Is there a reason you want to get rid of XP? If no, why not dual-boot? Don't expect your wireless to work in the Live CD. If you know what kind of wireless card you have, It'd be a good idea to do some research to find out if it's supported. Also if a wired connection is available while installing Ubuntu that is highly recommended. I have two installs of 10.04 running on two Dell desktops. After installing, go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to see if any additional drivers for your video or wireless are available. I discovered after both installs that the audio was muted, so I had to locate the audio control and increase it. I've had no issues with dvd drive or display. Any printer I connected was recognized automatically.

Terrapots do you use Zonealarm as your firewall and ar you running XP SP2? On another form this was an issue for a number of us for a very long time and there seemed to be nothing to correct it. Then another member swapped from Zonealarm to Comodo - problem solved. As soon as she posted her findings I swapped to Comodo too and my problems have disappeared. Comodo is free. Like you I blamed and swapped the router - 3 different ones - to no avail. Kept using the Start/Run ipconfig bit for momentary benefits, unplugged the router and/or the modem with no long term benefits too. Zonealarm note for others. There is nothing wrong with Zonealarm for the big majority of users but for a few this has been an issue.

it is really worth it zep. Do you have linux at all on your pcs? I really am loving it and rarely use my windows boxes anymore. I really recommend Mepis for a really easy to use distro. Most say Ubuntu or Kubuntu and they are good distros I prefer Kubuntu since I like KDE but of all I have tried I go back to Mepis, there is a brand new version in the works right now, it should be out with in a few months. there is a lite version of Mepis called AntiX not sure if it fits on a thumb drive or not. I'm not an expert so probably can't help but... I think you have enough speed you shouldn't even need to let it buffer, but know how to do so, so it's probably not Internet speed. Your system seems fine specification-wise. To me anyway. I don't think or know much about video cards but I wouldn't think it would be the physical card, but I don't really know. My wild guess would be the driver. :) This is what mine shows when I go to "System settings"--->"Additional Drivers": If it were me, I'd try a different driver if there's any listed there. Maybe you already have? Other than that, I don't have a clue. I'm running 12.04 and youtube's and other videos play fine for me. If someone else here doesn't have the answer, there's always the Ubuntu forum. Just a thought.
