How To Operate An Old IPod

- or for that matter, any IPod.

I was recently given an old (30 GB) IPod, and since it represents the direction in which I want to go, it would behoove me to learn how to use it.

I did go to the Apple website and looked at the manuals available but found nothing that had my model - I likely overlooked it but still, I know nothing about this but would like to learn.

If anyone can direct me to a site that gives me some IPod edumacation, I'd be very grateful.

I just bought a USB connector for it and it's apparently charging (it was dormant for at least a year) - the screen on it now says 'Do not disconnect', along with displaying the red 'Do not' symbol, so I won't.

Its dimensions are roughly 5.5" by 2.9" and its upper half is a display screen, while its lower half is a circular control system that's marked (from the 12 o'clock position) 'Menu', 'Fast forward', 'Play/Pause' and 'Reverse'.

I see no other model # on it aside from '30GB' on the back of the unit. It's also encased in a stylish leather (black) ensemble - wait, it was wearing that but I stripped it in an effort to find out the model #.

Anyway, if you could tell me where to find an instruction manual, I'd be much obliged. I look forward to going CD-less and I understand this is how to do it.

One more thing - at 30GB, how many songs (nothing else) will it hold, approximately?

A 30G iPod will hold something like 8,000 songs. As for the manual, follow the link before and pick the one that matches you model. You may need to click on the picture of an iPod in the upper left corner of the page to display all models. Quite frankly, they're all pretty easy to operate and there aren't that many differences in basic operations between the different models.

It may take several hours to fully charge. It may make sense to do a full restore and check for software updates before importing any of your songs.

Can't help with the problem but I do have ie7 and I do download from Itunes once in awhile and I have never had any issues. CW suggests that it might be an issue with Mc Affee... seems that I was always having issues with that software so I deleted it from my system. __john

Kudzu9, I think I will have my answer tomorrow morning when I check my ISP useage log but I am now fairly confident my issue is inhouse. Snidely, yes this kid needs the bar raised, and perhaps my daughter too. We are not often fortunate enough to enjoy fireside chats only carefully chosen words. Ravencajun, wow you got me all excited there for a minute or three ha ha. Never knew about router logs till now and a Worldstart tutorial lead me along. That was when I realised I had disassociated the WiFi early today, saved and by doing so wiped the old logs. Only today's activity is visible. But I will keep that neat tid bit for future reference for sure. Thank you. The Dlink router does not seem to offer the amount of information suggested by the Worldstart tutorial though. Cheaper router, less bells and whistles I suppose.

Have you purchased songs and/or video that are protected? If so, you'll also want to make sure you decommission the old PC AFTER transferring the songs and videos. With protected content, there's a limit to how many devices it can be copied to. I don't think decommission is the right word, but it's something like that. It frees that license so you can transfer to another computer. One way I've done it is to just copy the itunes folder in My Music to an external drive, then copy that to the new computer.

dreamn...I think the thing is that the songs are on her iPod, but NOT on the computer. Everybody told me (years ago) that you coluldn't do it from the iPod to the computer...only the reverse, BUT THAT IS INCORRECT. I have two homes and a couple of computers at each and I have successfully done it with the program I mentioned. Much, much easier than burning a CD from one itunes library and taking it to another. I have a folder in my Yahoo email account with all the registration info that I need in case I'm asked to insert my registation data for an update or something. I LOVE the new iCloud features, but not all my songs are bought from iTunes. Any individual songs I've taken from a hard copy CD I own does not transfer except with the Cucusoft program. Try the free version to see now it works.but remember all the songs on the iPod will not transfer with the free version..just a sampling.
