60 in double vanity a tight squeeze?

Among other updates to our master bath, we plan on replacing our 60 in-long master bath vanity that sits in between two walls. We currently have one bowl (off center), which leaves lots of counter space for lotions and potions. I'd like to put a double sink in the new vanity, but my DH thinks we'll be bumping elbows against each other and the walls, plus he's concerned about the loss of counter and drawer space. Does anyone have this configuration (60" double sink between walls) or can anyone lend an opinion on whether my DH's concerns are valid enough to stay with one sink? (I also think for resale that two sinks in the master would be a good bonus.)

Mine is 65", and only has a wall on one side, but I'm still very happy that we converted from one sink to two. I shared your concerns, but for us, this arrangement is working out well.

First, we have a small bathroom, and storage space is limited, so I purchased oversized medicine cabinets. They are not elegant, but they take the stress off of limited counterspace.

Second, we "tweaked" the location of the sinks a little, which made a big difference. Ours is a fairly standard dual vanity, with a bank of drawers in the center, and a cabinet on each end, each holding the sink. Normally with this set-up, the sinks are each centered over the cabinet on each end, so you have only a few inches of counterspace on the ends, but lots in the middle. Rather than having the sinks centered over the outer cabinet (so that the middle of the sink is lined up with where the doors meet), our sinks are actually slightly set *inward*. My contractor had to cut into the "walls" of the center drawer bank a little to pull this off. He thought I was crazy, but it makes a big difference- if we had not done this, I'd constantly be elbowing the wall and feeling crowded. If you have a wall on each side, I think it's even more of an issue. This might be easier to visualize with a photo.....

The last thing I did was get fairly small sinks. How much room does it take to wash hands? I found American Standard sinks that are 11x14, but still 5" deep. (I like the depth for the occasional handwashing of a small delicate garment.) The sinks are small enough that the counter feels very roomy.

Try going into a showroom where they have stock 60" dual vanities, and stand in front of it imagining a wall on each side. For me, it is workable, but only with the sinks custom fit like we did.....just something to think about!

I'm having the same issues trying to configure my bathroom. Muscat, how much room do you have on either side of the sink? And how much between medicine cabinets and wall and each other? Thanks

Hi I finally got my key a couple of days ago. So yes the plan I posted is a mirror image. I forgot that there is a door to the closet. I wonder if I close up the door, and move the door next to the toilet bowl, and remove the door for the toilet bowl, if that will work. But it might be weird to have the entrance to the closet next to the toilet. I got some better measurements. The length of the tub is 62". But there is 2 inches of wall on one side of the tub, which I think is hollow. I don't know why it isn't flush with the wall where the doors to the closet and toilet are. The width of the tub from the wall backing is 41". From that same wall to the side of the vanity is 58". To the side of the cabinet is 59". I am tempted now to put a 59" x 32" tub (or maybe a 60"!?) next to the vanity (along the same wall), and I will have 32" to work with for a wall in shower on the doors side? Or any suggestion would be good. Few days ago, I came up with this: From forums But I think this is going to cost big time, involing moving the toilet, and half of the vanity, redoing the floor, wall,etc. And I don't know if the entrance to the closet would be too small (3 feet). By the way, I don't know how the DWV plumbing is run. Any thing I need to look for?

I'm putting two sinks into a 56" vanity for my girls' bathroom (4 girls share it). I'm installing Kohler Caxton, but can't decide whether to install the small or medium size. I noticed in the Kitchen-Bath store that on the medium Caxton, the granite over-hang was more than I would have expected for an undermount sink, especially at the upper drain hole edge. In effect is to give you a little more counter space. Plus, you couldn't see where the sink met the granite. That "line" was covered by the overhang. The bath shop gave me a pair of templates for each sized sink, I will figure out which works best. We are replacing these really ugly, whipped avacado looking cultured marble shell shaped sinks, which each measure 19" across. The Caxtons measure about 16.5 and 15 inches from side to side. Any change is a good one and will result in more counter space regardless of which sink size I choose.

I used masking tape and marked out the location of vanity and placement of sinks in my bathroom. Anything under 60" is very tight with two sinks. You are left with very little counter top between the sinks and a couple inches to the edge from the sink. There is not enough space to even put a cup. Yours may be a stand alone type vanity where neither side is up against a wall, which may not look or feel as tight. My incorrectly sized 57" vanity top was already ordered by the bath contractor and I tried to figure how how to make it work. I just could not and am going to reorder a 65" vanity to have the two sinks. I would rather have a longer, single sink that left you some counter space but couldn't change mine at that point without losing alot of the drawers. The bath shows have shown some beautiful oblong. single sinks on vanieites. They are not like vessel sinks but are set down into the cabinet so only an inch or so is above the vaniety. Candice Olson had one on her bathroom show that was a beautiful blue glass. I tried to find that sink but the show was in Canada and they do not give out suppliers. If you do go with two sinks, maybe you could use 16" sinks, leave off the side (backsplash?) area and possibly use the single faucets rather than the 8" spread faucets.

Personally I think it's bad for resale, and at least would try for the double faucet, large sink solution, but I had a bit of trouble figuring exactly what your said...so I want to ask if there is a typo? You are currently "noT" trying to separate the shower and tub? Or you are "noW" trying and that's why you haven't the space? I ask this because I went from a master with just a tiny shower (less than 3' each way) to a master with both a shower (not huge, not small...3' x I think 5.5') and a tub, and I got two vanities out of the deal. I did this by using an unusual shaped tub, an Americh Japanese soaking tub. It's very tall, but only 40x40, so it allowed me the extra 34 or so inches I needed to give DH his own sink and cabinets. (Otherwise the poor man wasn't going to have a place to work in) :oP

The vanity is 65" long. The marble top is 66.5", with overhang on one side and no overhang on the other side (wall). On the left side (no wall) there is 11", then a 14.5" sink opening, then 17" between sinks, then 9" between the right sink and the wall.

The medicine cabinets and lights are spaced over the 66.5" span of the vanity top, with each medicine cabinet lined squarely over each sink. From left to right, there is a 8.5" space for a light, then a 20" cabinets, then 11" space for a light, then 20" cabinet, then 6" space for a light.

On each side, the difference between the left and right sides is because of the 1.5" marble overhang on only 1 side. It is not noticible.

It is tight fit overall, but works. It would have been a lot easier with smaller medicine cabinets!
