Wolf Range - Delayed Ignition

Hi Folks,

Maybe someone here could help me out. We're looking at a used R364G and noticed when running it through it's paces that it takes a (way too) long time for the oven to light. So I immediately thought of the past recalls, but this critter doesn't fit into either of them (one way back in 2001 and more recently in 2009 (I think)). And there have also been some reports of similar issues outside of those recalls.

I was hoping that someone might have some experience and understanding as to what the fix was/has been for these issues? Was Wolf simply replacing the oven ignitor or was there something else at fault?

Anyone have experience having a Wolf oven repaired due to delayed ignition?

How long is too long? My Wolf range oven takes a while to light, longer than my previous oven, but I thought that was normal for the glow-bar type of ignitor.

Hi Jelly,

Thanks for replying. I'll give you two answers, a) greater than 60-seconds which is what Wolf support told me is the maximum that it should take, and b) greater than 3-minutes which is about what this one seems to take. Although I didn't/haven't actually timed it to be honest.

Does that match what your experience has been? I appreciate your input.

When I started my research for my kitchen remodel (about three months ago), my initial thoughts were strongly towards Thermador (for the range and refrigerator), and Wolf (I eliminated Viking due to quality concerns, and I hadn't yet heard of many others like BS, American, DCS, Aga, etc.). Then, I noted that Thermador doesn't offer all gas or open burners, and I better understood that my use of the oven didn't require the electronic functions (nor did I want the risk of having them burn out), and I thus eliminated Thermador even though I love the look (but function is much more important to me than style and looks) and it's star-burner shape does make it probably the best of the sealed burner options (ignoring output) IMO. If one wants to be a better cook, and understand the need of function over looks, then I can't see how one can pick Thermador, given the choice. I would pick BS or Wolf all gas instead. I think you might benefit from watching some of the Bluestar cooking videos Trevor has made (http://www.bluestar-ranges.com/Home_Page.html) - even though they mostly compare BS and Wolf, they serve as a nice educational source for learning more about what to look for in a range.

A few years ago there were supposedly bad ignitors used by a number of brands of high end ranges - to the best of my knowledge they were replaced by the manufacturers and now a different, better kind are in use. In my case on my DCS range, the ignitors would continue to click after the burners were lit. Since the ingnitors were replaced I haven't had the problem. The repair person explained to me that the old ones weren't the correct height and didn't always detect when the flame was actually on. I remember reading that Bluestars may have had a different problem with the ignitors spontaneously clicking even when the range was turned off - you can check the Bluestar threads to see how that was resolved. I agree with the previous poster - if your problem is just with the ignitors and I would start with getting them replaced rather than trying to rebuild the whole cooktop unless you have other problems.

On my Wolf stove top one igniter would fire a few sparks sometimes when I pushed in the knob, but any sparks would stop as soon as I began rotating the knob towards letting gas flow. I cleaned the area, which wasn't too dirty then I noticed that the little metal "clip" that wraps around the white ceramic igniter was all the way at the bottom of the igniter and may have been touching the edge of the inner burner. So maybe it was short circuiting. With the edge of a flathead screwdriver I was able to wedge that metal clip up towards the middle of the igniter, which is where all of them were on the other burners. The igniter now works perfectly. So it seems it was the clip going down to the bottom and making contact with the burner metal.

I’ve had my Wolf all gas (propane) now going on 20 years. It’s a 48” with two ovens. It’s been doing that the whole time. The gasket on a gas oven is not the tight seal that you get with an electric oven. I understand that to many owners the constant cycling on and off could be an annoyance. I at one time bought an oven thermometer just to see how accurate my oven temp was. For 20 years now those two ovens have been spot on for accuracy. From what I was told you can’t have a tight seal on a gas oven, so it has to cycle on and off for temperature accuracy. I had to replace the burner in the larger oven once after 18 years of hard work. Took me about an hour to do it, my hands took 3 days to get clean again.

I would say that mine ingnites somewhere close to that one-minute range.

It is my understanding that Wolf switched to spark ignitors in their new version of this range because they are supposed to be more durable (longer lasting) than the glow-type. However, I preferred the glow-type because they are silent and don't make that annoying clicking noise whenever they re-ignite. I figured having to replace the ignitor more often was a small price to pay for not having that annoyance. My range is fairly new, so I haven't had any issues.

Have you already purchased this range, or just considering it? If you haven't already bought it, I would ask the current owner to replace the ignitor before purchasing.

If the oven is over five years old, the thermostat (poor function or badly positioned), igniter (= glowbar) and safety valve are usually prime suspects.
The fault can be subtle. May show correct temperature on a thermometer in an empty oven but lack the heat density to cook properly. Long warmup and cooking times with underdone results using test cake mixes and cook from frozen items are typical.

Thanks folks, all really helpful stuff. Yes, trying to factor in something for the repair. A bit of a crap shoot of course, but that comes with this territory.

Slower ignition is most likely the Glow Bar Igniter starting to wear out. The igniter will look like it's glowing fine but it is no longer pulling the 3.2 amps required to open the gas safety valve.
The igniter generally wears out in 4 to 7 years depending on usage. Typically the igniter is aproximately $50 - $70 for the part plus whatever labor to install it.
