Computer making strange sound

Just lately I'm hearing a really strange sound on my computer - like a squeaky door closing, then sort of a slamming noise.

Is this good, bad or ???

Either it haunted or you might have a fan motor going bad.

Sometimes opening up the case while the cpu is unplugged and blowing the excess dust out can help. You need to look into the sounds because it could cause your computer to overheat and fail.

And even worse if it is not a fan it could be the hard drive starting to fail, some will get weird noises prior to failing. IF that happens your info will be stuck on a dead drive. Any time a pc starts making unusual noise it is time to take a trip to the pc doctor LOL

You do not mention a make and model? Go to the manufacturers site and search for updated drivers being sure you use the correct model of computer. Once you download and save your audio drivers click Start click Control panel click Device manager in the new window look down the left side for the audio click the small arrow beside "Sound, video and game controllers" to drop down the files RIGHT click on the appropriate file then click Properties in the new window click the Drivers tab click "update driver...." A new window will appear, follow along. It will offer to search for the drivers you downloaded but will probably offer you the chance to point to where you saved the file. Not sure but you may be told to reboot to complete.

If the sounds are coming from the speakers then it might be just when the computer looks for updates online for the various programs. If it comes from the tower itself then perhaps it is as the hard drive activates, mine is a noisy hard drive but the particular model is known for that. Keeping a computer running or not is purely a personal choice, neither way is right or wrong necessarily. I ran mine for years when they were doing some distributed computing trying to find a cure for cancer. Never hurt them at all, just the hydro bill. Still run mostly 24/7 through laziness I s'pose. Wouldn't hurt to hang on to the box for a while, once you are satisfied the computer is running good than you might decide to get rid of the box.

Hi samtom, If you are being redirected to sites that you are not intentionally clicking on, that is a strong possibility that it is due to the Redirect virus. Please follow the advice of zep516 above and have a professional that is trained to remove malware help you. This virus changes registry values and DOES NOT specifically target Google. Google just happens to be the Search Engine of choice by more people than any other search engine, though it does target Firefox. You can join LandzDown and the trained team of experts will be more then happy to help you. I have provided the link below. Thanks everyone. I will try blowing the dust off first- if that doesn't work I'll just hafta' shut 'er down; just got a $23,000. hospital bill- anything that isn't a necessitiy goes to the back burner...w-a-a-y back.

Hi grittymitts,
This might be too obvious to be of any help, but, do you have AOL? One of the sounds in AOL is when someone leaves your buddy list and it sounds like a squeaky door and a door slamming.

Yes, I have AOL. Had a friend send IM then get off line & that seems to be what happens.

I have never had AOL and had no idea it made that kind of sound, that one is now filed away in my "if you hear strange sounds" memory! LOL
