Mullion doors for cabinets
Comments (4)Not sure on the acronym is RFT are we talking RTF (Rigid Thermal Foil) or thermofoil or whatever the next manufacturer is calling it (Kraftmaid calls it laminate?) - who can keep them straight. Bit of a bad word here (which ever one you use) but my Mom used it in her new kitchen and our experience cross shopping product was good - we chose a moulding from another company in the same colour and the match was perfect. I would recommend taking in a door and checking it against a store sample as there is some variation depending on where the manufacturer buys the foil product. You can't cut out door centres with RTF doors the foil will shred so new doors is the way to go. Your other option is to go with unfinished doors (usually also available through the refacing programs at the box stores) and paint match. We took the glass out of a door and used the door to frame an open shelf and where the gasket was to hold the glass was just raw MDF so we just colour matched some paint and applied it. Not as prominent an area as the face of the door but if yout test the sheen it should work. If you order an unfinished MDF door you have to start with an oil based primer to get a smooth finish. I don't really think you can see the area without sticking your head inside the cabinet - anything before where the glass would be is thermo but what's behind it is painted....See Moreglass doors with mullions, shelves don't line up
Comments (8)I am linking a thread on this same subject; it contains pics which are helpful. There are some differences of opinion there. Also, the lining-up issue may depend upon where you are standing (near, far, off to the side), so the shelves may line up with the mullions at times, but then move a few feet, and it no longer looks lined up. I had this problem in my kitchen too. It drove me so crazy (I am neurotic about things lining up), while it wouldn't bother other people whatsoever. I ended up replacing my 4 mullioned glass cabinet doors for clear glass doors. I had the clear glass edges bevelled for visual interest, but I was glad to do away with the lining-up issue. I talk about it on the linked thread, with some people agreeing with me and others not agreeing with me. Comments (16)buehl, didn't know I had to turn the wooden shelves over. Crap, that's going to be a lot of work- every shelf - every year!?! I will have glass shelves in my garden windows, alcove, and was planning on putting them in the cabinet over my microwave- so that won't be such a huge task. Is it only for shelves that have heavy loads on them? What about pullouts? You can't flip those over cuz they have sides. No one flips over drawers... Has anyone else ever heard of this? I will be having two cupboards with glass inserts- one 42" and one 30". Both will be for dishes, glasses, and mugs. Good excuse to get some new 'accessories' that'll look perty, and maybe give me incentive not to get too cluttery. I have bevelled glass in mullions in a corner cupboard in my dining room and I love that look. I store my good china and glasses and vases in that cupboard. My longterm plan is to replace the plain glass (which I don't even have yet) in my kitchen cupboards with custom made leaded glass with bevels. There are a number of sellers on eBay who seem to make some fairly reasonably prices stained glass panels....See MoreFor those with glass doors, do you line up shelves with mullions?
Comments (25)For me, this is where function trumps form. I need my kitchen cabinets with glass (all for dishes or glassware) to work with what I'm putting IN the cabinets themselves. I do not want to be limited by having to have the shelves the same distance apart when what I'm putting in these cabinets doesn't work for me that way. In my LR, I worked for a week getting my bookshelves, that include some antique wooden boxes and antique porcelain, properly lined up, balanced and symmetrical. So long as the books were in the cabinet by general type (fiction/classics/non-fiction), it was important that the shelves look "right". But my kitchen? NO! It's a working kitchen and it simply must work for me. In the end, the shelves are level across but it took multiple times moving these shelves around to get just the right balance and have them still hold what I need on the proper shelf....See MoreArdita
