For those with glass doors, do you line up shelves with mullions?

to those who line their shelves
Comments (27)This very old discussion came up in a search as I was hunting for non-adhesive cork shelf liners. I don't want to stick anything to my brand-new cabinetry after a remodel and also want to protect it. I've been through clear vinyl with ridges (yes, collects gunk as noted in another comment), a slightly cushiony Con-Tac product (pretty okay but I don't want the white contrast I used to have), and cork, which became my favorite for its natural tone and soft landing for items placed on it. I tried stick-down cork but it damaged the surface underneath when I placed it slightly askew and needed to straighten so I'm going for non-adhesive. I tried getting the adhesive cork and just not peeling off the backing but then it's slippery on the back. I've landed on rolls of cork from https://www.widgetco.com/ for a couple of reasons: They come in multiple widths and thicknesses beyond what I can get at the big-box stores and other online sources, and the price per foot works out to the same or less than adhesive cork rolls I found on Amazon for what appears to be better quality. Some of the reviews of thinner cork rolls on Amazon said it was brittle, came damaged, wasn't good quality. I'm getting 1/8" thickness (1/16" and 1/4" also available). I'll unroll carefully and lightly dampen (advice I got from a review) and weight it to flatten before installing. Cost is better than the Williams Sonoma and Ikea, both of which have limited sizes available as I write this....See MoreMullions on some glass doors and not on others?
Comments (25)I cringe at taggie's picture....doesn't need to be a 3 or 4 yr old child....my DH would be more than apt to knock that ladder leg right into that glass pane! To me, it's just not wise to put glass under a counter where people's feet and knees are. If you want to hide the books, then hide them behind solid doors. If you are going to keep them neat and don't mind displaying them, then leave the bookshelves open. But glass IMO is just an accident waiting to happen, esp when it's under a counter where it's not directly obvious to your eye. At the very least, if you want something like glass that is obscuring, then at least look into plexiglass...maybe get a frosted look.... My cookbooks are in open shelving on my island...we thought we'd never have anyone sitting there as there is no overhang on the ends, but when the party gets large enough, someone pulls a stool up and they sit. If there were glass there, yikes! IAC, I agree with the others that the muntins should match within the space....See MoreDo you think mullions look ok in a 13 inch stacked cabinet?
Comments (19)I have an 18 inch cabinet stacked over a 33 inch with 5 inch crown. Our ceilings are just shy of 9 feet. Here is a photo of the boxes installed. Hopefully the doors will be going in tomorrow. I am a bit OCD on having things match up, so I personally wouldn't choose to have muntins in a single cabinet. Maybe consider doing the entire 36 inch cabinet in glass? I am too messy to do that, but in other's kitchens when used as a focal point it can look nice to break up the wall of wood. I tend to agree with the previous posters that a 13 inch may be too small. Once you add the door frames, the amount of glass showing will be tiny....See MoreMullion Glass Door anyone? Pics please
Comments (16)buehl, didn't know I had to turn the wooden shelves over. Crap, that's going to be a lot of work- every shelf - every year!?! I will have glass shelves in my garden windows, alcove, and was planning on putting them in the cabinet over my microwave- so that won't be such a huge task. Is it only for shelves that have heavy loads on them? What about pullouts? You can't flip those over cuz they have sides. No one flips over drawers... Has anyone else ever heard of this? I will be having two cupboards with glass inserts- one 42" and one 30". Both will be for dishes, glasses, and mugs. Good excuse to get some new 'accessories' that'll look perty, and maybe give me incentive not to get too cluttery. I have bevelled glass in mullions in a corner cupboard in my dining room and I love that look. I store my good china and glasses and vases in that cupboard. My longterm plan is to replace the plain glass (which I don't even have yet) in my kitchen cupboards with custom made leaded glass with bevels. There are a number of sellers on eBay who seem to make some fairly reasonably prices stained glass panels....See MoreHillside House
