Grohe Isn't Kidding - Valve depth

I've been looking at this Grohe Grohtherm 34 331 rough-in shower valve and trim kit, (Atrio 191 70), and it's looking like I've got to get that valve mounted just right so the front plate is flush with the tile surface.

Am I interpreting this wrong - I thought most valves allowed some wiggle room when it comes to valve depth.

You can't know in advance exactly how thick the wall will be - I must be reading this wrong.

Bill, I took a very quick look and I saw 13/16ths inch of wiggle room allowed. The back face of the valve can be between 2-15/16ths and 3-3/4 inches from the face of the finish tile.

Does your schematic look the same or different? The one I linked to was a quick and dirty google hit.

Yes, that's exactly the schematic I have. I was playing with the trim kit and couldn't figure out how it worked to take up any extra wiggle. I'll go back to it and play some more - must have been doing something wrong.

I'm very sorry I did not answer the questions from the last few years... I've been out of reno mode for a while :) It's probably too late, but here are the replies: @walkin_yesindeed - the vanity finish has held up just fine. However, it's not the original paint. We sanded and re-painted with new Ben Moore bathroom paint. No issues with dampness (we do run the fan for every shower, though.) @kirkhall - I have NOT been happy with the touted un-stainable-ness of the epoxy grout on the floor. I mean, it's better than regular grout, but it didn't stay white no matter how much I cleaned it. It looks fine, since the tile is multi-toned, but it's definitely not still white. The shower grout, however, has held up extremely well. @SparklingWater - I don't recall the demo being terribly difficult, but that may be because I knew what to expect from other parts of the house. It was tile over a dense cement. @MrsD - I think the grout color is standard white. @MayaEoff - Our tub is the standard 30" size.

I have a Jenn-Air french door, counter depth. It's about 4-5 years old. I can't remember the height (68 or so inches I'm guessing) but it's almost the largest they made at the time other than the sub-zero size. I wish I had held out for another brand, but I wanted the model with the ice and filtered water dispenser in the door as I am a total water drinker, as in all.the.time, so it's an important feature for me. At the time, KA and JA were about the only brands with this feature. Now there are several. My old refrig died and this one was in stock; I would have had to wait almost 2 weeks for the KA. I should have stuck it out. This thing has cold spots leading to ice chunks in the milk. Several times a year I have soggy, frozen lettuce in the crisper. Those may have been due to an inadvertent movement of the crisper setting but I don't think so. I think the dang refrigerator just ices up and thaws at random. Sometimes we have to take the ice maker out and shake it to get the ice to dispense. It's a wimpy size ice maker too, so I'm glad I don't rely on it for large amounts of ice.

What type of diving board and stand are you putting in. The classification will dictate the dive profile. The diving board is a 6' "Edge" diving system by Inter-fab (inter-fab.com). We did check with our insurance and HOA first. Here's another "top down" artist rendering: And a few site photos: We're still in the bidding process, but this is basically the exact drawing that I supplied. We're looking at Riverbend, Claffy and ClearTech right now. We'll probably consider a couple more before a final decision is made. Riverbend won't supply a full list of specific equipment (even though we've asked so we can compare apples to apples)... I've very hesitant about spending $85K without specifics! Too many corners can be cut if you don't have it in writing. I had an interesting talk with the bank about financing Friday. They (Frost Bank) said that they are one of the only banks still doing loans for pools. The problem that we're running into is because of the fire and rebuild. Since a pool / home improvement loan is tied to the appraisal value of the house, we can't get a loan until the house is finished and get a full appraisal. This puts us in a bind because the clearance from our property to next door is now 12', but will decrease to 8' when the air conditioners are installed (the golf course will not allow access from behind the property). Unless I can figure something out, we'll have to pay for the pool out of pocket rather than finance. We can do it, but it'll put a crimp in my cash flow and I'll have to cash in a few investments. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm thrilled that my kitchen is an inspiration to someone, and was remiss in not mentioning my two main inspiration kitchens: those of cat_mom (wouldn't have tried for a more contemporary feel had I not fallen in love with the clean lines of her kitchen) and Jodi_in_socal, the original GW trendsetter for the Fire and Ice backsplash. To make sure I was understanding this valve, I mounted it within the suggested depth range and put a piece of wood up that's the thickness of the wall, to simulate a finished wall surface.

I put the trim kit on and it all looks good but the screws that attach the inner trim piece to the valve body, (the finish trim piece snaps onto the inner piece), are too long! You can see that there are two sets of mounting holes on the valve. The ones at the tips of the butterfly wings don't work with the trim kit I have. The lower ones do work, but they're lined up with the valve body, which gets in the way of tightening the screws all the down. No problem to go out and buy a couple shorter ones but still, why would Grohe provide screws that are too long. Makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I'm guessing Grohe hasn't idiot proofed this installation.

So, I guess I'm looking for a validation of my thinking - that all's well and I just need shorter screws.

Have you met the minimum depth requirement? Do you show at least 3" from the back of the valve to the face of your mocked up piece of plywood?

They also have the other measurement you can go off of that's taken off the front of the valve, the 1-1/4" to 2-1/16th" measurement.

About the only other thing I can offer is to make sure that you have the correct trim kit for the valve you've installed. Sometime older versions are supplanted by newer, and then Tab A doesn't always fit into Slot B.

Regardless, shorter screws may indeed be the easy way out.

Thanks, Mongo. I'm definitely within the specified ranges. I'm thinking the it's just that the screws are wrong - I'll get shorter ones.

You know, I think I'm done buying this stuff online. My kitchen faucet wasn't right either.
