Resizing photos woes...

Hi,

I have never stored my photos online. I have them on my hard drive and when I want to post one I was in the habit of using tinypic.com to resize and post. Recently, it seems they changed their interface and I have been having a problem getting the correct size. It used to be there was no choice of size but now they have a window that allows you to choose the size. I have a Firefox browser and because of an add on 'NoScripts', the site appears confusing to me and I have missed the size choice drop down menu until I got into a problem today and went back and looked at it.

I have evidently been using 'default'. I have no idea what default is, but two photos I posted this morning were too large for the thread and caused everyone on it to have to scroll to the right to read text. *sigh*

So, I have gone back to try to have the photos removed, which they might be able to do. In the meantime, I just wanted to let people know about the drop down menu for size choice.

I am also wondering why on two laptops at home, the photos don't appear to be too large and I don't have to scroll to the right to read text. Why is my experience viewing the thread different from other people's? On one laptop I have a high resolution 1600x1200...so I was thinking maybe that was it, but the second laptop has an average resolution.

Can anyone explain that to me?

I dunno about firefox but IE has a setting in it to resize graphics to fit the browser window, or if not checked to leave them alone = graphics off to the right if bigger than your window is open.

Look under internet setting options advanced in control panel.

Also - Some of the photo storage web sites will have settings to recognize graphic to fit user browser window and they will size graphics to fit.

I find Irfanview to be really good for this. The program is free and quite small. If you ever decide to do more with Irfanview you should also download in install the plugins. Open Irfanview, click File click Batch/Conversion rename... and follow along in the new window. You need to do landscapes separate from portraits but I am sure you are aware of that anyway.

i downloaded irfanview and all plugins. i resized a jpeg and it did it but it uses paintbrush or paint and saves the resized image as a bmp extention not a jpeg. when i tried to upload the resized file it was refused because the file is not valid.... ie not jpeg. :( :( so now i am wondering if i should uninstall this product as it is not doing what i want. IMPORTANT question - when i installed irfanview a window appeared asking about associations. i did not know what to do as all associations were NOT checked and i figured it made sense to use these associations so it knows how to open files with different extentions. so i clicked on select all. the next window then asked, and this is the issue, "You want to change current associations and to associate one or many file types with IrfanView! Are you REALLY sure?" that is an exact quote i did not add ! or caps. so i worried about the current wording and when it capitalized really, well i said no. it accepted that. so i assume i ended up with the same thing as if i did not check select all and left all boxes unchecked. should i have gone with select all and replied yes? i was afraid this might cause conflicts with other programs and their functions. not sure what to do. any suggestions? remember win 98 se did all this in mozilla browser. thanks, tom

Here's a link to the Test Forum, for anyone who wants to doodle away. Forgot about scrolling long links. Not only does it widen the entire thread, it also forces readers to copy and paste to view it, which a lot of us won't do either, ack! ;-) For anyone not familiar with alternatives, I'll post them, using Pottery Barn as an example. To put a live link in a post, there are two ways to do it: 1) When typing a post, instead of pasting the link right into the Message box (body) of the post, go to the boxes below the message box. Paste the web site's http://www.address.com in the box marked "Optional Link URL:". Then in the "Name of the Link:" box type in the name of the website. I just did that here so when you read my post you will see a link to Pottery Barn below and to the right of my message. It will say "Here is a link that might be useful:". ~OR~ 2) If you want to direct link right in the body of your post (like I did in Test Forum above) you can add html code. This method comes in handy when posting multiple links. Paste the link to your site (in this example Pottery Barn) right in your Message body: http://www.potterybarn.com/ You will need to add html code to the beginning and end of the link. You will also need to add the name of the site you're linking to (in this case 'Pottery Barn'). Add on html code is in bold below. So the string of text looks like this: a href="http://www.potterybarn.com/">Pottery Barn Important or it won't work: You have to wrap the entire string of text with angle brackets. So you must put a front angle bracket right at the beginning of that string of text directly in front of a href. You must put a rear angle bracket > right at the very end of the string of text, behind There are no spaces between the angle brackets and the other text. Think of the angle brackets as giving the entire string a tight hug! There is a single space between a href at the front. All other text in that line is typed with no spaces between it! So when I put that string together, spaced as noted,you should see an active link to Pottery Barn like this: Pottery Barn You can use that same string of commands for any web site. Just be sure the spacing is correct, substitute the name of your site where Pottery Barn is, and hug> that entire line tight with angle brackets! (cheesy I know, but might help you remember). Nonnie...I don't have Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0, so don't know how your program operates. I do have Adobe photoshop 7.0 and for me to resize my photos, I go to the top where it says images...I click on it and a box opens up that let's me change the size..That's the best I can tell you. Sorry. Bev

When you open the photo on your computer at home you are probably looking at it in windows picture and fax viewer which resizes it to fit your screen. When you look at it on an internet site your browser opens it and does not automatically resize it unless you do as Mikie says, which most people will not know to do.
My suggestion is to resize your photos before uploading them to tinypic. It is very easy to do using Irfanview which is a free program. Here is a link to a tutorial which explains how to do it in simple terms and has a link to the irfanview home page where you can download the program. Few people have their monitor resolution set at 640 x 480 any longer so it is safe to make the width of your pictures that you want to post 800 pixels, but I wouldn't make them wider than that.
By the way, to answer your question asked in another forum, no - you cannot remove the pictures once you posted them.
One more suggestion. Have you thought of using photobucket to upload your pictures you want to post instead of tinypic? They are run by the same people and work very much alike. Just go to photobucket.com and open a free account. Your pictures stay in your album on photobucket so that you can see and post them again later if you want to. Another advantage is if you make a mistake and post a picture you would like to remove you can delete it (or change the name) in your photobucket album and people will see a red x where the picture had been.

Hello...

Thanks for trying to help me out. I actually had someone tell me I could get the photo removed by tinypic and I decided to try. Sure enough, I used their contact email form on their site and they responded right away. They asked for the address of the photo which was under properties and within about 15 minutes it was off of the thread. Just thought someone in the same boat might like to know that at some point.

Bob...when I said I was viewing it and it was not too large and the text was not scrolling, I meant I was going to the thread on my firefox browser and looking at it. I still am not understanding why so many other people on the thread were trying to look at it and were seeing a very large photo and it had effected the text to the point that they had a scroll bar at the bottom of the page and had to scroll to the right to read the text. But rest assured, that I didn't intend to post that large of a photo. The tinypic site never used to offer a choice of sizes that I noticed and now they do and it was set at default, which was too large. So from now on, I will make sure it is set at a smaller size.

Someone on the thread suggested, maybe I didn't put enough space between the two photos and it was attempting to put the two photos side by side and that is why the text had to be scrolled. Which still doesn't explain why I didn't have to. I still wonder if it is my screen resolution. At this point, the problem is solved, I guess I am just curious. :-)

I checked the options for the Firefox browser and I don't see a checkbox that you describe that automatically resizes graphics on the browser page. But, I am getting a new computer soon and hopefully I will have fewer browser problems after that.

Yes, I am aware of photobucket and just haven't wanted to store my photos online. I may at some point but can't right now. Thanks for the free Irfanview program link. Looks very useful!
