I think it would probably be odd in a very good way. Individuality adds character, and when it arises from functionality--fantastic.

If you have uppers over the area, then a drawer might not work--getting stuff in & out of the drawer might be a little awkward (if I'm understanding you correctly)? But a door ought to work (hinged either on the side or from the top) and it would be a great place to stash a dish drainer. (Be sure to leave enough room for undercab lighting.)

I found some bonus space behind my shower wall when I redid a bathroom--had just enough room to squeeze in a 24'' base cab so all of the cab is recessed into the wall with only the face frame showing. It's great added storage space! When I installed it, I used screws inside of the cabinet to attach it to the studs so, if we ever need to replace the shower faucets, we can easily remove it to gain access to that area behind the shower.

I'm confused. Is it above and behind a counter top? Or.. it's on an unused wall then I suppose it's like a short deep ironing board closet- exactly like you said. That might be cool. I wouldn't want it above a counter...

It (or they) would be approximately here, though probably lower.

I have 48" wide overhead with a 36" sink base so I donÂt think it will interfere with the sink. The toaster oven will be under the MW and the stud is exactly at the end of the MW cabinet.

A door could work too but depending on how deep we go with the base cabinets, it might be hard to reach the back of the cabinet. I thought a drawer might make things more accessible and I could leave it open for air drying dishes if I go that route. With 2 shallow ones, I'd probably use them for my stockpile of new scrubbing brushes & sponges and clean dish towels instead of the drawer to the right of the sink.

I don't know if you like things out in the open, but couldn't you just create a wall niche? Kinda like in a shower. I have extra sponges in a pretty ceramic canister which would fit on a shelf/niche like that. You could tile it like your backsplash if your doing one. I know you said 15" W and 22"D but did you say how high? That might impact this idea.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I love your idea! I would absolutely jump all over the opportunity to put a couple of drawers in there for dishcloths, sponges, scrubbies, etc.

What a wonderful idea! Is it possible to have one on the other side of the sink as well (probably not as you said you didn't have room the entire length)?

You might think about what you could do to balance it on the other side....if that's important to you. Maybe decorative tile or artwork or something else...just something to think about. I would definitely go with your idea...it sounds like a great use of "unused" space!

I wouldn't think you'd want anything damp in there, but it would be an awesome place to store clean dish towels and cloths! Or new, unused sponges, dishwasher tablets, the stopper for your sink, or even hand lotion! Found spaces, that's what I DREAM of! LUCKY!;o)

ARe you thinking of having the bottom of the drawers made of something waterproof and perforated? Then drawers could be left open to dry?

You must be tall, because most shorter people (like me) would not be able to see or reach into drawers at that height or location. I don't know if your in your home for the long haul or ever plan on selling, but utilitize that little space in a way that will appeal to the masses. Majority of buyers don't think outside of the box and will probably not appreciate the unique aspect of drawers in a wall. Go with the niche', makes more sense. (sorry, that's the realtor in me talking) :c)

The cross bar (blocking???) is at 50" so that would be the max height of the top drawer. Two of my IKEA drawers add up to around 13" so I think I could just squeeze them in with an inch or two above the counter for clearance.

I have sort of changed my mind about the dish drawer because of dampness and because IÂd probably leave it open all the time but the sink stopper and hand lotion sound promising.

I think IÂd get much more use out of the drawers than a niche IÂll have to keep organized but I could put a small one above the drawers. We plan to stay here until this kitchen falls apart so resale isnÂt a factor. The wall was intended to have rails and racks for utensils and the only difference is theyÂll have to be off to the right now instead of centered but I donÂt think it will look too bad with them on 2/3 of the wall.

Unfortunately, I canÂt balance it out with more drawers on the other side without making my husband tear down the cabinets and drywall he just installed to relocate the ductwork I told him not to mess with a month ago. IÂd have to finish the kitchen myself at that point. LOL
