Ram perhaps 2 Gig?
Hard drives are not terribly expensive and they are pretty easy to install, just depends really on what you want to put into an older machine. It would be an excellent candidate to load linux on and learn a new OS.
But first you need to learn of the health of that drive and definitely do housekeeping on it no matter what you do.
When was the last time you opened that case and cleaned out the dust bunnies? Dust bunnies can often be the reason things fail due to the heat caused and them getting stuck in fans which makes new noises too.

Replacing the hard drive is certainly an option. I just did a quick look an a 160G EIDE drive was $60 in a retail package which means it will come with mounting hardware, cable, and software/instructions to transfer the data from the old drive to the new. Replacing a drive isn't especially hard but it does take some basic understanding of how hardware works and making connections. You don't need to permanently mount the new drive to make the transfer, you just need to be careful any exposed electronics doesn't touch the metal computer chassis

If you do switch drive you may want to run disc clean-up first and get rid of those unnecessary files so you don't waste time moving them.

Thanks everyone - I think you've encouraged me to replace the HD in the near future....after a bit of clean-up, of course.

BTW, raviencajun, I just meant that 6-7 years is old in computer dog years - it's actually quiet and normal. Yup, it's had the case cleaned out "a couple times", too (by me).

ahhh ok got ya I read it as it sounds old as in making the sounds us old folks make LOL I know those sounds too well!

I recently added a second hard drive to one of mine so that I have my windows on one drive and my linux on the other in the same box, was a breeze to install the drive itself.

There are several free drive imaging programs around now too so should you decide to do that, image the drive and put on a new drive just ask and we can give you some links.

What was the popular drive size bios limitations 5 or 6 years ago ? May have to partition up a new larger drive.

I have a 9 year old Dell as one of my computers and it also has an 80 GB hard drive. I've managed to keep the free space to over 60% by practicing a little basic housekeeping now and then. I think you can get several more years of service out of that computer very easily.

I suspect you have: a) a lot of old programs taking up space that you never use, and b) a ton of pictures and other old files that should have been archived in a backup long ago. To keep it simple, my suggestion is to clean the crap off that hard drive, and then go buy yourself an external hard drive that connects by USB. I just bought a 320GB Toshiba for $67 which comes with backup software installed and requires no skills to get working. Heck, you could even backup everything you have jammed onto that old external hard drive before you delete the crap if you're nervous about losing anything. And, when/if that old hard drive ever fails, you can install a new internal drive and restore everything back to it from the external drive.
