New Computer WiFi Question

For my Christmas to me present, I have ordered a Gateway DX4860 UR32P desktop. One of the technical items listed is WiFi Data Transfer rate up to 300 mbps and WiFi description 802.11 b/g/n wifi CERTIFIED.

In the "written" description of the computer it states that "802.11 b/g/n Wireless; gives you the freedom to use your desktop in any room throughout your home without the hassle of cables and wires".

What does this mean? Is the router already built in?

I ordered online so no salesperson to ask.

Thanks in advance for any help in answering this question.

No, I believe they mean that it is ready to go once you buy and set up your wireless router

It means the computer has a wireless adapter built in. You still need a wireless router.

I also got a netbook for use when traveling, my choice was to get the ATT air card for mine that way no matter where I am I can use the air card to connect. It is secure and I am the only one using it. When at home I can either plug directly into my router with an ethernet cable or use my air card until I move to a wireless router in the future. I had my cell phones with ATT anyway so I went with them but there are other companies that have air cards such as Verizon and Sprint, I did comparisons and the ATT and Verizon seemed the best and both are about the same price, there is a cost for the card but they had a rebate that paid fully for the card, I have a monthly fee for the card just like if it was a cell phone and in fact it does assign it a cell phone number. so anywhere you would have cell phone coverage you would be able to use it. I have not been anywhere yet that I did not get a signal. For the price they want to charge you for that one week you could pay for your air card for a month.

Most people I know who have an iPad (or any other tablet) use it on WiFi. There are iPads and other tablets that can also use a cellular data connection. It's certainly a useful feature to have but it is far from essential and is probably most beneficial to those who travel frequently. Frankly, I think a 7" tablet is a little small to be used as a desktop or laptop substitute on a regular basis, especially for web browsing. I also think that the iPad Mini is a bit pricey. I'd suggest spending more for a full size iPad or looking at one of the 7" Android alternatives like the Nexus 7.

It is where it is and isn't moving. This is the same dealer who did a system (single speed heat pump with electric strip backup) for one of my neighbor's rent houses (which didn't previously have a central system). He had a bunch of trouble, ranging from the thermostat (not this S30 model) set for the wrong system type (they didn't get it right after a couple return trips so he researched and corrected it himself) to a too-small heat strip NOT what the contract stated (they did that purposely because the wiring was also too small and they had to re-wire when he pinned them down to install the correct heat strip capacity). I warned dad about all that but he went with this dealer anyway, and is happy with the results (thus far). Remains to be seen if the thermostat configuration is or isn't fouled-up ... and I'm not going to mess with it myself.

and since it mentions b/g/n it means it can use all of those technologies with n being the most current. So should you want or need a new wireless router any of those would work but you really want would be best with an N for latest technology and longest distance.

I have my modem and router right on the desk beside my desktop so I actually prefer to simply use cables to connect. Just use the wireless for my portable devices.

Thank you all so much. Clears it up for me. I want to do what ravencajun does, set up the wireless for use with my laptop. I have ordered an N router and hopefully will be able to set it up by myself. My new years day project....

Not hard if you just take your time and follow the directions step by step. If you plan to connect your desktop via ethernet, be sure you have a good Cat5 cable for this. And be sure to set up your security on the router so snoops don't use your wireless.
