I think my hard drive is shot

I've had an external hard drive for a few years now. All of a sudden, accessing the drive became a real chore for the computer. It would sometimes take forever to access it, and then when I tried to close the My Computer window, I would get a "Not Responding" Error.

When I was finally able to get access to it, I knew I had to copy anything over that I could. I was able to copy some stuff, but my biggest folder -- the one with all my MP3s in it -- is missing. It just plain won't show up in the directory.

A friend suggested I try a recovery program. He loaned me a disk (I forget what it was called now), but when I booted the computer and ran the darned software, after 4 hours of "scanning my hard drive" it gave me some kind of error, telling me it couldn't do anything until I upgraded the firmware.

The files aren't important enough to pay someone to look at the hard drive, but on the other hand I could save days' worth of time if I could get into it. I know that the information is still there, and that probably the directory is just out of whack. Any suggestions? Thanks!

My husband is (what I call) a computer genius and more often than not...or almost always, he is is able to retrieve data. I think if you find someone who knows what they are doing, they can save it for you...I don't know if the average repair guy does much for these types of things, but someone who is a pro. should be able to do it. A few months ago some people at church told us all their wedding pictures had been lost when they thought their hard drive was lost. They had taken it to a repair place and told there was no hope, but my husband was able to retrieve everything...so, this is why I say, I think that if you take it to someone who you can be sure knows something, they may actually be able to help you. I am going to get a whole house surge protector. But should I also invest in getting "good" surge protectors for my electronics (tv and related peripherals, computer and peripherals?). If so, could someone point me toward a good one. I wouldn't know what makes a surge protector good (and think just getting expensive is not the way to make the selection). I do have surge protectors in all those areas, but don't think we selected them with any real knowledge. Thank you. Lynn. PS - and my efforts to copy are delayed - bc. I can't find the replacement drive. We received so many packages last week - and during the power outage - so I was opening and putting things away by flashlight - and so far, I can't find it. have this scary feeling that my husband or cleaning woman thought the box was trash and tossed it out. This happened to me 5 months ago. Everything lost. New computer also. I sent my hard drive to California to a co. called Drive Savers ( i think). They first look over the drive to see if anything is recoverable, if not they don't charge anything. if there are recoverable files it can be anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars to recover. My drive turned out to be shot, nothing recoverable. Thousands of pics lost. I would have paid to have them back. But we did have a limit we would have gone to. Pictures are almost priceless. Thankfully I had downloaded many to Photobucket & had many of them on DH's compute as well. Good luck, I feel for you for sure. It is a sinking feeling to see that blank , blue screen.

Another option would be Spinrite. I think it costs about $100, but I've gotten stuff off of drives that were otherwise pretty well shot using it.

Ya know, I thought you were just giving me a wise answer, but I Googled it, and it looks like that might be an option. I don't think anything's physically wrong with it though. I think the data is just corrupted.

And bpgreen, yes, Spinrite was the one I used. As I said, it scanned for four hours, and then told me I need to upgrade my firmware.

If you are willing to tinker you could probably remove the hard drive from the external case then slave it inside the tower. No need for additional ribbon cable, for this you could simply use the ribbon and power cables from the CD/DVD. You would need to change the jumper from 'Master' to 'Slave' of course.

Might just work being directly connected instead of through the USB port

freezing definitely is an option it has worked for many people but you have to be fast.
