CD Won't Eject

I have a Compaq, almost 3 years old with a DVD-RW Drive and CD Drive. The DVD (top unit) won't eject/open. I have hit the button on the unit and gone to My Computer clicked on Eject This Disc, but it won't open. I have a feeling my 10 yr old niece may have a CD jammed it it. Any ideas on how I can get the CD out and unit functioning w/o taking the computer apart?

There's usually a paper clip hole on the front.
For inserting a paper clip to release a latch or something with a press.
Not that I've ever had to use one.

Mikie, Thanks. Never knew about the paper clip hole. Worked like a charm, was able to open the DVD but it wasn't jammed after all. Seems as if it just quit working. Won't open by pressing the button even w/o a disc in it. Appreciate your help. Mare

Do you know the name of the file that is missing? Are you sure that is the only one? Did you get more than one recovery CD when you bought the computer? Perhaps there is a second CD with those needed files and you are trying the wrong CD. During start up with the CD in the drawer does the CD player activity light appear for quite a while suggesting the CD is being read? You might consider putting the CD in the computer you are using, stop the auto start as it occurs, then use Windows Explorer to verify you have the right CD. When you entered the BIOS you tried to change the sequence to CD then hard drive then floppy. Did you hit F10 to save and exit? If not then were you prompted to save the changes and did you follow along? Seems like you may have exited without saving the changes.

I just replaced the dead cd-burner drive on one of my computers, I got a lite-on DVD burner drive that does pretty much everything from newegg for like $39. There are good prices out there. I also have an external usb cd-burner that I can connect to any of my computers by usb to have an added cd-burner, I found it on a clearance rack at an electronics store for around $15. If you do not want to dig into the machine to take the old one out and install the new one you may want to get one of the external usb ones. Replacing the internal one is not difficult but does take a bit of knowledge, it is more difficult than say adding memory. Some times the doors can get off the tracks and on occasion they can be taken out and worked on and fixed but that is a big maybe! It is a good idea to never force things! Also if you use the paperclip in the little hole in the front of the drive it is usually advised to have the pc turned off and unplugged to do that, I know not everyone does that but on the directions that come with them it does say that. Guess the risk of something electrical happening is the reason.

Do a complete power reset. Remove the power plug(s) from the radio or disconnect the battery from the car for 1 minute, then plug or connect the power, switch ON your CD player and click on the eject button or whatever you normally do to eject the CD. This sometimes works with some CD units.

I forgot to add that the CD player quit working when I accidently tried to play a DVD that I thought was a CD. Would that have caused the problem?

Sometimes, after you have manually opened the drive, it will "fix" itself with a reboot.

Reboot the computer with the drive all the way open, and see if it closes. That usually fixes the problem.

I have a long thin metal cake tester. That is the slickest thing ever for opening a stuck drive !

Mikie, I just tried your reboot suggestion but no dice. Anything else I can try? Really appreciate your help.

Go to My Computer and right click on the CD drive. A drop down menu will appear with "eject" as an option. Select it and see if the drive opens.

I might look in Device Manager for signs of errors ...and maybe open the case up too - unplug the cables and reconnect them.
Could be one of the wires has come loose. If you're lucky.

While the case is open prehaps clean out some of the dust and maybe check most other easily reached plug in connections too.

I'm not the original poster but I had the same problem so read this thread to see if there was a solution. I tried as suggested inserting the paper clip and rebooting. Worked!!!! Thank you so much for this advice!!
