How to transfer ipod song onto a new computer

I have read a few stories that when they plug their iPods into a new computer that and press "Synch" all the music goes away from their ipod.

I want to figure this out without wiping out my Ipod.

Apple doesn't make it easy to move songs from an iPod to another computer. I would strongly suggest backing up the contents of your iPod before proceeding.

Have you purchased songs and/or video that are protected? If so, you'll also want to make sure you decommission the old PC AFTER transferring the songs and videos. With protected content, there's a limit to how many devices it can be copied to. I don't think decommission is the right word, but it's something like that. It frees that license so you can transfer to another computer.

One way I've done it is to just copy the itunes folder in My Music to an external drive, then copy that to the new computer.

O.K. Confession time for me. Keep in mind I only own three pairs of shoes and one purse....I own over 2,000 CDs. Last year for Christmas I bought my sister an Ipod Classic 160 GB and planned to put my entire CD collection on it. But on I-tunes, I only had enough room to put 1,200 CDs. So now I have to get either a larger hard drive, or an external hard drive. I'm a moron when it comes to computers, so have to depend on the Best Buy computer geeks, who seem to have little patience with someone like me. Any suggestions? If I put all the music on the external drive, would it be protected if something should happen to the computer? If I had enough room, my sister could also add her CD collection to my computer and then I can re-load her Ipod. Win/win for both of us. Eventually, I'd like an Ipod for myself, but what kind? Is the Touch a better product than the Classic?

USE XMARKS!! it is the best way to do it, just set up an xmarks account which is free, add xmarks to your browsers there is a version for all browser types and it will save all your bookmarks and faves for you to a webpage you can log into at any time from any pc but it also automatically syncs all your pcs so that every one has the same updated bookmarks. When you do the new pc simply add the xmarks to your browser on that pc and tell it to sync and voila everything is now on the new pc. could not be easier. Do you have any DRM protected content that you purchased from itunes? That may make a difference in how you do this. You can copy protected content to more than one PC, but there is a limit (I forget what the limit is). You can simply copy the contents of "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" from your current PC to the new one to start. Since you can have the content on 2 PCs, this works for the protected content, also. If you're using itunes, you can use the ipod with both PCs, but I don't think you can use the ipod to transfer between the two PCs (at least not readily). You can use it with both PCs. To do so, when you connect it, on the ipod summary page, check the Manually manage music and videos button. Then, when you want to copy to the ipod, you drag from the left bar to the ipod. If you click help and search for manually manage, you'll find detailed instructions. You can also check the box to enable disk use, but itunes doesn't copy files to the ipod with the same names as it uses in Windows, so that won't be much help, I don't think.

Import the songs into iTunes: Insert the CD, and wait for iTunes to show the songs in the CD, and then click on "Import." The songs will automatically create a Library of songs within iTunes. Once a library is created, if you now connect the iPod to your computer, iTunes will automatically transfer the songs to the iPod. Of course, you can also download music from the Internet with iTunes. There is a PC as well as a Mac version of iTunes. The CD that comes with the iPod has both versions, but it's a good idea to update the application every now and then. For iTunes to do all that, you must set its "Preferences." There is something else about the iPod, and soon other products: Some car stereos (look at the Crutchfield catalog) are iPod ready, while others require an optional electronic box. If you use one of these radios and have an iPod, you no longer need a CD changer. All you have to do is to connect the iPod to the radio, or to the control box, and the radio's display show the songs being played. You can scroll to whatever song you have in the iPod from the radio display. If you have 10,000 songs in your iPod, you can drive across the US listening to your music. The control box, keeps the iPod's battery fully charged. Other companies should jump on this technology any time now.

Yeah, didn't work. Erased everything. Good thing is is that I have all the songs saved on another HD and can pull them from there.

Next question is that my 4GB iPod doesn't hold hardly any of the library I have collected, I need a newer, larger holding iPod. The price is an issue, anyone know where I can get a good used one for cheaps?

this is why I do not use ipod or itunes or any of their oh so proprietary stuff, plus they kill you with price, so many great other brands out there that do the same thing and more and don't provide the grief of having that name attached.
Have you considered looking at some of those other brands?
Like zune, sandisk, sony, Creative makes some awesome products, try doing some searches for some of the top mp3 players. Also you can now get the ones with hard drives in them as well as the flash drive ones.

I forgot my ipod on a plane and bought a used one on ebay, but it wouldn't hold a charge so I gave up and returned it.

My new ipod is a Pandigital Novel.

Well, lucky me! I don't know what happened, but I left the iPod plugged into the computer last night when I was done with it and today all the songs are back! The iPod still was in the middle of doing something, it warned me not to unplug it still, but I did and all the songs are back.

Thanks for the info and advice, I would be happy to go with a different MP3 player, iPod is all I have ever known so I just didn't consider another brand.

bpgreen me too!! and with the ability to use a 32 gig SD card in it you can put a lot on it! Plus you can surf, email, view pics and play games. I love mine. However the size difference would be a problem for some.

Glad you got your ipod back the way you wanted it, yea never a good idea to unplug when it says not to can cause some major corruptions.
