802.11g (WiFi) Router works sometimes

I have two notebooks, one a Gateway with a built-in 802.11g, and one an older HP with a PCMCIA 802.11g adapter. When I installed my DSL Router with 4 Ethernet ports and one 802.11g WiFi port/antenna, I used the Gateway using an Ethernet port. After installation I noticed the Gateway also "saw" the WiFi and connected, sort of, the signal is there, but it can not communicate with the router.

I left the gateway on the Ethernet, leaving the WiFi no-op for another time, next I powered up the HP laptop with the adapter, used the provided CD to install the adapter, guess, don't remember, I gave the name of the router and the WiFi worked perfectly, giving the HP access to DSL and to the Ethernet connected network elements.

I welcome any pointers to how to best trouble shoot the Gateway WiFi.

You probably don't want to be connected with both a wired eithernet connection & the wifi adapter connection at the same time on the same laptop. \ The wired nic connection has a higher priority level.

You have a ethernet only Router? And a seperate wifi access point plugged into on if the routers lan ports?

No, I have a Netgear Router with 4 Ethernet Ports, a Modem port and an antenna. I have problems getting the WiFI on the Gateway to connect even if the Ethernet connection is pulled. Not sure I tried rebooting after pulling the Ethernet plug. Can try that too, but haven't yet, deciding to answer your (mmikie) question first.

I don't know if McDonalds is an open network or not, but if it is you should be able to connect automatically. If you don't get a connections, again if open, McD may have some log-on requirement, most do, something to say you agree to be on an open, no security, network Seems I sometimes have to click: Start -> connect to -> Show all connections -> Click on the "Wireless" Icon and ask to "see all networks". This may be enough to get you connected, if necessary at all.

Thanks mike. I guess I should have said 'reboot' in my initial post rather than restart. Yes, I rebooted several times to get the opportunity to enter the security password. This pad does not have cellular capability so when wi fi is gone, it is disconnected. It certainly used to connect to other networks, but I haven't checked lately. I was beginning to think that the pad was retaining wifi connection, but today it is again back to disconnected, still with the blue check indicating that it is connected. The only difference from several days ago, is that the password on 'client ID' is still showing. I had assumed that the showing password was somehow involved in the wifi retention. I have considered 'forget your WiFi', but I don't know where to get the ssid. I suppose it is built in but I don't understand this stuff that well. Edit for addition: OK, I got brave (or could have been stupid) and 'forgot the network' and at least for the time being, the pad is reconnected. It was easy to reconnect because my regular network was still waiting for me to re choose it and it immediately asked for the password and I was properly connected. The password isn't showing in 'client ID'. Perhaps it was never the appropriate place to add it anyway!? I do see a couple of possible differences in the settings that I wrote down if things didn't work. There may have been a difference in the DNS setting (whatever that is) (or it might have been a hand written typo on my part) but the new setting's last 7 chars are now 171.2.226 and I scribed 172.2.226. And under the area of HTTP Proxy (whatever that is), OFF is highlighted, and before there was a space below where it said URL. Was it waiting for some website? So, for the time being, things are in order. It took 2.5 days to lose the network the last time, so we'll see.?!

Are there any Cleaning Features you can use. Sometimes this will help when a printer has sat for a while. On my Brother Inkjet (MFC-845cw) I have to clean it numerous times to get it to print correctly. It doesn't get used much (only for Photos on Photo Paper). We have Two Brother Color Laser AIO Printers (MFC-9440cn and DCp9040cn) that are the really workhorses in our printing. Your Printer has a LED Readout and in the Menu you might find the Cleaning Feature. Scroll thru and see if you can find it. Once you find this feature run it several times to see if it helps. I would run it 10-15 times to be sure it's printing correctly!

I have LG front loads which I love - bought them for the features but not the wifi connectivity, though it offers that. Not long ago I installed the app just to see what it might do (planned to uninstall because of security issues). The app was useless, no real features that I'd ever find remotely useful... and when I walked 2 ft away it dropped out. I did (for fun) attempt to access the app while standing in front of them, and it was too buggy to work. Personally, I'd buy for other features and read reviews, never wifi connectivity. I uninstalled the app as I'd planned. Karen, consider what you might use it for... if you're not home, would you be comfortable adding to the drying time - or concerned about overheating your clothes or dryer? Why start a washer if you aren't home - no one is there to load it and mine is very quiet. Do you just want to know when the cycle finishes? I thought that might be handy but honestly, mine makes a tune when done, and I hear it anywhere pretty much unless I'm working in the yard - and I don't carry my phone there. If I'm not at home, I can't pull the clothes out anyway and put them in the dryer. My dryer also makes a tune, but sometimes I need to remove and untangle clothes. Some offer diagnostics if experiencing an issue, but these same diagnostics are on my front panels. I don't wish to start or stop drying or washing via wifi, so basically, I don't see a good use for such a thing, even without the possible security issues.

Might need to reboot the router.
If it works just sometimes, the fact that it does work makes me think you might have a poor/weak signal because of distance, walls, or some other interference.

Might have a neighbor on same channel and that signal might be enough to mess up just the one computer.

Sorry about my "imprecise language: works sometimes" I was referring to works on HP doesn't work on Gateway. Both have been tested within 10 feet of the Router.

XP should pop a window at windows start up asking which connection to connect to, then once you select your ssid, it should then ask you to type in the security key.
\ Mostly when I see people fixing their wifi connection it is they screwed up on the security key with a typo and I swear,,, my computer purposely makes type.O's all on its own when typing those keys so I try to copy/paste them in.

Right, while you were helping (I'm not fully comfortable yet) I tried with a boot with the Ethernet disconnected. The notebook came up with the wireless detected and a strong signal seen, but would not work and when looking at the "view all wireless networks" a note advised: Windows can not configure this wireless connection....something about if some other program in control, or look at article 871122 in MS Know ledge base. Before doing that I went back to the Broadband Wireless Utility, this comes active on boot and is the software associated with the built-in wireless adapter in the notebook, it appears. So, this must the reason MS couldn't configure. Looking at the various dialog boxes associated with the Broadcom I re-entered the Network Key. I figured I knew it, and noted the number of "*" in the boxes were one character short of the key I remember. So I re-entered the key, and the WiFi started working, I'm using it right now. Thus, I've removed while typing my discomfort noted at the start of this post, it is the Broadcom software that is in control and I made an error when I first tired to activate, wrong key just as you, mikie, suggest. Thanks.
