How to transfer ipod song onto a new computer

I have read a few stories that when they plug their iPods into a new computer that and press "Synch" all the music goes away from their ipod.

I want to figure this out without wiping out my Ipod.

Apple doesn't make it easy to move songs from an iPod to another computer. I would strongly suggest backing up the contents of your iPod before proceeding.

Have you purchased songs and/or video that are protected? If so, you'll also want to make sure you decommission the old PC AFTER transferring the songs and videos. With protected content, there's a limit to how many devices it can be copied to. I don't think decommission is the right word, but it's something like that. It frees that license so you can transfer to another computer.

One way I've done it is to just copy the itunes folder in My Music to an external drive, then copy that to the new computer.

O.K. Confession time for me. Keep in mind I only own three pairs of shoes and one purse....I own over 2,000 CDs. Last year for Christmas I bought my sister an Ipod Classic 160 GB and planned to put my entire CD collection on it. But on I-tunes, I only had enough room to put 1,200 CDs. So now I have to get either a larger hard drive, or an external hard drive. I'm a moron when it comes to computers, so have to depend on the Best Buy computer geeks, who seem to have little patience with someone like me. Any suggestions? If I put all the music on the external drive, would it be protected if something should happen to the computer? If I had enough room, my sister could also add her CD collection to my computer and then I can re-load her Ipod. Win/win for both of us. Eventually, I'd like an Ipod for myself, but what kind? Is the Touch a better product than the Classic?

A couple of last minute questions before new computers arrive

I'm only going to respond to your non-router questions as I think you should have enough info in those other posts to make a choice. First, when your new computer is set up, plug in the new external drive to make sure it's recognized as part of that new system. It may have backup software already on it, so you could make a backup copy of your new system onto the external drive as your first step. Then, before you transfer any of the photo files, etc., to your new system, you could download and run Malwarebytes on the old computer as a precaution. Once you are sure your old system is clean, you can do your file transfer. Since you can't get your external hard drive recognized with your old computer, you'll have to do something else. If it were me, I'd get a flash drive of 4GB or larger (you can get an 8 GB drive on Amazon for less than $20). Then COPY as big a chunk as possible of those files onto the flash drive (DON'T cut and paste, as you want to leave a backup on your old computer at least until the whole transfer process is done correctly); then plug the flash drive into the new computer and copy the first batch of files to your new computer's hard drive. Then plug the flash drive back in to the old computer, delete all the files on the flash drive only, and reload it with a new chunk of files. Then load these on the new computer. Repeat until they are all loaded on to the new computer. Then, when you've transferred everything, you can copy all of them from the hard drive of the new computer to the external hard drive, which will then be your insurance policy. Second, if you have a 15 month subscription to McAfee, why complicate things? Keep it and run it. You can worry about replacing it with something else like Avast in 15 months. Just supplement it with Malwarebytes, but don't try to run another antivirus program like Avast at the same time. Also, having a router is a different issue from what ZoneAlarm software does for you. If you are running McAfee with its firewall, and occasionally running Malwarebytes, you should be fine. Also, because your knowledge of computers appears somewhat basic, ZoneAlarm may be a little sophisticated for you to make sure you are running it correctly. (I'm not trying to insult you, just trying to keep you adequately protected without making it unnecessarily complicated for you.

USE XMARKS!! it is the best way to do it, just set up an xmarks account which is free, add xmarks to your browsers there is a version for all browser types and it will save all your bookmarks and faves for you to a webpage you can log into at any time from any pc but it also automatically syncs all your pcs so that every one has the same updated bookmarks. When you do the new pc simply add the xmarks to your browser on that pc and tell it to sync and voila everything is now on the new pc. could not be easier. Import the songs into iTunes: Insert the CD, and wait for iTunes to show the songs in the CD, and then click on "Import." The songs will automatically create a Library of songs within iTunes. Once a library is created, if you now connect the iPod to your computer, iTunes will automatically transfer the songs to the iPod. Of course, you can also download music from the Internet with iTunes. There is a PC as well as a Mac version of iTunes. The CD that comes with the iPod has both versions, but it's a good idea to update the application every now and then. For iTunes to do all that, you must set its "Preferences." There is something else about the iPod, and soon other products: Some car stereos (look at the Crutchfield catalog) are iPod ready, while others require an optional electronic box. If you use one of these radios and have an iPod, you no longer need a CD changer. All you have to do is to connect the iPod to the radio, or to the control box, and the radio's display show the songs being played. You can scroll to whatever song you have in the iPod from the radio display. If you have 10,000 songs in your iPod, you can drive across the US listening to your music. The control box, keeps the iPod's battery fully charged. Other companies should jump on this technology any time now.

Yeah, didn't work. Erased everything. Good thing is is that I have all the songs saved on another HD and can pull them from there.

Next question is that my 4GB iPod doesn't hold hardly any of the library I have collected, I need a newer, larger holding iPod. The price is an issue, anyone know where I can get a good used one for cheaps?

this is why I do not use ipod or itunes or any of their oh so proprietary stuff, plus they kill you with price, so many great other brands out there that do the same thing and more and don't provide the grief of having that name attached.
Have you considered looking at some of those other brands?
Like zune, sandisk, sony, Creative makes some awesome products, try doing some searches for some of the top mp3 players. Also you can now get the ones with hard drives in them as well as the flash drive ones.

I forgot my ipod on a plane and bought a used one on ebay, but it wouldn't hold a charge so I gave up and returned it.

My new ipod is a Pandigital Novel.

Well, lucky me! I don't know what happened, but I left the iPod plugged into the computer last night when I was done with it and today all the songs are back! The iPod still was in the middle of doing something, it warned me not to unplug it still, but I did and all the songs are back.

Thanks for the info and advice, I would be happy to go with a different MP3 player, iPod is all I have ever known so I just didn't consider another brand.

bpgreen me too!! and with the ability to use a 32 gig SD card in it you can put a lot on it! Plus you can surf, email, view pics and play games. I love mine. However the size difference would be a problem for some.

Glad you got your ipod back the way you wanted it, yea never a good idea to unplug when it says not to can cause some major corruptions.
