Is there a reason you want to get rid of XP? If no, why not dual-boot? Don't expect your wireless to work in the Live CD. If you know what kind of wireless card you have, It'd be a good idea to do some research to find out if it's supported. Also if a wired connection is available while installing Ubuntu that is highly recommended. I have two installs of 10.04 running on two Dell desktops. After installing, go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to see if any additional drivers for your video or wireless are available. I discovered after both installs that the audio was muted, so I had to locate the audio control and increase it. I've had no issues with dvd drive or display. Any printer I connected was recognized automatically.

Terrapots do you use Zonealarm as your firewall and ar you running XP SP2? On another form this was an issue for a number of us for a very long time and there seemed to be nothing to correct it. Then another member swapped from Zonealarm to Comodo - problem solved. As soon as she posted her findings I swapped to Comodo too and my problems have disappeared. Comodo is free. Like you I blamed and swapped the router - 3 different ones - to no avail. Kept using the Start/Run ipconfig bit for momentary benefits, unplugged the router and/or the modem with no long term benefits too. Zonealarm note for others. There is nothing wrong with Zonealarm for the big majority of users but for a few this has been an issue.

Please pardon this quick deviation. I've read this forum, off and on, for about 5 years. "majickmann" seemed familiar, but figured that it is German for "magic man", which is a long-time favorite song by Heart. Then, I realized that for the very reason above, I remember a majickmann that used to post to this forum. Are you the same person? I took your advice, ravencajun, to read the AVG posts. And, I must say that was an abrasive post by majickmann. So, majickmann, you certainly could have been nicer. "Blindly" was definitely crossing the line. But, I don't see what is wrong with the rest of his posts, including the two posts above. They have been polite and informative. In your post above, I had understood the links are to installation instructions for Kubuntu and Ubuntu 8.04. And, that "the distro number versions are out dated now since there is a new version". It seems very clear to me that there is a newer version Ubuntu (8.10), so I would want to download it. And, I could use the tutorials even though they were for the out dated version. Majickmann's reply was polite and provided an explanation about the two version of Ubuntu. While I understood what he said, just like on the Ubuntu pages, this is where majickmann probably should have explained the meaning of long term support. Because I did not understand why anyone would want to install an out dated version. So, I turned to my husband, the IT guru. (He really is.) Basically, my husband said that many people want the long term support version because the environment is stable and is supported for 3 or 5 years. That would be me. I don't want to "upgrade" every 6 months. The other people, for varying reasons, want to be "on the bleeding edge" or want the improvements associated with the newer version. So, they may upgrade or install the newest version as soon as it's available. So, the 8.04 version is actually the newest Long Term Support version while 8.10 is, for lack of a better term, the newest bleeding edge version. I'm confused with your last reply, for example, "I no where stated that the older versions were no longer available." You certainly did not make that statement, but, neither did majickmann. I hope each of you take my comments to heart. They are not meant to belittle anyone. Again, I find myself apologizing for the long winded post. Interesting reads and emotions here. I'm not an AT&T subscriber, user or stock holder. We use Verizon for our cell and hard wire phone provider. Anyway, a router works by taking the internet signal and splitting it into different addresses within your home network. In order to be able to do this the router must be receiving the signal to begin with. Regular routers receive their signals from modems (cable or satellite). If you are going to be grabbing a wireless signal similar to the way a cell phone receives you need a mobile modem:router. So, to answer your first question, AT&T is being honest with you. You need an AT&T mobile modem:router to receive the AT&T wireless signal, just like you need an AT&T compatible cell phone to receive an AT&T cell phone signal. The answer to your second question is no. Your D-link wireless router can't receive the wireless AT&T signal so it will not work. AT&T is not the only game in town, so to speak, when it comes to wireless phone and internet service. If you don't like them and/or don't trust them what are you doing using them?
