No sound from computer

I have lost sound on my computer, this happened after I reinstalled a printer program. My printer started printing from left to right, rather than up and down. I was advised to remove printer programs, use the supplied disc and reinstall. I did this and it fixed printer problem, however next day I found i had no sound. When I good to sounds, speakers and select volume, the volume control indicator is on low zero, however I cannot get it to high light so I can move the volume indicator to a higher setting. I know the speakers are ok because I tried them on another computer and they work. My trouble shoting wizard says you sound device does not work call manufactuer. My computer is a Dell desktop with Windows XP. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Iggie

Wondering if you might have mistakenly deleted a sound driver

You might visit the Dell site looking for updated drivers for your particular model. If there are updated drivers for the sound installing them may well cure your problem.

And even worse if it is not a fan it could be the hard drive starting to fail, some will get weird noises prior to failing. IF that happens your info will be stuck on a dead drive. Any time a pc starts making unusual noise it is time to take a trip to the pc doctor LOL

(Does XP start to fail after so many years? It didn't recognize my printer a week ago so I had to do a reinstall on the printer. Now I have no sound. Thanks again.) I'm great at tearing my computer up but not so hot at fixing it. If you think your hard drive or mother board is acting up, Take some CD's and make backups of your Documents and pictures. I bought Acronis True Image 10.0 (They now have 11) to make a complete backup of my hard drive and I used it to clone a second hard drive as a spare. I removed the clone and put it away. I will give you more places to check on your sound problem that I have stored. First right click your speaker Icon and open Volume control and make sure your sound is not muted. Located on your lower right. If you don't have a speaker Icon go to the Control Panel and check your sound Windows XP See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under Windows Audio. Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped Left click Windows Audio and click restart. - Or Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start Start - Run - Type - dxdiag - OK Wait for it to load. Here you can test Sound Tab - Music Tab - and at the end click More Help Tab to trouble shoot sound

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.

just thinking the simplest stuff first you did not perhaps accidentally unplug the speaker cord from the back of the pc when plugging in your printer? I know mine has a short cord and moving the tower has pulled the plug out a few times.

Have you tried right clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom systray opening and adjusting volume there?
You say you can not hilight it have you tried putting the cursor on it and hitting enter to select it?

and it could be your sound card having problems

Dell computer usually put the sound driver on a Resource CD
that comes with your computer. The 2 Dell that I've worked
on had this.

See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under
Windows Audio.
Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped
Left click Windows Audio and click restart. -
Or
Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start
If the above doesn't work, go to control panel and open System Icon -
Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... -
Right click Realtek AC 97 (Or whatever Sound you have) - Left click - Update Driver.
To update you will need the CD that came with your computer
Or go on the Internet to download the drivers for your sound.
Find what sound your using. All Programs - Accessories -
System Tools - System Information.

If you go to www.support.dell.com and put in your service tag it will pull up the driversÂ specific for your system. Once you've found the audio driver just download it and select the "Run" option. This will launch the wizard that will help you install it.

When re-installing the printer, make sure you do it step by step using the big sheet that came with the printer. You know the one with all the pictures and where you start out with everything turned off. It then tells you when to turn on the printer, install the printer cord, plug into computer etc.
I have found over the years that if you dont follow the steps verbatim, something screws up or the printer doesnt install right
