Bought a brand new Gateway w/Windows Vista

Would like to clean up unnessary junk that has come on it...problem is I'm not sure which are needed or not...Guess I could of had BB do it for $170. but I'm a diy'er or try-it yourselfer. Fairly familiar with install/uninstal and some knowledge of how to get around, mostly in ME which Vista ISSS bigger than my base knowledge of that...

Here's a few that I'm not sure about:Big Fix-ATI-Spare Backup- and if anyone can suggest what programs/processes are needed for start-up...And if info on computer is needed-I think I can do that...

It should always be part of the original post as the Computer model and specs are normally germaine to supplying any sort of assistance. Also supplying the name of any security programs which you have installed/or are using ie Antivirus, firewall, spyware utilities etc

Not to argue over the unknown, but I can say from memory support for W98SE was dropped last year, six+ years after W-Whatever, forget its name, and six years after w2K. I don't expect them to drop XP any time soon. I just looked up information on the Dell C521 we purchased in December of 2006, it was under $600 before tax, so less than the subject Gateway of this thread. This Dell had the AMD 64 and 1 GByte of memory, but a much smaller HDD than the subject Gateway. It also has the 5 slot memory card input and a 17" LCD, so that says to me the Gateway price isn't particularly low. And speaking of our Dell and Vista, the Dell came with a "free" upgrade to Vista that had to be exercised by March 31. So, to be safe, and to pay only $10 S&H, I ordered our free upgrade to Vista Premium. I will not be in any hurry to implement it, and will have to see if it comes with a activation time requirement. The only statement this makes to me about upcoming Microsoft policy for XP is they want to get people on Vista so that it will be easier to provide support and to drop XP. Given what I paid for the Dell I can safely assume Dell paid the OEM for Vista and MS give them the XP Media to use until Vista (late as usual for MS) was available. Speaking of MS making money, a neighbor told me today (I have no proof, other than it sounds like the action of those who are paid way TOO much), the number 2 an MS, I forget his name, just had the largest private yacht in the world built for him, $400 million, don't remember the length but think it is several hundred feet, a crew of 65 (suppose some of them are off while others are on duty, not all on the ship at the same time), and an operating cost of 20 Million. So, MS clearly has to worry about making money off the Vista right away otherwise the top officers will not be able to buy a fleet of yachts next year.

Yaaayyyyy! DH is on board w/ the idea! I didn't even have to prod or run down my 'Why this is a practical, good and ultimately money saving' bucket list. Not that we're getting it anytime soon though but it did find it's way onto the 'Budget List' after we got home. So between me saving a few buckes a week, DH's alotted budget towards it down the road and me hopefully selling some of my rehabbed furniture finds this Spring, hopefully I will see a new sofa this Spring or Summer. When I bought this sofa I never thought of things like padding shifting over the years and allowing the frame edge to be felt if one's head whacked it. I still think it's a good sofa and am pleased that both my MIL & SIL have each been through a total of 4 sofa's in the same amount of time and I think that our's still looks way better than what there's look like now. If I had space to store it (sans mice in attic & smelly basement) I would keep it in a heartbeat for the day I had a larger room to put it in once I got it reupholstered. Looks like I'm going to be on a decorating - repurposing - using what I have run soon! DH felt confident about hanging my attic chandies and flip-flopping the LR and Office! Whoo hooo! Off to hang my curtains............

Any litigation would likely involve only the window manufacturer, and you'd have to show that the windows don't meet the published test data. Your builder would be liable only if you had a specification document that indicated the specific type or quality of construction you desired. "However, the one thing that stood out with the report in regards to my problem is that these windows have a decent air-infiltration value of 0.15 cfm/ft^2" Not knowing exactly what 0.15 infiltration "feels" like, it is about 15 times greater than the infiltration specifications we are accustomed to in regards to double or single hung windows. The 0.15 rate of air infiltration doesn't appear to be very good, but may also not be something that would be as noticeable as you have indicated. It appears that your new home purchase was made through buying an existing completed structure, as opposed to contracting a builder to construct the home based on your specifications. If this is true, it would not be a liability of your builder that you are unhappy with the windows, any more than they would be liable for your dissatisfaction of the exterior paint colors. This is assuming that you assessed the home and likely performed a home inspection prior to purchase. Again, the liable entity in your claim would be the window manufacturer if you can prove the windows don't meet the published air infiltration test data.

This is one of those things that really does take a lot of research and most GCs won't even bring it up (unfortunately for home owners who are then stuck with the energy bills). Since we wanted (and could do on this site) passive solar, we went a step further than most. For those who might be building a new home, here are just a few of the things we did for energy-efficiency. We have Low-E squared , which is more advanced than Low-E, having to do with the layers of silver, reflective capabilities, etc. We have a passive solar design and the Low-E squared is so important for hot summer climates. It may not be as important in cooler zones. There is a slight green tint on our windows which you won't have on Low-E. Energy cost savings in monitored field testing have shown a 30%-50% improvement over regular double pane windows. In addition to zoned heat (upstairs and downstairs), we have a dual-fuel system. The electric heat pump is used until the outside temperature drops below 38%, then the natural gas kicks in. We use programmable thermostats so that we have automatically set heat and a/c for "wake up" "leave" "return" "night" temps. We never go above 71 degrees on the heat or below 75 on the a/c and are very comfortable. We also have insulation that is Guardian, Green Guard Certified, SuperCube II fiberglass. Energy efficient and green certified. We are currently replacing most incandescents with CFLs. The kitchen and master bath are 100% CFL now. Our energy bills are half the cost of previous, much smaller homes that we have owned. We happen to have the cheapest electricity provider around here, too. That helps. Unless you want to buy anti-virus, anti-spy, and add on pay for fire wall, uninstall all of those. My memory is they lay in ambush and keep trying to get you to subscribe..bet there is also an offer for Microsoft Office. Uninstall them all. Of course then be sure to install something for each of the security concerns, including the Vista firewall and pay for or free-ware offers.

There is likely also some ISP, worldnet, AoL, etc. Uninstall them too, unless you want to use one of their offers.

That should be a good start.

Nortons needs to send a special uninstaller. that is what they say, at least. I didn't use it, and looked all over until I found as many signs of it as possible.

Please comnsider easing into this. By your description, your new system is extremely powerful and has an abundance of available rsources. Could it be that your haste and concern in paring all your targets is a byproduct of your previous system? I personally tended to act that way when I purchased the new one.

I haven't read any reports of great concern with the Vista firewall. It is bi-directional and apparently works adequately.

I left my Windows Defender enabled and update it regularly. Again from what I read it performs more than adequately. With a new quad core system resources and power are more than plentiful to run it in the background.

I took Norton off the first day.

Big Fix I guess is the same as what came with my computer,
Windows XP. It can be useful in delivering certain needed
updates and reminders of certain problems. I left it on my PC.

Their are different ways of getting rid of Norton. One way I have used is - Right click Norton - properties - Find Target -
Select All - Delete. If you use this be sure and get all of
them before you X out because you can't get back. I than go
to the Registry and do a search for Norton. For the Registry
Search leave Symantec alone. It's needed to help keep your
PC stable. I found out the hard way and I also was told latter that this was so by reading other Forums.

There is nothing wrong with norton, but there are some machines it does not run well on, it is also a very big program and runs several services, some people like a smaller program and choose another Anti virus, as long as you have no trouble with it leave it, also a lot of of folks elect to go with a free anti virus available on the web..

one of the best programs around for people who just bought new computers that want to get rid of all the extra stuff on them is the PC decrapifier. It will remove all kinds of stuff including those hard to remove antivirus programs. Here is an article about it on PC World.
