Do You Think Upper Cabinets Will Be Making A Comeback Soon?
Comments (53)As the owner of a kitchen with no uppers at all, my answer to the OP is that upper cabinets they won't be making a comeback because they've never gone anywhere -- except for those of us who don't care for them. I have open shelving, open plateracks and open space. We had uppers in the previous kitchen and I couldn't wait to get rid of them. Now I don't need to climb to get anything and I don't have doors opening into my face. No dust or grease collects on anything that's out because I use it and therefore I wash it. OTOH, I don't have any "displays," gimcracks, or cats. Many here find animals walking around on kitchen counters to be normal and endearing but I don't. Basically, I don't see a need for the tone of dismissiveness about kitchens without uppers -- as if it's some elite plot that "normal" people wouldn't be involved in. It isn't useful or informed. All of us have opinions, naturally. Trends come and go. But if someone was to air views about all the look-alike white kitchens, or how ridiculous it was for someone to put a crystal chandelier in a gas-stove kitchen because it would get greasy, or snipe at less than perfectly matched counters and backsplashes, it wouldn't be any more helpful than this thread is. My mother had a great saying about overdone houses (or kitchens for that matter). She used to say "you never want your house to look like your life began the day you met your decorator." And, since Mom is gone (may she rest in peace) and since many of us aren't in a position to hire a decorator (though nice if you can) let me rephrase for modern times: You don't want your kitchen to look like the last magazines, website or blog you read. Or the last picture you saw on GW. Or, maybe you do....See MoreWhat do you think?--Dishes in base cabinet or base drawers
Comments (22)dekeoboe I'm sorry, but I'm not sure where I found that particular picture any more. It was saved in my "storage" bookmarks but we decided not to use it b/c we decided to keep our dishes in upper cabs. It is possible that it was a UK only product b/c I know I found a bunch of things they have there that we don't that I am having shipped to cousins in Scotland and then sent over here. However, I did find several versions of it at US sites: Here is one: http://www.woodhollowcabinets.com/show.meta/cabinetaccessories Scroll down to "PLATE HOLDER INSERT IN ROLLOUT" I know this company is willing to sell just the insert/organizer pieces separately because I am in the process of ordering the OXO organizer from them (to get a general idea on price, the OXO thing I am getting from them is $225 inc. utensils). They also sell some pieces on eBay and have perfect feedback. You could order their version of it from them (disclaimer- I haven't actually finalized my order yet or received my item so I cannot attest to anything myself about their quality) Alternatively, a version is also available at: http://www.acornkitchens.com/Collections.aspx?name=Transitional Scroll down to " Drawer Accessories Vertical plate holder pullout" You could contact them to see if they would sell you one as well. (I know nothing about them, other than I found this on google) Hope that helps!...See MoreMy cabinet plans - what do you think?
Comments (7)Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear that others agree about worrying less about some of the symmetry and getting wider (more functional) cabinets/drawers instead. :) wannaknow- My kitchen is about 13'x18'. It opens to a dinnette that's about 9'x15'. I will also have a wetbar and dropzone nearby- that's why neither of those zones are shown above in the cabinet layout. I'll attach my kitchen area floor plan from the builder below. Just in case you're interested. :) prariemom- I actually have a pull-out trash/recycle in the island across from where you suggested it by the sink. That way I can easily access it for my prep trash and clean up trash. That was rhome's brilliant suggestion. :) herbflavor- I was already writing WAY TOO MUCH in my original post. LOL. My mother makes stained glass, and she has offered to make me a panel for the top transom. I just need to sketch something out and figure out colors, and I'm sure it will be beautiful. That window faces due south, so I'm sure the colors from the stained glass will be beautiful in the kitchen. This is why I requested a transom for the kitchen. :) I haven't met with the finish carpenter, but my builder assures me he will do something nice with the hood. I'm a bit nervous about it too. My builder's description sounded much nicer than the rendering looks. Eeek. :-/ taggie- thanks so much! I hope we spend a lot of time in our kitchen. After talking more this morning, DH and I have already figured out several places where we want to switch from 3 to 4 drawers. I had worried about it at the design meeting and then forgotten until you mentioned it again. Unfortunately all the cabinet options our builder gave us are framed. Oh well. lavender_lass- I'm so glad to hear you like it! The KD pointed out the issues with the glass too. The house windows will have grids so we are going to use solid panels in the cabinets. I'm still hoping to paint some beadboard for the background of the glass cabinets, but I'm going to wait a while for that. We're getting "glass-ready" cabinets and then heading to a stained glass store to pick out the glass. I have no idea what I might fall in love with there. As I mentioned above, I am a bit nervous about the range hood as well. My builder promised it would look nice. Taking a deep breath about that one. wiemom- I'll have to search for some pics of your kitchen! I'm really hoping the layout works for us. Glad to hear you like the way yours is set up. :)...See MoreI think the mullion doors might have to go...sigh!
Comments (12)millworkman "MUNTINS." So I have never heard EITHER term before, and your comment made me curious. I have learned my "something new" today. :-) http://mgerwingarch.com/m-gerwing/2011/01/18/muntin-v-mullion-architects-glossary Muntins are often confused with "mullions" (which separate complete window units), and "astragals" (which close the gap between two leaves of a double door). Many companies use the term "grille" when referring to a decorative structure of wood or other material that is put over a single pane of glass to make it look as if there were muntins separating multiple panes of glass. In the UK, the term "grille" tends to be used only when there are bars sandwiched within the insulated glass glazing unit, and not stuck to the outsides of it. A mullion is a heavy vertical or horizontal member between adjoining window units. Muntins are the narrow strips of wood that divide the individual panes of glass in a traditional sash. In the case of so-called "simulated divided lites," grilles resembling muntins are either sandwiched between double glass panes or else installed over the outer surface of the glass to give a divided look....See Moredermnp
