Hard drive died, my pics are gone

I'll apologize in advance for the pity party that's coming.

Our external hard drive died. DH says a pin sheared off of something and the discs were grinding against each other or something of that nature. This year's pics were not backed up. Vacations gone. Birthdays gone. Sports pics gone. Kitchen reno gone.

My friends and family are sending copies of vacations, birthdays, and sports, but nobody else was documenting my kitchen reno.

I had told myself that I wouldn't post any pics until we were at least 98% done. I purposely didn't upload pics to photobucket so that I wouldn't be tempted to post them. Now I'm going to have to search through old pics for any that show the true hideousness of the old kitchen and not just closeups of my kids covered in flour.(I love those pics)

Of course, when we're finally done, I'll post finished pics, but there won't be any sledgehammer pics, or 7 layers of floor pics, etc.

I am SO sorry. We come to rely on computers so much and when they let us down, they REALLY let us down!! After my DD lost her pics, I got an external hard drive and backed up all of my stuff. I am also going to burm everything to DVD at least twice a year. I would be terribly upset to lose my stuff, as I know you must be.

That's awful LaxSuperMom! (The loss of family pictures are the worst!)

I would send your hard drive out to experts in hard drive restoration...yes, there are such places! They may be able to retrieve at least some things...

If you need references let me know, I'll ask around at work to see if anyone can recommend someone....(I work in IT so there's a good chance I can find several references for you.)

Now...off to back up my pictures!!!!

Here's a photo tour of how I do mine(since it's easy to show). I have a huge single file under my photos files that is labeled 'conifer collection'. This contains the several dozen genus/species I collect/grow and has individual folders leading to individual cultivars. Once in the cultivar folder, I have simply the name and then year(with special details in parenthesis). This will allow me to have a lengthy chronological sequence of pictures I can refer back to. While it's time consuming, the Winter here are horrendously dreary, and thus I am allowed plenty of time to work on it. The entire 'Conifer Collection' folder with it's 3,000 photos and 1,400 folders still fits onto a single DVD which I backup twice a year onto a disc. Someday, I'll be glad to share them with whoever asks, once I make proper corrections and have 3-4 years of growth on 99% of my plants to show people. -Will

Ken, I actually have 2 physical hard drives in my computer, each formatted and partitioned into logical drives. Wikipedia says the following about it: Purposes for Partitioning * Separation of the operating system files from user files * Having an area for operating system virtual memory swapping/paging * Keeping frequently used programs and data near each other. * Having cache and log files separate from other files. These can change size dynamically and rapidly, potentially making a file system full. * Use of multi-booting setups, which allow users to have more than one operating system on a single computer. For example, one could install Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows or others on different partitions of the same hard disk and have a choice of booting into any operating system (supported by the hardware) at power-up. * Protecting or isolating files, to make it easier to recover a corrupted file system or operating system installation. If one partition is corrupted, none of the other file systems are affected, and the drive's data may still be salvageable. Having a separate partition for read-only data also reduces the chances of the file system on this partition becoming corrupted. * Raising overall computer performance on systems where smaller file systems are more efficient. For instance, large hard drives with only one NTFS file system typically have a very large sequentially-accessed Master File Table (MFT) and it generally takes more time to read this MFT than the smaller MFTs of smaller partitions. Also, ACDSee does the following: Get organized with ACDSee With ACDSee, organize the way that works best for you. zep, You said "When you installed that program it created numerous registry entries, those are still on the old computer, and are needed to run Microsoft office. " But I thought that sort of thing would be on the old computer's drive. Or is it elsewhere? If elsewhere, then of course, it makes sense that I can't run Word. That said, I can open a Word doc but see a message to the effect that "not registered for use by this user." Word isn't installed on the new computer, not even as a trial, so I don't understand why a Word doc would even open.

Now even I had to look up an acronym - SIL. ;-) Ok, so you have MS Works XLR & WPS files. The problems you are having - or going to have - is that Works is old, and the Office XP Pro your SIL gave you is also old, being actually Office 2002, version 10 of Office. If you don't have too many files, I think your best bet is to try an online file converter. Zamzar claims to be able to open and convert Works files. http://www.zamzar.com/ Save : XLR (spreadsheet) files to xlsx WPS (word) files to docx If you don't want to buy a new version of MS Office, try installing LibreOffice - the newer version of OpenOffice - and it will open xlsx and docx files [ If you want to stick with your SIL's MS Office XP Pro, then convert those files to xls & doc files, respectively. That version of Office is very old though. ] There are other ways of handling this, but probably if you you're going to try anything else, your best bet would be buy MS Works off Ebay or Amazon for $10 or so, open and convert all the files. Btw, you can't even open a .doc file in Office XP Pro ?? That's not a good sign - probably a sign of corruption. Btw #2 - When you say you can't open files, I take it they are on your current hard drive, and not within some compressed backup folder. That is, not within a zip file or the like. Re your backup cds : Can you load one of them, then rummage around in their files and tell us what you find ? (as in, names of files and extensions ?) Most likely they are proprietary formats, but if we know what they are, we could perhaps tell you how to retrieve them. Last, anyway you can get the hard drive back from the repair service ? Probably not, but it would be a second source of backup files. Let us know how it all works out.

OMG laxsm! You have every right to a pity party. I just switched over to a digital camera this year and even with downloading the pix on photobucket, I'm always afraid they will "disappear". Also like you I have been avoiding posting progress pix because I want to do it once it's all done. Hopefully Buehl's suggestion will be able to work for you.

Buehl, Thanks for the offer, but my DH is an IT guy(actually an IBMer) and claims that it'll be about $1500 to recover the data if we send it out. With our friends and family sending us family and kid pics, he doesn't see why I need the reno pics.

Yeah, my DH also told me it would be expensive!

IBMer? I've worked with quite a few IBMers in my career...all in the DC/VA/MD area.

The exact same thing happened to us - we actually brought it to Best Buy and their technical people were able to recover my pictures file. It wasn';t exactly cheap, but it was worth it!

This happened to me 5 months ago. Everything lost. New computer also. I sent my hard drive to California to a co. called Drive Savers ( i think). They first look over the drive to see if anything is recoverable, if not they don't charge anything. if there are recoverable files it can be anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars to recover.
My drive turned out to be shot, nothing recoverable. Thousands of pics lost.
I would have paid to have them back. But we did have a limit we would have gone to.
Pictures are almost priceless. Thankfully I had downloaded many to Photobucket & had many of them on DH's compute as well.

Good luck, I feel for you for sure. It is a sinking feeling to see that blank , blue screen.

Miracle! We were hiding Santa gifts in our luggage and DH found a disc he had burned w/ some of the kitchen pics on it in his weekender bag. He had thought his parents might want to see our progress and then forgot to bring them out during the trip(too busy fishing.) He burned them as a DVD not a CD, but it'll just take a little bit of wrangling to get them back on the computer. Yay!
