How do I run programs from a hard drive in an encolsure

Mother board on old computer died. Now have new Dell 570 desktop; 6G memory, 750G drive, Win 7, and working well.

I want to to retrieve images & Word docs from the old drive and will use that drive as external storage. So I installed the "old" drive in a Rocketfish 3.5 inch SATA enclosure. I now can easily access all my previous docs & images.

My problem is that I would like to run MS Office 2002-2003 and MS Office 2007 which are installed on the enclosed drive. (I can't install either program on the new machine because I used up my "quota" of installs.) I thought that would be easy to accomplish. Just find the exe file, right?

But not so.

So, is it even possible to run a program that's on the enclosed drive?

And if so, how do I do it?

You could install Open Office on the new Dell. If it suits your needs, problem solved. Nothing to lose by trying...and it's free.

That's about your only choice and a good one. There are only a few portable applications I know of, MS Office isn't one of them.

Just find the exe file, right?

When you installed that program it created numerous registry entries, those are still on the old computer, and are needed to run Microsoft office.

I am going to get a whole house surge protector. But should I also invest in getting "good" surge protectors for my electronics (tv and related peripherals, computer and peripherals?). If so, could someone point me toward a good one. I wouldn't know what makes a surge protector good (and think just getting expensive is not the way to make the selection). I do have surge protectors in all those areas, but don't think we selected them with any real knowledge. Thank you. Lynn. PS - and my efforts to copy are delayed - bc. I can't find the replacement drive. We received so many packages last week - and during the power outage - so I was opening and putting things away by flashlight - and so far, I can't find it. have this scary feeling that my husband or cleaning woman thought the box was trash and tossed it out. I surprisingly ran into this same issue. I've called HP before, the first time being when i took my new Pavilion Slimline out of the box and the hard drive was not being recognised. I called and was immediately told that it was no longer under warranty. I said i had just bought it about 4 hours ago at a major retailer. I was told it didn't matter, apparently it was an older model that was on the store shelves for some time now. Four calls and three hours later my computer was working, sort of. I had a few calls in the past 9 months, usually for not booting properly or at all. I'm still waiting for recovery discs from about 9 months ago. Last night i came home and my computer was frozen. I had to reboot it. It ran the CHKDSK (again) and afterwards i was missing about 100GB of data. I called HP today. After he said his greeting i opened with "pending hard drive failure". There was no talk of recovery discs. He had me run the hardware diagnostics. Surface scan : HD535-2W. The fun lies in finding a service location in Calgary. He said they had service centres & partners EVERYWHERE. Their server was offline so we couldn't get it from their website. He gave me businesses to call. In a city of over 1000000 people you'd think there would be SOMEWHERE i could go to have the hard drive replaced. He was very helpful. I just wish their computers were too. It would save me all of these calls, from which i am taking a break. This would be the first time i got someone who really listened to me too. It's really nice when that happens.

Do you need to copy and paste things on the external HD? I shouldn't think so. Apart from the automatic backing up we have it set to do, if there is any individual file or folder we want to put on it, we simply left click on the file's or folder's icon and drag it to the icon for the external HD and it gets copied there. We installed the entire Oxford English Dictionary program on my husband's computer's external HD and it works fine, but a couple of other programs just wouldn't run right when we tried to install them on it. Come to think of it, the OED has a verification process by which you have to show the computer that you actually possess the CDs for it, and that may be why the company doesn't mind which drive you keep it on. We haven't tried downloading any programs to the ext. HD yet, but it seems likely to me that many--especially the expensive programs that don't provide for periodically proving that you have the CDs--will very likely not run well from there. However, from what Cboy writes, with the help of Acronis, it looks like you can backup the whole of your internal HD, which would include programs. So, being new to external HDs myself (a 500GB Maxtor One Touch 4), I'd like to ask Cboy if you can actually remove programs from C:\ (to save space) and then run them from the external drive instead, or if what Acronis does is only to save them so you can reinstall them in C:\ after a disaster and run them from there.

More memory is good but at some point there is a diminishing return on the investment and that point is a function of what you are doing with your computer. Things like first person shooter games, video editing, photo editing (of very large files) all benefit from lots of memory. Writing an email to Aunt Betty doesn't require very much memory at all because the computer can process information far faster than you can type. Same thing for the Internet, your computer can render pages faster than your connection can supply the information. So if you have a slow internet connection, you're not likely to experience much, if any improvement. With that said, 4 gigs is probably a pretty good number. If you really want a WOW factor, get a solid state drive and use that for your O/S and critical applications. To try and answer some of your questions: - Windows doesn't care about the physical drive or any logical partitions. It does make good sense to install Windows 7 on the newer, faster drive. You'll get the best performance that way. When it comes time to get rid of XP, everything will be on one drive and that, if nothing else, should help you keep things mentally organized. - My understanding is that you have two physical drives, one with a functioning version of XP and the other blank. If that is not correct, say so NOW. - When you go to install Windows 7, it will recognize that there is another operating system (Windows XP) already installed. Windows 7 won't do anything to XP other than to set up the dual boot. Essentially it's computer language that says, "XP is there, Windows 7 is here, which one do you want to use?" - Logical partitions to a drive a largely a function of personal preference. Understand that it is more difficult (but not impossible) to non-destructively repartition a drive after you put data on it. If you, for example, have a partition for music, another for videos, and a third for pictures and find down the road that you have a lot more videos than music, it becomes more difficult to rearrange things. My suggestion is a single, large partition and use folders to organize your data.

But I thought that sort of thing would be on the old computer's drive. Or is it elsewhere? If elsewhere, then of course, it makes sense that I can't run Word.

That said, I can open a Word doc but see a message to the effect that "not registered for use by this user."

Word isn't installed on the new computer, not even as a trial, so I don't understand why a Word doc would even open.

This is perhaps an oversimplification, but the new computer expects those numerous registry entries to be on its own C:\ drive because thats where it expects to find them when you launch a program. Yours are still on the old drive...that won't work. If you must use MS Office, you're going to have to install it on the new Dell.

If you have the original installation disks, I think you might be able to call Microsoft to get the new machine authorized. since you're not using Office on the dead machine, that license should be available for you. It may not be able to be done automatically, but should be able to be done with a phone call.

Its an authorizing thing...the MS program does not recognize the new BIOS on the new machine, looking for the BIOS of the old machine..licence is only good for one machine..as noted by bpgreen...best to call MS and they should give you an new Key #

agree as long as you are still only using it on the max number you are allowed you are good, so if the one machine has died and is being replaced and is fully removed from the old machine that would still make you only have the allowed number, they should authorize.
