this means I need a 'g' router?

The specs on the Toshiba pc say: Wireless LAN

Wirelessly connects to a Wi-Fi signal or hotspot (Router) using an 802.11b/g card.

That means buying a 'n' router for mt home gets me nothing right? The Linksys WRT54GT seams a proven model...should I get this one?

Most routers are backwards compatible, which means that, if you buy an advanced router that supports the N standard, it's not a problem. It will handle the other standards prior to that one. For example, I just bought an "N+" Belkin router and the specs for it say: "Supports IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n." And in fact, I have an older laptop that has a 5 year old card in it that works fine with this new standard. If you buy the latest model, with a faster standard, then it will not become obsolete as soon, and it will work better and faster with new equipment you may add in the future.

yea but by the time I get the 'new' equipment my fast 'n' router will be outdated!

Not all roses are as fast growing, durable nor vital own root as budded. Some bands are going to explode as soon as they get their "feet" out of those tight bands. Many others simply won't. Some climates permit planting directly from the band into the ground. Many others, don't. If you're intending to put the rose in a particularly difficult spot, such as against a hot wall, or in a bed fronted, surrounded or backed by hot hard scape, the rose will be MUCH more successful if it has some plant mass and momentum under it than a small, immature stick with shallow roots might. Of course, conditions vary greatly from one climate and garden to the next, but there have been many complaints over the past two-plus decades bands have been available about how easily they are lost because they are so small, soft and immature. If you are able to grow your bands in those small pots successfully, great! Don't 'fix it' as it ain't broke. But, MANY of us are sure to lose them due to aridity, heat, wind, sun intensity, etc. Planting them into larger containers, permitting them to mature, develop root and plant mass before setting them free in the soil is the surest method of guarantying success. Even if my climate permitted planting bands directly in the garden, the blamed rabbits and squirrels would make sure they didn't survive. Kim

yes if the pc is that old that it does not have an ethernet connection I would bet the USB is the old 1.0 which would mean slow, I would definitely instead pick up a card to put in the pc.

fwiw WPA is the security most would use. One passphrase of 20 charatures is recommended by most to make it virtually unhackable. That security is to keep others out of your router or off your internet connection. Many people screw up writing down passphrases on paper and/or retyping it in. Can't connect complaints usually blaming it on other things are frequently solved by whoops, my passphrase was entered wrong. Copy & Paste passphase is virtually foolproof. But requires a bit of though. Dont push the OK button until you've pasted it onto notepad or something. WEP is ok, but there are programs Johnny Jr next door might use to gain access in a few minutes. One of those four WEP keys is designated the primary key with a bullet or check box... that checked key you would copy/paste into your computer for the passphrase or key. You're not going to be automatically given a key in your home. Maybe at work when login & security is handled off a server. When you do credit cards and other secrets online usually its on a secure web page and those web pages are encryped so mr bad guy & neighbor are not able to see anything except googlygoop.

I personally chose the G rather than the N because so many of the reviews on the N routers were horrible the reviews on the one I got were very good and the thing was a breeze to set up, the cd that came with it took care of everything. The one thing I did have to do that it did not say was to once it was all installed and finished I had to unplug my modem power and the router power and do a power up with the modem first on wait for it to fully light up and be active then plug in the router let it fully light up then power up your computers. I set mine up with WPA2 security which is the highest available now. Just make darn sure which ever you get you have a notebook and pen handy to write down all your passwords and key codes so you do not lose them, I put mine on a card and tape to the bottom of my router, if someone gets as far as in my house to steal my router they can have it lol. All of my wireless set up pretty easily and I have a full loaded bars so good wireless signal.

Perhaps, but a router that supports the N standard is not that expensive...mine was $60, and it improved my data transmission quality substantially. My Skype video calls are much, much sharper, I'm getting stronger signals throughout my house for my wireless, and I've had no dropped connections so far. A newer router may just perform better for you than that Linksys model you mentioned. I used that Linksys router model myself a while back, but it's been retired to the burial ground of outmoded electronics that resides in my attic.

ok, just that other posts seam to indicate it sort of like getting an HDTV converter box from the cable company but have an old tube tv...I am trying to figure out if I get anything out of spending the extra $15 for the 'n' as opposed to the 'g' that btw has incredible reviews...

I have just the b,g router, but I have had it several years. If I were buying today, I'd get the n router, which does have a larger range of signal.

N,, better signal and security most likely.
More state of the art.

And your next wifi toy will most likely be N, even if a couple years from now.

I just bought a new wireless router and got the linksys G the reason I did was simply due to the reviews, all the reviews for the N routers I looked at were horrible and the reviews for the instructions for setup were horrible, the reviews on the other hand for the the G were very good, I knew several people using the same G model and they all had very good reports to share. I may sometime in the future want to go with an N but for now with my set up the G is perfectly fine and my signal strength is exceptional. My original thought was go with the newest but after reading so many bad reviews I decided to go with what was solid.
Which one each person chooses is up to them of course everyone has their own way of picking and choosing.
As to security WPA2 is still the top choice on the N also as it is on G no change there.
