considering mirrored bathroom wall

I am considering mirroring an 8'W wall from the top of the vanity to the ceiling, about 55' H. I've never purchased wall mirror. I also am guessing I would want it installed in three separate panels of flat plate mirror. is there a certain thickness or grade of mirror that I should request? I also plan on mounting sconce's on the mirror on each side of the vanity. Does the installer cut the hole for the wiring after installation?

Any holes in the mirror should be cut during fabrication time - when the mirror is being made.

At work, the wash room mirrors extend from ~ 5' to the ceiling (8 - 9'). The washbasin area is > 8', so the mirror is segmented vertically.

There was an episode of HomeTime where they briefly showed the installation of a custom wall mirror with holes cut out for the wall sconces.

Thanks everyone for all of your comments. I'll take some photos asap so that anyone who has ideas can offer them. We really aren't capable (anymore) of doing any of the work ourselves. I myself, have physical problems which would prevent me from doing so. My BF is just not detail oriented enough (as I have learned from watching him this past year since we took possession of the house). Seriously, he tries hard and in a pinch can take care of things but honestly it's like his eyes don't work right or something and then he gets all hurt feelings when I have to point out what is wrong; so it's just not worth it. Thankfully, because of all the work already done on the house I have people I trust. We do have another small bathroom - but it's only a Powder Room but, at least it is somewhere to use a toilet and wash up in a pinch. The shower, as I mentioned, will not be touched since it was recently redone. We don't intend to reconfigure anything for the most part - plumbing will remain in place (except for moving the tub's plumbing over a foot or so - there is room, the wall is long) and while I would really love a double sink I suspect it would mean changing the entire layout of the room including re-doing that shower; which means $2000 already spent down the tubes which would just gall me; so I'll live with the one. It's only two of us living here anyway. At least I don't have a desire to make it a show piece. It's not a fancy house, I don't need a spa bathroom. I just want something up-to-date and which works well (I put a lot of thought into my kitchen; also not a show-stopper but one which "fit" into the existing style and materials of my Craftsman home. I intend to do something similar for the bathroom.

ThatÂs what I was afraid of. I didnÂt want to put ideas in peopleÂs headsÂbut that is the reservation I have. I think having to use it on one side of the wall, asymmetrically, doesnÂt work. I was SO sure it would look great, and be really like the finishing touch in this room. Darn! The thickness, bulkiness, of it bothers me too, in that place. Too much mass. I thought, before I tried it, that it would balance the weight of the solid looking vanity. Instead it just makes it look like too much weight on the left side of the room and nothing on the right. Having to one side bothers me with the light fixture too, and I love that light. It doesnÂt show well in the photos, but is a stained glass repro I ordered from a craftsman lighting company, in a custom size. The mirror is discontinued, so I canÂt get another to balance it better. It doesnÂt look right centered on the big mirror either. Too odd when you are standing in front of the vanity. Sigh. I love this mirror. Buying this one when it went on clearance was what made me decide to have a craftsman bathroom in the first place! (Well, that and it opens off a craftsman family room.) I have one open wall on that room, where I used to have a framed picture. IÂll try propping it up there. The craftsman family room already has a mirror.

If you have a curb, you will have the cracks develop there, too. and where the walls meet the floor. Anywhere where two different materials meet or where one surface meets another that is in a different direction (known as "change of plane"). My contractor still grouts such places, too. But I did a solid surface shower that he could not do wrong. I am keeping an eye on the place where the floor meets the shower pan, all other places are in dry areas. So there it is just cosmetic. I would guess that water can get behind your tile with those cracks. If properly waterproofed it is fine, but if not, I would get to this as soon as you can. A lot of shower builders do not use waterproofing, even though it is now required. If you do a search on this forum for "Shower waterproof," you can see many discussions about it and learn what is and is not waterproof. (Redguard yes, Durock no, for instance.)

Do folks consider ceiling height when mounting bathroom sconces?

Well there'll be a ceiling mounted light which should theoretically cover the whole room. This then should be decorative but also will provide some coverage to the sides of my face. There are significant height difference across our family. I was hoping to find a one-size-fits most height, that also looks good!

I just did exactly the same thing--8 foot long by 55" tall with two sconce cutouts. We did it as one piece. There is no reason you have to divide it as long as you can get it into your home. We got our piece into our elevator so if you live in a house I don't see why it should be a problem. They just have two guys there to install it. A mirror looks so much better as one piece, in my opinion. Davidro1 is correct--the holes are made by the fabricator. Make sure you give them the sconces first so they can measure the hole.

It's good to know I have the option of one piece. You had the holes cut for the sconce's pre cut or where they done on site?
What did they charge you for the install? Did they use a metal J channel for mounting. I'm guessing it would be best to have all my other fixtures I'm replacing installed first, such as the vanity.

The mirror always goes last, if possible. When I was ready for the mirror, I called my local glass and mirror place. They came to measure, had it fabricated and installed, all within a week. When they came to measure, I gave them the sconces so they could measure the rosette and see how the sconce installed on the wall. It was all one price. I don't know exactly how much because I had other things done at the same time, but the mirror and two full length back of the door mirrors (also measured and installed) were about $950 with tax.

Mine is 11' long and goes from the top of the short vanity backsplash to about 1' below the 9' ceiling.

One thing to be sure of with such a long mirror is that there is a way to get it INTO your space. It might not fit if they have to make a couple of 90 degree turns in a hallway or the entrance to the bathroom. They will be carrying it in with the suction cups and will also need a straight shot with no projections on the side walls when they mount it.
