Problem formatting new hard drive

I bought a new 500GB hard drive to replace the 80GB hard drive in my Compaq Presario F500 laptop. When I format the drive before installing the operating system it tries to format it at 131GB instead of the 500GB. Am I doing something wrong when I'm starting the format? I am formatting it with my WindowsXP disc before attempting to upgrade to Vista.

There was a size limit with early versions of XP, which is what you're probably running into if you using the original install disc.

How are you installing Vista? If from a disc, just point Vista to the drive as part of the install and it will format it for you. Otherwise, assuming you're running XP with Service Pack 3, just format it from inside of Windows.

Whew! I took out the replacement second internal hard drive (and the external hard drive). Rebooted - everything booted up fine. Then I shut down. Reattached the external drive - booted up - everything's fine. So does it seem that the replacement drive from WD is bad as well? (I did not put the 2TB drive back in - but it was working fine before. Again - this drive was bought for when I get around to setting up a dual boot XP/Windows 7 drive - and until my family crisis - and multiple electronic/tech failures are resolved, I'm not going to tackle that one.) Don't know why it wouldn't boot from the original hard drive when the replacement second drive was installed. Any thoughts? since it does boot with the bad drive - although it mentions the hard drive problem and allows me to select F1 to continue. At least I'm up and running - and the main, original drive seems fine. (I have used Acronis - and did a back up and incremental over the summer. Then did a full clone in December when I thought the drive was failing. But I am still quite confused by the acronis instructions - and would like to start from scratch. Now I have a 2TB external drive and would like to make the proper kind of back up. How should I do this - as the words on some of instructions Raven often links use clone at one point but seem to be talking about a different kind of back up. One complication is that the original thread for acronis 2010 - with pics - is gone now and acronis 2011 instructions are more fleshed out). I have Acronis 2010. Thank you. Lynn.

When you ran chkdsk did you add s space then /f after to fix any errors it found? The 'Recovery console' - is that a partition or do you have that on a disk? You could download a Win98 startup from here, copy it to a floppy and run the formatting program it contains. It will format in FAT32 but at least it would clear off the corruption and allow you to re-install XP after another format from the XP CD with NTFS if you want. I would not be putting money into a PII computer unless you can find an older used hard drive for a few dollars. Your choice of course.

Yes, if they are identical, it should boot up and be the same as it was before. If there is a problem, it would be with windows activation.

I dunno, but curious. Maybe Open a Computer Management window and then look at the Disk Management. Select the drive0 and properties, digging back until you really get that drive properties Properties/Hardware/Properties/Volume/Populate ... something like that anyhow.
