Entertainment folder is empty

I have not been able to hear any sounds from my computer for a few days so I checked the cord and it's plugged into the right connection. I went to Start-All Programs-Accessories-Entertainment to see if mute was checked in volume control and Entertainment is empty. In Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices, it says there are no audio devices. How do I correct that? I was able to adjust the volume about four days ago and I haven't had any virus attacks. Help!

You can do a System Restore to the day before your sound disappeared.
Start - all programs - accessories - system tools -
system restore.

You can go to control panel - Open system icon - Hardware Tab - Device manager - Right click your sound - properties -
click update - you will need the CD that came with your computer.
The sound drivers are probably listed on your CD, they are on
mine.
On some of the newer computers like my emachine.
Start - all programs - system recovery - 3 listings and one of
the listings has the Drivers on it.

2 Tools to use.
1. Start - my computer - Right click Local Disks C - Properties - Tools Tab - Error Checking Section -
Check Now - Check mark both boxes - Click Start.
This will start when you Restart your computer. It take about 35 minute on mine. 5 parts and the last 2 takes
the longest.

2.The second thing to try is -
Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
You need the Recovery CD that came with your Computer if it finds anything wrong.
Don't insert unless asked for.
Takes about 35 minutes.

Thanks. I tried all those things and they didn't work. Does XP start to fail after so many years? It didn't recognize my printer a week ago so I had to do a reinstall on the printer. Now I have no sound. Thanks again.

Somehow or other this folder just disappeared into thin air. My email does not automatically delete when I close it. I checked the recycle bin. I did a system restore. I can't find it. I'll just have to hope that the few items I ordered show up before the bill since I can't track anything without the receipts.

Windows Vista Recovery is a fake computer analysis and optimization program that displays fake information in order to scare you into believing that there is an issue with your computer. Windows Vista Recovery is installed via Trojans that display false error messages and security warnings on the infected computer. These messages will state that there is something wrong with your computer's hard drive and then suggests that you download and install a program that can fix the problem. When you click on of these alerts, Windows Vista Recovery will automatically be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Once installed, Windows Vista Recovery will be configured to start automatically when you login to Windows. Once started, it will display numerous error messages when you attempt to launch programs or delete files. Windows Vista Recovery will then prompt you to scan your computer, which will then find a variety of errors that it states it cannot fix until you purchase the program. When you use the so-called defragment tool it will state that it needs to run in Safe Mode and then show a fake Safe Mode background that pretends to defrag your computer. As this program is a scam do not be scared into purchasing the program when you see its alerts. To further make it seem like your computer is not operating correctly, Windows Vista Recovery will also make it so that certain folders on your computer display no contents. When opening these folders, such as C:\Windows\System32\ or various drive letters, instead of seeing the normal list of files it will instead display a different folder's contents or make it appear as if the folder is empty. This is done to make it seem like there is corruption on your hard drive that is causing your files to not be displayed. You should follow the instructions in the link provided.. Almost as easy. Highlight the desired folder, click on first entry on right side, hold down the 'Shift' button and tap the 'End' button and everything is highlighted, release the Shift button then tap 'Delete'

Not until recently. You always think it will be your kids who move back in, but in our case it was first a son's ex-girlfriend who needed emergency housing, which turned into a 9 month stay (she's darling and a good friend), and later a nephew just out of the army finding his way in the civilian world. That lasted for just 2 or 3 months, but he always came back for advice about how things were going in his life. (Things went well. First he finished his HS education and then college. He now has a very lucrative job and a darling family of his own.) Our youngest moved back in for a while because he was making poverty wages at Barnes and Noble and couldn't afford anything else until he got a "real" job and moved north. In the end, the oldest and youngest both moved to the northern end of the state, which is just too far for an easy drive - 9 hours - which made holidays tough. The middle child moved to the other side of the country early on. We recently made the decision to move north to be closer the two up here and the two darling grandchildren, leaving behind the house we bought 41 years ago before #1 was even born. If we ever manage to get this house functioning, I expect the kids/grandkids to be here often. The other coaster may actually make it out this way. Meanwhile, I'm still doing laundry at my daughter's house across town. She figures that's a good exchange for babysitting. I figure that I really like my new backyard:

I'm great at tearing my computer up but not so hot at
fixing it.
If you think your hard drive or mother board is acting up,
Take some CD's and make backups of your Documents and pictures.
I bought Acronis True Image 10.0 (They now have 11)
to make a complete backup of my hard drive and I used it
to clone a second hard drive as a spare.
I removed the clone and put it away.

I will give you more places to check on your sound problem
that I have stored.
First right click your speaker Icon and open Volume control
and make sure your sound is not muted. Located on your lower right.
If you don't have a speaker Icon go to the Control Panel and check your sound
Windows XP
See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under
Windows Audio.
Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped
Left click Windows Audio and click restart. -
Or
Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start

Start - Run - Type - dxdiag - OK
Wait for it to load. Here you can test Sound Tab - Music Tab - and at the end click More Help Tab

Do you hear the beep during the POST at startup?
Have you installed or removed anything that might have caused this?
Have you tried a music CD in the computer?
You say you do not have a virus, how about malware?
What safety programs do you run besides your anti virus program?

You could go to the computer manufacturers site looking for updated drivers.

I would approach it a different way.
My direction would be to go to Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs--->Add/Remove Windows Components. Find Media Player, uncheck and click Next and finally Finish. Then repeat and add the check next to Media Player. Just my 2 cents.

I can play a music CD. I have a firewall. I have checked for spyware and have found nothing.
When this happened, nothing had been installed or uninstalled.
In the DirectX Diagnostic, in the Sound 1 tab, it says the device is "Modem #0 Line Playback (emulated). There is no Device ID , it says it is the default device.
In the Sound 2 tab, it has the soundcard info and says "no" for default device. When I test it , I can hear it.
Should the soundcard be the default device?
When I go to Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices in the Volume tab it says "No Audio Device". In the Sounds tab, when I click to listen to a sound it says
"Windows cannot play the sound. Your sound card may be in use."
