If the sounds are coming from the speakers then it might be just when the computer looks for updates online for the various programs. If it comes from the tower itself then perhaps it is as the hard drive activates, mine is a noisy hard drive but the particular model is known for that.

Keeping a computer running or not is purely a personal choice, neither way is right or wrong necessarily. I ran mine for years when they were doing some distributed computing trying to find a cure for cancer. Never hurt them at all, just the hydro bill. Still run mostly 24/7 through laziness I s'pose.

Wouldn't hurt to hang on to the box for a while, once you are satisfied the computer is running good than you might decide to get rid of the box.

I'm not sure which one it is coming from.. never noticed till I put the speakers on. I never hear it when the computer is being used. I guess I'll have to turn it off at nite as I wake up easy. I don't have to worry about the lite bill as it is furnished where I live but still don't like to waste it.

my speakers make noise if I have my cell phone any where in the room near my computer so it could be something in the area feeding into the speaker, wireless phone etc.

My computers stay on 24/7 unless I am leaving town or there is a storm.

It is easy to knock down the box so it is flat and fits under a bed or behind something so it does not take up so much room, I generally keep mine for a while I have never heard of them sending you a box.

when mine made a clicking sound the hard drive was shot, but mine would not boot.

I have to go with Vala on this one. On one of my past systems when the H/D started clicking it subsequently failed. To be on the safe side backup everything that is important to you.

My speakers whines to beat the band when the Nook is in this room and it handshakes with the 3G network.

As far as on versus off it has always been a perpetual argument. Kind of like Ford opposed to Chevy.

Today's systems can handle being left on all the time. If you estimate system and peripheral down time at 10 hours a day at 3 cents an hour over a 30 day month the cash savings on your electric bill is $9.00 a month.

Sugar, you need to determine just where these sounds are coming from. Just decide if it is from the speakers or the tower - assuming this is a desktop computer.

Isn't this a brand new computer perhaps less than 10 days old? If so I would be loath to suspect the hard drive failure. Not to suggest it cannot be that but seems unlikely in my opinion.

On the 24/7 bit a Windows 7 computer goes into almost shut down after a given period of inactivity. All open data is stored and there are no fans running.

I have paid closer attention to the click or popping sound my computer is making. It seems to do it when it comes out of the sleep mode but not every time. . It started right after I went to bed last nite. I unplugged the speakers & never heard it again. It even did it with speakers just muted. I didn't have the speakers plugged in till a few days ago & that's when it started.
I may call HP support later today & see what they have to say. Sure hope I don't have to send it back.

I called HP & she said the problem was in the speakers..I went ahead & ordered HP speakers from them. I had a time since she was in India & couldn't understand me any better than I could her. I think we finally got everything right.

Some people use sleep mode always.
Windows computers like to be fresh started every day or two or three.

Though it can't hurt anything, isn't the adage of starting Windows regularly a thing of the past? I believe since the release of XP perhaps? It sure was necessary for quality operations in Win98 and prior.

This Vista system hasn't been off since Christmas and has only been rebooted when mandated by Windows updates or application installs/uninstalls.
